Having recently completed a renovation with Augustus Construction in North Truro, our review of our experience with this company is an overwhelmingly positive one. We began with a derelict property that needed a lot of TLC and through every step, the owner John Hopkins guided us expertly through the process. His resourcefulness, professionalism and vast knowledge of local building codes allowed us to rehabilitate our space on time and under budget. When unanticipated problems came up both large and small, John was always even keeled and had a creative solution for us to implement. The outcome of our work together is a beautiful space that is much more structurally sound and energy efficient. For any future building project we will definitely be using Augustus Construction. read more

I recently had a kitchen fully renovated and decided to go with Augustus Construction after reading a few reviews and meeting with the owner, Brian Hopkins. I used a kitchen designer from another state who I've worked with before, and there were several details that hadn't been worked out prior to Augustus Construction starting the project. Covid-19 complicated the work even further with delays both for the cabinets and the appliances. During the time most of the work was being done, I was out-of-state but could see from the outdoor security cameras that workers were on-site first completing the demo, and then preparing the space for the cabinets & appliances. Brian stayed in contact with me when any questions or issues came up, but for the most part he and his team handled everything on-site. I returned to the Cape in late July for the first time since the project began and was very happy to not only see most of the construction was complete, but more importantly, that every issue that I had mentioned during the planning stage and afterwards had been addressed in a way that exceeded my expectations. When I've worked with other contractors in the past, usually things get done the 'easy' way for the contractor rather than what the client wants, especially if the client isn't on-site overseeing the work. Brian & his team paid attention to the finishing details, and from my experience, that hasn't been a common quality of other contractors I've worked with. But best of all, everything was done as perfectly as possible, and I didn't have to beg, plead, or harass anyone to return to finish the job. I'm sorry to hear about the experience of the first reviewer. However, there are always two sides to every story. Personally I can only say really lovely and positive things about John Hopkins and Augustus Construction. Just take a look at the new Salty Market (once Dutra's) in North Truro. John is a very kind, generous and hardworking professional, who cares about people and the planet we inhabit. John gave his time generously to inspect and give his professional opinion on a home I was interested in purchasing. As a first time home buyer he answered alot of questions I had about the home buying process, which was above and beyond the duties of a custom home builder. With John's help I successfully purchased my first home in Truro and look forward to working with him on future renovations. read more

This company was a disaster. We had them put in new windows a couple of years ago. From giving them a deposit check in October to them finally finishing the following June after constant omplaints about them not doing things when they said they would it was one of the worst contracting experiences I've been through. It's now January and I have a blanket over one of the windowtey put in to keep the draft out. Kind of defeated the point of getting new energy efficient windows. Their follow through and the quality of their work are both horrible. read more

Exteriors (especially windows) of two rooms of my 19th Century farmhouse required repair/replacement. Augustus Construction reviewed the problem, designed/planned the repair/replacement, and performed the work with excellent results. Their special capabilities included: deep understanding of, and experience with, local homes and weathering; a positive, upbeat, understanding attitude; excellent technical skills and know-how; smooth work team interactions; and strict adherence to the agreed-on budget and work schedule. My work (relatively low-cost repair/replacement) had originally been scheduled for a winter date - one that instead brought unusual blizzard-like conditions. Our experience of a renovation of kitchen and bath with this company was an overwhelmingly negative one. A 5 to 6 week job ended up taking 9 months. The owner was rude to our neighbours, both upstairs and downstairs; he was dishonest about the painting contractor he used (not a professional painter at all; terrible job); he caused delay after delay. The prices are exorbitant, and the contract we signed, which contained many "allowances" for items to be ordered (appliances, etc.), were never justified by showing bills to prove cost. He and his crew damaged our screen doors, broke a window, left us with electric sockets that no longer worked, and his response to fixing these things has been completely insufficient. We would never hire him again. read more
