Audreys Books is so easy to find.... On Jasper Ave, just look for the maroon awning and inside you will be transported to a world of books. Anything and everything you could want to read - magazines; non-fiction; new releases; local authors - they have it all. And, if you're not sure what you want to read they will help you find it. I've been to Audreys for 2 local author book releases... I love the fact they support local authors. Encouraging them to host book signings and book releases at the store and encouraging patrons to purchase local books. I've also called the store asking about what to buy for a niece, unsure about her age group and they made a suggestion, put it at the front so all I needed to do was run in and make the purchase. This is the quintessential independent bookstore that is a household name across the city. It is packed with books (of course) and friendly staff that are eager to help. Their downtown location is very convenient for transit-taking folk. For some reason, their selection of a particular popular author was not the greatest. The book I wanted could be ordered in, but would likely not arrive before Christmas. It is probably easier to special order books outside the Holiday Season. The staff member I spoke to offered many suggestions as to where I could pick it up. All things considered, my visit to the store was productive as I made several purchases. Exceptional service! I was recently in a bind, needing to purchase a bulk order for a big corporate meeting, and on a very short timeframe. I explained my predicament to Kelly, who was so sweet and helpful. She showed me all the titles in the subject area I was considering, and together we narrowed it down to one book. You can tell she really knows her stuff. She informed me the publishers were local and called them, confirming they would be able to deliver the bulk shipment on time. Not only were they able to get them in on time, they could get it in a day early! Payment wasn't a fuss, and she was able to give me a 10% discount because of the bulk order. The staff I spoke with on the phone when calling in the day after were also very pleasant and courteous. Audreys doesn't feel like a bookstore that is solely constructed around marketing. It feels like a bookstore that is constructed around a genuine passion for books. Unlike Chapters, Audreys has books on display that aren't just money-making best sellers, but books that are eternally interesting or that are by talented Canadian writers that would otherwise be overlooked. It's easy to browse this store and not get bored. There are several tables with lots of interesting finds, like Andy Warhol Portraits. I also like that Audreys has its books catogorized into more specific sections than Chapters. Some that caught my eye were Globalization and Lesbian Literature. I fell in love with the Feminisms section--there were so many books I wanted to buy. Downstairs, there's lots of great finds in the discounted Lemon section, and there's an amazing children's section as well. Readings and presentations are also held down here. I've attended a few readings, and it's a nice intimate atmosphere. I think that Audreys really does its best to compete with such scary competitors. And sometimes it's just worth spending a little more to support such a great local store. read more

They have book readings and signings here but I have never attended until recently. We walked in and I saw a table set up for the author with his books and there was a staff person at the counter and she asked if we were there for the book signing and we said yes and she directed us to downstairs. We went downstairs to find there was a few rows of chairs set up but not many people yet the event started at 2 o'clock and it was just shortly before 2. The author was standing there and he was really kind to take time to chat with us before the event started. Although it would have been nice to see a larger crowd I really appreciated the intimacy of getting to speak one-on-one with the author. The event started about 10 minutes after scheduled and the bookstore staff introduced the author. The author provided some readings of his book and then sign them downstairs before moving upstairs. Although I did not browse all of the children's section downstairs I did see a few interesting books and gift items that I would think would be very cool for a child to receive. The layout was ok so people could still come downstairs and not disturb the reading. I found the staff to be friendly and if I was looking for a gift for a child or a book for myself, I would stop by! read more

Audrey's Books is on Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton. I make it a point to stop at this very nice and comfortable independent bookstore when I'm in town. I usually come here after going to the nearby Alberta Crafts Council gallery and sometimes just before going to Earl's on Jasper Avenue for lunch or dinner. Beth Shalom is also a pleasant walk down the street. Audrey's has a great selection of hard- and soft-cover books and a nice Children's section and book-ordering service downstairs. Audrey's Books is perhaps my favourite local new bookseller in Edmonton. They have a great selection of books and are walking distance from many other destinations downtown and from where I live they are easily accessible. The store is close to LRT, buses, and has a decent online storefront as well. I really like their children's book and toy section downstairs and the recommended books from their staff members are pretty great too! That said there are some books that are difficult to find or which they don't get in stock acceptably quickly after release which saddens me because I really would like to shop local rather than online on some occasions. I probably only shop here once or twice a year mostly because it is super tempting to buy books when I come in here and I would rather not multiply my collection more quickly than I read them. That said, they do run great author/poet events and I highly recommend attending some of these! read more

The difference between an good independent bookstore like Audreys and the bookmart which is Chapters is that you can get books that are about something here. Listen, if your idea of high literature is Harry Potter or you spend time worrying about Team Jacob, then you're admittedly better off buying at Chapters. They'll have thousands of copies and probably some event involved. However, if you love books, books about ideas, emotions, humanity and sheer knowledge? Then, an independent like Audrey's is the place to go. It really is a treat to buy a book from people who read, and to discover some "wouldn't even be stocked at Chapters" treasure and it being in stock at Audrey's. There is a lot of pressure on independents with Chapters and eBooks; these people are in this business because they love it. There are only three really great independents left in the city and maybe a half dozen of the really great used bookstores. Seek them out and find something special. read more

Not only is the store located in the heart of Jasper Avenue, it's selection is incomparable and the moment you step in those doors -- "Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore." This big-city book store has a small-town feel and plenty of good food surrounding it to boot. Accessing various book genres is easy and the staff have endless suggestions with no time limit on assistance. Two years back, I found one of only a select complete works of George Orwell hard-copies in this store -- it's a very difficult book to find. Not only do they sell diverse books, anyone can stroll on down there and pick up a copy of the New York Times Newspaper. Looking for an afternoon to fill? Head down to Audrey's, pick out a few good reads and take yourself out for near-by lunch. The Druid is located on 116st and Jasper, and sushi restaurants like Mikado are around the corner. Take my word for it -- the store is awesome and for book worms, an afternoon to yourself with new books in tow on Jasper Avenue is always a good time. Two thumbs up. read more

I read a lot, and likely should hit the library instead of buying so often....but there is nothing like a random walk through a bookstore to see what you might find and coming home with an armful. Chapters is ok, but Audrey's is my preference. I love their columns of featured and recommended books and always pick up a couple from there. If I go on a search, they will always either have it or order it for me. When our dollar is high, they give US pricing. Staff are helpful and unobtrusive. There are frequent readings from local authors, if you want to bask in the presence of Edmonton's literati. No in-house coffee shop or multiple copies of the latest vampire novel, just the best atmosphere to indulge your inner escapist. read more

The selection at this downtown bookshop isn't as great as the obvious, Chapters - I read a lot of classics and Audreys is a little thin in that area - but shopping at independent shops is infinitely preferable to the chains. So I enjoy coming to Audreys for a browse and usually end up picking up something unknown from their travel lit section in the basement. It's a good-looking shop, with large window displays and dark wooden shelves. I made a serious point to come here in the summertime to take advantage of the great deal they had on - American-printed books selling at the American list prices. Their concern for their customers overshadowing their concern for exploiting the economy is the type of thing that will keep me coming back. read more

I love Audreys Books. Why go to Chapters when there's Audreys!? The store is a very spacious two-floored store (basement being the second) with a huge selection of books. It's, by no means, small or limited. They have discounts on all Globe & Mail bestsellers, which is kinda cool and have a nice selection of cute gifts etc. that usually adorn a part of every bookstore. The best part of the bookstore is the Children's section which is really like a playroom with all sorts of kiddy things, like colorful blocks to sit on, interesting stuff toys etc. A great place for parents to come with their kids to find the perfect book! Audrey's is one of Edmonton's premier bookstores. It carries a huge selection of hardcovers and paperbacks, from current best-sellers to classic titles. Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, children's, women's studies, and a large selection of gay and lesbian literature adorn the shelves. There are also sections for politics, religion, Canadiana, and other topics. Audrey's does not sell magazines, including literary periodicals, but the selection of books more than makes up for that. I love love love the IDEA of Audrey's... however the few times I've been here I almost always leave with out buying anything. I just find their selection kinda... meh. The last time I was here -admittedly right after Christmas- the selection was honestly pathetic. That said, the staff seem friendly and the store is very clean. Their prices I think compete favorably with the likes of the box stores. I'm not sure what their strong categories are but sports and current science don't seem to be it. read more

Forget Chapters -- This is where book lovers work! While Chapters employees can tell you where books are because they type them into their computers, Audrey's employees can tell you where they are, because they read it, loved it, and bought it from their store. Nice little independent bookshop downtown. They have a great children's section downstairs and sometimes host author launch events down there also. Upstairs they have a good selection of local authors as well as the normal selection you'd expect from a book shop. One thing that did strike me is a rather odd science fiction and fantasy section though. They have two separate signs (science fiction, and fantasy) and since they are after all two rather different things, I assumed that like many stores they had separated out the science fiction from the fantasy. No, however; they're all mixed in together, the shelf labels just make it look as if they're different. Based on the slightly odd selection of books within this section (one of my favourites, as you've probably guessed) I don't think anyone working in this store - or at least nobody who controls inventory - actually reads science fiction or fantasy. There was an odd lack of currently topical authors I would have expected, and I noticed several cases where there was only one of a series available - and not necessarily the first book either. For example, in the month when "A Wrinkle In Time" is about to be released in the theatre, I would have expected at least one copy of the book, if not an end cap display with other recent blockbuster originals? But not a sign of this OR other recent/upcoming movie originals in sight. Or, of all the David Brin books to stock, they have "Sundiver", one of his oldest books and first in a trilogy of which there was no sign of the other two, yet they didn't have either of the books he's published in the last couple of years. Stuff like that jumped out at me as a pretty clear sign nobody in the store loves this genre. Still, it's a nice store, support local book shops, and definitely looked to be a good collection of younger reader books and local authors, so check it out! read more

Long live the small independent book store. I love shopping at Audrey's. You're surrounded by people who have a passion for reading and learning. The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable here, and even though it's smaller than a Chapters or Indigo, they have a pretty wide selection to choose from. If I'm out for a stroll on Jasper Ave., it's fun for me to pop into Audrey's and check out the latest titles. I always hit the yoga and spirituality sections, and I've found lots of great offerings here. When Edmonton came out with it's cenntennial book, I bought it from Audrey's, which has been part of our neighbourhood for many years. When recently I saw The Doors movies and wanted to read what Jim Morrison was reading as a teenager, I called Audrey's up to see if they had Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception and the kind man on the other end of the phone looked it up and put a copy on hold for me. I adore the more personal touch of these smaller stores. Then I could just walk downtown a few blocks and pick it up. read more

Most interesting biography/autobiography section in the city!

I'm a card-carrying bibliophile, and after reading all the great reviews, I decided to pop in for a visit. Unfortunately, Audreys was rather disappointing. When I think of great independent bookstores, I remember the hours I spent perusing the shelves of The Strand in NYC, O'gara & Wilson and Powell's in Chicago, and Bluestem Books in Lincoln, NE. (All of which I cannot recommend too highly.) Audreys is just a much smaller version of Indigo and Barnes and Noble---much like Coles with nicer shelves and really nowhere to sit. It carries most of the expected titles but not much else. The science and mathematics sections, in particular, were quite underwhelming, offering almost nothing off the beaten path. (Note: The search option on the website returns titles that can be ordered, not on-the-shelf stock.) There's a pretty decent children's section (downstairs), but I expect a lot more from an "independent" bookstore, especially one as esteemed as Audreys. If you want a dusty copy of "Infinite Jest" or "Animal Farm" or "A Brief History of Time," Audreys is your place. If you want to discover something novel and exciting, an independent bookstore that offers an opportunity to expand your intellectual horizons, I'd urge you to look elsewhere. read more
