The apple tarte was so beyond perfection that I can't even find words to adequately describe the intensity of flavor. The second night we had the Menu 32E (47E with wine pairing). The crab tartare was lovely and the roast salmon, with slightly smoky flavor, was excellent. Both evenings started with an amuse bouche of warm asparagus soup with what was described as a coffee cream with nuts. It was delicious. The wine pairings were absolutely perfect as was the Cremant aperitif. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Impeccably nuanced food, rich and yet not heavy, warm atmosphere, excellent service.

Our first meal was when we learned that French cooking is the best in the world. On one memorable lunch, we shared a table with a couple from UK and a couple from Denmark and had a most enjoyable chat (in English) while eating fine French food. The history of There usually comes a time when we are visiting Europe (43 trips) when we get a yearning for something other than EU food, good as it is. When this urge hits, we have found these escapes: Chinese restaurants, a hamburger at the Holiday Inn Luxembourg, Blimpy's, and the Courte Paille chain in France. So, a couple times I have escaped EU cuisine for a day at the Chinese restaurant in Melk (from the Abbey, walk thru the town square, take the first right, and its on the corner of whatever street that is- and the road along the Danube). Decent Chinese food (clue: note the number of Orientals eating here ), decent service, and for EU, relatively low prices. Au Lion d'Or opened in 1759A.D. and is still going in the same building run by the same family today.

The hotel and restaurant is located by the river with beautiful willow trees. It's such a picturesque location. Now, on to the food. We did the seasonal tasting menu. Every dish was beautifully displayed. Not only that, there was balance in each dish. Each ingredient was there for a purpose to enhance the main ingredient. My favorite dish that blew me away was the langoustine on mashed beetroot and creamy potatoes. I would've thought the earthiness of the beet would drown out the delicate flavors of the langoustine. It definitely did not. The beet was actually slightly sweet, which complemented the langoustine. Definitely come for the food and stay for the views.

Both were good. These had been preceded by a mini pumpkin/pistachio soup appetizer. Yummy. Our mains were both pork cheeks braised in pinot noir. This was our first time eating cheeks. Wow, they were amazingly tender and good! Elizabeth, the server/owner, told us her husband (the chef) had aged the meat for at least a week and marinated in pinot. They were simply fantastic. Maybe I'm glad they had run out of the other main of jambon choucrutte! Dessert was an apple tarte that was sort of custardy. It was very, very good. We finished off with their homemade cherry liqueur steeped for 9-12 months with sour cherries.

My dying wish will be to have one more meal here…read more Every aspect of our meal was incredible. It was a slow Monday night and we had personal service from the owner Elizabeth. She is incredible! She suggested an aperitif for all of us, and chose wines for our appetizer and entree choices. She was so welcoming! But the food...I can't even put it into words. All of us were just blown away by how delicious everything was, and the portion sizes were perfect. Hands down, the best meal I've ever had. Can't wait to go back!
