The instructors are great and come from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. They respect the students and instill confidence in your ability as a student to learn the style and as a student you have confidence in their ability to teach. Of the three styles I have taken Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) has proven to be the most fun and is at the same time challenging enough so that you can't get bored. The classes are usually a mix of starting with your forms (there are 2 for students) or punching exercises as a warm up and then moving into practicing what is required for your student grade by either working with students of the same grade or higher ranked students. You also get to practice the other stuff you have previously learned by working with the newer students and nearly everything has an application in the real world of defense. Do we not spar (unlike other styles, such as Tae Kwon Do), Ving Tsun is not a "sports" martial art, it is for self-defense, you defend yourself and stop the other person before they can hurt you (in the real world, not in class) so there is no gentle, safe way to spar (Google Wing Chun if you have doubts). There are also few forms; actually there are 3 empty hand forms, 1 wooden dummy form, and 2 weapon forms, and students only learn the first two forms until the end of the student grades. Not that there isn't plenty of stuff, do such as Chi Sao and Lat Sao, both of which require a partner and help built technique and reactions, while "teaching" your muscles how to react (check out Wikipedia for more information).

You will build upon your reflexes and ability to deflect and deliver strikes with each passing class, and if you work hard, you will feel it. I've joined as a student of Sifu Jeff Webb, the head of the National Ving Tsung Organization, to learn as much as I can during the time I have remaining in Texas, before transferring to a student of his in the North who is now also a Sifu (instructor or master, I'm not quite sure really which term is most appropriate). Thus far I have learned a great deal, and observed the high level of skill possessed by each of his students ranked from low and high, with the higher ranked students also working as assistant instructors to provide valuable input and more skilled training partners to guide your development. I attend classes in both the North and South locations to experience a broader range of instructors and training partners to build upon my understanding more comprehensively. Classes consist of an initial period of taxing and difficult form practice that appears hella easy when done well, followed by exercises with a partner that exhibit and employ the techniques learned in the forms, generally taking up much of the class. Very straightforward, but not at all simple, with only heavy effort bringing about real improvement. Ving Tsung/Wing Chun, made famous by Bruce Lee and Ip Man, is a center-line striking style created by a woman for close-quarters combat that requires one to be relaxed excepting the points of impact, allowing strength to be overcome by angling and reaction time, making strength all the more powerful once the style is understood, something my boxing and other training is making difficult as I'm relatively rigid and tense, so this style is helping me to learn fluidity and to better employ my power at appropriate times rather than wasting energy when it isn't essential. Yoga oddly enough I approached as a strength and stamina-building exercise, so it has done little to improve my flexibility, just power and reaction time, as I am not zen enough apparently. The wing chun perspective I will transfer into my legal studies and eventual practice, as it is an expansive philosophy useful elsewhere in life that helps you not waste energy, and have the push-through when it counts. One of the key precepts of the system constructed by Sifu Webb is something to the effect of "If the way is open, move forward", something entirely in tone with the Norse ideology of the Vikings, and I appreciate this. The studio is absolutely worth checking out if you are serious about your training, and definitely is not a lunchtime cardio or high-flying acrobatic activity, it is a place to go to learn a fighting style with hard-working and committed fellow students and teachers that follows a logical progression and isn't going to waste your time.

I post ONE 1 star review and all of a sudden they get all these people to post 5 star and rave about it to offset my 1 star rating, some of whom actually work there, to keep their overall raiting good and try to push my review further down so it's not seen. I tried to trust this program and its participants, however I can't help but feel like this is an MLM cult. After spending three full days at the program (Friday was 10am to 10pm, Saturday was 9am to 10pm and Sunday was 8am to 5pm), I can honestly say that I don't trust any of it. Something seems off and it makes me very uneasy. None of the guides/program members are licensed, and it showed during my weekend there. Knowing I had trauma and abuse from a male figure in my life, they had 5 grown men pin me to the ground on my back and held my arms down between my elbow and shoulders while one of the leaders held a towel, which represented my life, and they pretended to be someone else that caused me trauma, and I had to pull the towel (my life) back from the person they were pretending to be while they said things like "I own you" "you will never be free of me" "I control you" and more until they could pull the emotion out of me and purge it out. None of it worked and I had to ask them to stop. While I got a small amount of clarity while I was there, it felt like nothing more than a church retreat from people that aren't licensed and don't have the proper training to do anything remotely close to this. You aren't allowed to cross your legs, put your hands in your pockets or cross your arms. They repeatedly talk about signing up/paying for the next class and make you think that you will need the next course to get the clarity you're needing. This is a textbook multi-level marketing scheme. They also ask you to not share your experience with anyone because they say everyone's experience is different, and after witnessing and experiencing what I did, I now know why. They want people to spend the money thinking it'll be beneficial for them. They expect me to work through 19 years of trauma in 9 days spread across 3 separate months. I won't be back, and I'll unfortunately tell anyone that is thinking about going to please consider therapy or seeking guidance from someone who has the adequate training and resources. I had high hopes for this place, and they sadly lost my trust. Please beware if you choose to go as you will witness and experience things that might negatively affect you/haunt you. This entire experience was nothing more than a complete fever dream and I have trauma because of how they treated me through my trauma and I truly wish I could forget every bit of it. DO NOT SIGN UP OR GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. Edit: not even an hour after I posted this review the company removed me from the group support chat with the classmates that I went with. Petty much? The fact that this company tries to silence its paying participants that have a negative review and share their experience should tell you everything you need to know. They also said that I "should have done more research before I came". YOU CANT DO MORE RESEARCH. It's intentionally set up so you can't figure out what happens so by the time you're there and they try their "ways" of purging the program out they've already got your money and if you walk out they win.

Two weeks ago, I was out running errands and saw the sign for Tactical Arts Academy. I also saw that it was almost exactly halfway between my office and home. So, I went to their website to see what they could do for me -- someone who's never been able to commit to exercise and who hasn't ever been able to find a fitness program they could tolerate enough. Leslie replied to my web inquiry quickly and we met the next day to discuss my situation. I told him my big fear was that I am massively out of shape. He explained that's why I was there. We discussed CrossFit and how the workouts can be scaled to meet someone's level. I decided to give it a try. My first three sessions have been one-on-one to learn how to do CrossFit safely. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sore. Ibuprofen can fix that. But after each session, I come away feeling that I've accomplished something. Here's what I can tell you though. Leslie and Sergio, the two instructors, are beyond supportive. I feel encouraged and like I'm making headway. They're patient with newbies like me. And there's virtually no pressure. You're encouraged and pushed, but it's not boot camp. There's no drill instructor yelling at you. It's more like being mentored. And it's pushing me into fitness. There's no pressure to buy stuff. There's no long term contracts either. And heck, the gym is climate controlled and out of the elements so weather isn't an excuse. They offer CrossFit classes both at lunch and after work. Martial arts and self defense are in the evening if that's something you want to pursue as well. For once, I honestly feel I can keep up a commitment to being fit. If that keeps up, I'm going to have to ask Yelp for a one time exception to allow for a six star review.

Bottom line up front: I've made amazing improvements in skill and strength and have lost around 18 lbs so far. TAA didn't do all of that, but Leslie and Sergio make this place a fun and engaging environment where you can achieve realistic goals. It's a great space with an open floor plan. The format of the work outs take off a lot of the pressure of trying to squeeze a bunch of work into an hour. Everyone who works out there is just like you: just trying to get back in shape - not some yelling raging meat head. I've watched other trainers at the gym -- many tend to chit chat, many tend to take it easy. Sam does not.
