I should preface this review by admitting that I attended exactly two classes at Martial Way through UT's Informal Classes last year. I've trained in boxing and kickboxing for a few years at places in Austin and San Antonio, though, so I think I experienced enough there to form an opinion about this place. The good part is that the workout had me sweating and gasping for air within minutes. Instructors were all energetic and helpful, and had the class moving almost non-stop. The drills were simple enough for a basic class, and they would correct but not obsess over your technique. Both teachers and current students went out of their ways to be nice to us Informal Class outsiders and offered tons of encouragement. Maybe too much encouragement... In my opinion, the level of encouragement was one step above creepy and approaching that of cult-like encouragement. Everyone in the class was rah-rahing everything that everybody did, and to me it just went overboard. "Yeah, Mike! Yeah!!!!! Woooooo!!!" or "Get it Amber---go!!!! Yeahhhh!!!!" or "Come on everyone, make some noise!! Ah, that's terrible--MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!" Ugh. To be fair to Martial Way, I am an introverted person as opposed to a rah-rah, attaboy, outgoing kind of guy. I just prefer to go somewhere, get my punch-and-kick on, and drip sweat in peace without being accosted over the lack of noise I am producing. I don't want to have to bow to walls* or tell Ashley that she murdered that roundhouse kick. So this place was not for me. If you are extroverted and friendly and loooove oodles of positive reinforcement, then Martial Way might be a great place for you. Also: if you are the type of person who lurks a gym before going there, never give Martial Way your e-mail or phone #. They WILL go overboard with the e-mails, call you repeatedly, and they will find you on Facebook as well. *If you forget to bow to the wall upon entering, you get punished with pushups or some other physical task. Disappointing business practices..after getting military orders for another city they continued to charge me and would not respond to my emails. I think that is a very spineless way to run a business. The beginner classes are way basic and a waste of a person's time who has prior experience. the requirement to attend beginner first is a turn off to any person with a lot of training and an insult. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone with sense. I would go somewhere else to get a real workout without paying extra for classes when you are already paying a high amount monthly. I've been taking kickboxing classes for the last two years taught by professional fighters and competitors. I decided to give this place a try but it wasn't my cup of tea. I'll start with the good points...everyone that worked there was really welcoming and helpful. The instructors seemed to know about technique. I think the good end about there. The place was hot and smelly, I don't think they had air conditioning in the main classroom upstairs. Not that gyms should smell like flowers but this one smelled like rank body odor. It wasn't the kind of smell I wanted to be taking deep breaths of while working out. None of the students I saw looked like they were reaping the benefits from the school's workouts. In addition, the trainers who trained me did not look fit. From what they told me they were students themselves that achieved this 'black belt ranking' which seemed to me was only a ranking system their school used. The changing room they had was a locked bathroom outside you had to enter with a key. The training rooms for class were small, messy and unappealing. The class structure that the trainers described to me was not what I was hoping for. They don't use hanging bags, they focus mainly on Thai pads and during class you partner up with another student and they hold the pads for you. This is no bueno. If anyone should be holding the pads, it should be a trainer. Not a newbie to the class. Someone is going to wind up getting kicked in the face. Also, you only work on one combo per class. WHAT?! To me that is boring and repetitive. I would get bored doing 'jab, cross, hook', for a whole hour. So....the search continues for another QUALITY kickboxing class! read more

I had to comment here, because I saw Kimberly's negative review (she gave my recently opened North Austin fitness studio one star, lol - guess she's on a roll). Anyway, I've been doing martial arts for 25 years and have trained kickboxing with professionals in gyms where pros trained. And, I can honestly say that Larry's classes are great. I trained there for several months after selling my last studio, and had a great workout, every single time. As for focusing on pad workouts, Kimberly should know that pad drills are a staple of most real boxing and kickboxing gyms. Just because someone walks into a facility and doesn't see what they expect, it doesn't mean that gym is wrong for everyone. Try Martial Way and see for yourself if it's for you - I'd bet most people will be pleasantly surprised. read more

Uh, no thanks. Took kickboxing classes at Martial Way. My first mistake was to take it during the summer-- no air conditioning in an enclosed class full of grown adults. In Texas heat? Not the best. It felt gross to take deep breaths of what smelled like years of accumulated sweat. The classes themselves were decent-- I did feel like I worked out and learned a little bit about kickboxing. The people who run it, in my opinion, are irresponsible. Their daughter, who at the time couldn't have been more than 6 years old, rode her tricycle IN THE MIDDLE of class, weaving in between students who were kicking and thrashing. I saw this little girl smack one of the students on the behind. I also saw her at one point run around the facility with nothing but underwear on. This made a huge negative impression on me because the situation made me feel uneasy. You never know what kind of weirdos the little girl might encounter or what harmful situation she might find herself in. Not only that, but on my last day, when I was asked to come to the office so that they could convince me to join permanently, the little girl was completely unsupervised. She grabbed my purse, undid all the zippers, and managed to find an Ibuprofen bottle I had with me. This happened in front of her mother who did not stop her, so it was up to me to say something to get her to stop. I shouldn't have to discipline other people's children. No boundaries whatsoever-- completely unprofessional. I agree with previous reviewers who mentioned the odd and cultish vibe there as well. I completed the beginner course, but I knew that I'd never come back again. Martial Way will also call and email you non-stop once you leave. Everything about this place is unappealing. read more

Martial Way is one of the premiere martial art academy's in Austin, Tx. The head instructor is a local and has been teaching JKD and other "martial arts" in Austin since well before the MMA - "know it all" craze started. Now after reading the reviews it seems that anyone that has taken a "kickboxing" class at the YMCA or UT thinks they can formulate an opinion. Rest assured, this school is an excellent place to learn martial arts.. not just the flash in the pan MMA. Take some time, meet the head instructor Larry St. Clair & see someone who truly cares about his school & his students. He is an instructor under Sifu Ron Balicki (www.ronbalicki.com) as well as Dan Inosanto. So you know he's been around. Guro Larry is an amazingly rare breed, fun to talk to, always motivating, willing to jump right into anything that's going on to show you a little more. He's been doing this for a very long time and the skill shows. I've been attending classes for about a year and half and I have been having a blast with every lesson. Additionally, I have training twice weekly with private lessons which have helped me reach a much better understanding of everything from fighting, fitness, health, and the history of the academy and the styles they teach. If you're looking for a place to learn a variety of martial arts and good bit of history, this is the place for you. I am currently taking my first class with martial way and I love it! Having heard stories of bruised ribs and black eyes before getting started with Martial Way, I'll admit to being nervous before classes started. As it turns out, I didn't have anything to be scared of. The workouts are INTENSE. I have never sweat so much in my life. And after I leave classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, I'm typically flooded with sweat and endorphins and go home grinning and giggling like a lunatic. It's a fantastic feeling. AND as a bonus, I am (and my boyfriend is) now happier knowing I can cause a little damage if I need to, too. There's something deeply, deeply gratifying about that. The staff is VERY helpful and friendly. They're even great about working around an injury if you happen to be a bit of a klutz, like yours truly. I highly recommend Martial Way! read more

I was looking for a great workout while I was in Austin for 2 months and was referred to Martial Way for the introductory kickboxing classes. All I can say is...AMAZING! The person that referred me expressed my interests in classes to the instructors and she contacted me to invite me to a class. We had a quick 30 minute lesson that gave the basics that would allow you to understand what's expected during the introduction class. Everyone was so nice and welcoming and it truly is a family atmosphere where you feel a part of all that is going on. This was one of the most high intensity, total body workouts and I would say I am a pretty fit person that has tried A LOT of different work out classes. You don't stop moving from the minute class starts to the minute class ends. It's a great mix of self-defense, martial arts, and conditioning. I was so sad to only have 2 months to spend. I haven't had any other workout quite as awesome as this one. The instructors are very knowledgeable and they focus on teaching as a component of the curriculum training. Its a motivating workout for people of all levels. Shannon was truly awesome and supplied so much energy to the class which was a great part of the workout. I can't say enough awesome things!! The Yelp reviews for Martial Way Legacy are a few years old, so I want to chime in with a fresh review. Context: I have been attending the beginner Adult Kickboxing/MMA classes since February 2019 and have been attending regularly for six months. The school itself is a small studio, which lends to smaller class sizes, so there is plenty of opportunity for direct feedback from Guro Larry as you work out with other students. Classes are primarily led by Guro Larry, with students from the Advanced Kickboxing/MMA classes jumping in to demo (teaching others is a requirement of the school's belt rank system) or even lead a class. Class structure is based on a 5 week progression: each class builds on learning a fight combination that incorporates moves from Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do, MMA, Filipino Martial Arts, and Muay Thai fighting styles. At the end of the 5 weeks, students have a "graduation" class where they demonstrate the complete combination. Then it starts all over again. Coming for a full 5 weeks, learning a full sequence, and going through a graduation class is a rewarding experience. If you come for only 1 or 2 classes, jumping in to the middle of a progression may not be as engaging. Class equipment used are standing bags, Thai pads, TRX straps, and kettle bell weights. For a fee, you can purchase boxing gloves and Thai pads if you do not want to borrow them (I use boxing wraps). An older review noted that students will partner up holding Thai pads for each other - this is true, and can be a challenging experience for someone new to kickboxing/MMA. But how else are you going to learn how to defend yourself if you only ever work on a bag and don't have the opportunity to hold pads? When I hold Thai pads for others, if I feel like a sparring partner is going too heavy or too fast, I speak up, and they adjust their technique so we can both get the workout we want. Because, you know, we're adults that can use our words to establish boundaries with other adults. However, if the possibility of getting punched or kicked (even accidentally) is not something you are willing to entertain while you train for kickboxing/MMA, then this kind of class structure is not for you. Everyone is welcoming and friendly. This is not the kind of school where you come in with your headphones on to just get your workout over with and then leave. Martial Way Legacy offers (successfully, I think) a sense of camaraderie and community, and the opportunity to learn from everyone around you as you work on improving your strength and technique. The workout is very intense, with the hour being switched up from bag work, to paired-up sparring, and strength training intervals. I noticed improvements in my strength and stamina after just a few classes; you get what you put in to the work out. Guro Larry encourages students to cheer each other on, so expect to hoot and holler as you work out! At the end of each class, you have chance to share your thoughts/feedback while everyone does their cool down stretches. The positive community and welcoming space have been a huge motivating factor for me continuing with Martial Way Legacy. Additionally, the school offers fun family-friendly events outside of the class curriculum; recently they hosted a park clean-up and BBQ, a summer pool party, and the Kids (Tigers) class had a pizza party. You don't have to participate in these extras to get the benefit of the workout being offered, but these extras are really great for parents who may want to enroll their kids in a kickboxing/MMA program. In terms of cost, monthly membership for the beginner Adult kickboxing/MMA is on par with costs I have seen with other studios in the Austin area. The school regularly offers discounted introductory deals that are very affordable, and is a great way to try out a few classes to see if this school is the right one for you. Additionally, they host a free Saturday morning class most Saturday mornings for anyone to come and attend, so there are plenty of opportunities to check out this school. Over all, I am very pleased with my experience as a student with Martial Way. Guro Larry is a thoughtful, experienced, and enthusiastic teacher, and I am happy to continue learning kickboxing/MMA in his school. read more

They offer some great classes to get fit, and you do it with a group of high-energy inspirational people who are the fittest you're every likely to grapple with. They offer food and nutrition advice and there's always something new to learn or join in. I keep going back. I'm not best placed to comment on their martial art style per se - they have taught me kickboxing, grappling and JKD - I've studied Chinese boxing, Judo, Aikido and Goyararu in the past and this seems legit. read more

Don't be fooled by this "kickboxing" academy. Their business practices are super shady. We signed up for a year for a particular price only to find out what we were signing up for wasn't even offered after a couple of weeks being there. They also charge people based on what they can pay so if you have nice things or drive a nice car, you better take off the jewlery and take a cab so you are not price gouged upon entering the building. Their belt programs are not legitimate nor are their "seminars". Other than the owner, they have one certified instructor. They use their students to teach classes! If you are looking for a legitimate gym and a belt program that will be competitive in the mixed martial arts arena...DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. Bad business and bad instruction all around. read more

Love the energy - once you get over the initial shock of a school that actually promotes everyone contributing - it can be quite addicting. Why nobody can tell me a price? I have been wanting to join a kickboxing class up north austin, and started browsing. Some other reviewers had already mentioned the not so clear price practices from this place Agree. After several phone calls and emails, I still cannot have a price set for the beginner kickboxing class. I have to sit with a trainer or so and he will prepare me a package...I do not want a package! I just want to go to 1 class a day! Is it that hard to tell me it costs 30, 50 or so per month? I have been going to Martial Way for 4 years and I absolutely love it! I began at their location off of Payton Gin and Ohlen Rd, while it was hot, there were fans and I believe that increased by ability to handle tough/uncomfortable situations. At their current location, we have semi-private which really gets all of us out of our comfort zone to meet new people and work with different partners. The best part is, we all get to work with Guro Larry! He teaches every class and is able to help us more one on one. It's pretty amazing. I don't know of any other gym that promotes team work as much as this gym does. We are pretty much one big family! read more

The day I walked in the office at Martial Way, I would've never expected the growth I have gone through to happen in less than the 2 years I've been there. Apparently, some people's opinions are on the opposite end of that spectrum which is fine but from what I've experienced it's their loss. The beginner's kickboxing class is a fast-paced, virtually non-stop hour that will take you to your limits every day and push them every class you make. Yes, students will often take the reins and lead that class but only the ones that have shown the qualities that they can safely and efficiently run the curriculum are asked for this task. Even if it is just the "beginner's" class, Larry, Jamie, Shannon or one of the other veteran students will take the time to correct your technique as needed for the sake of preventing injuries and slowly but surely transform you into an ass kicking machine. The belt class is something that I have never heard happen in any martial arts school in the area. This class is taught only by the experienced students on the verge of their black belts and above including the owner and head instructor Larry. It is a true Mixed Martial Arts curriculum with techniques that stem from various arts like muay thai, vale tudo, jeet kune do, and filipino martial arts just to name a few. As distinct as these disciplines are, they are taught in a way where they just flow fluently and naturally as well as being particularly fierce techniques that will definitely come in handy in real street situations. As for the negative reviews, well its safe to say that this place is not for everyone. The atmosphere is dynamic and fun and the people are tough but encouraging. The techniques are top-notch, the conditioning will cultivate a stronger you, and the energy of the people and the place certainly have the potential to turn a quiet and reserved person like the former me into someone that wants to actively get more out of life to give even more back. It's a shame that some people don't see beyond the hot air and rah-rah attitude to experience that Martial Way is wayyy more than that. read more

I know this is a long review, just trying to be thorough and answer any possible questions. I've been attending Martial Way Academy for four months now. I've have taken many different styles of martial arts before, but nothing for more than a couple of years. I finally got myself settled in Austin and set out to find a school that would work for me. Martial Way is NOT the academy for everyone, it can't be. Martial way won't fast-track you to a black belt, and it won't make you the next Brock Lesnar. Those aren't the goals of the academy. Martial Way wants to help people get themselves into great shape, build a strong community amongst its students, and utilize a holistic approach to martial arts study Some of what was written in previous reviews is true. The academy does have a very rah-rah attitude about it, and it asks that students cheer each other on. That doesn't mean that you have to be everyone's best friend; but if you have a problem giving support to someone trying to better themselves, or you simply want to sweat in peace, then sign up for a gym, run on a treadmill and hit a heavy bag for your workout. Furthermore, you are expected to complete twenty beginner's kickboxing classes before you can join the intermediate students and learn the techniques of the five different styles taught at Martial Way. This may seem a terrible waste of one's time if they've been studying martial arts their entire lives, but allow me to put it in some perspective. First, unlike many gyms that limit the number of classes you can take, Martial Way lets their students study up to fourteen hours a week with your membership. Each beginner class is one-hour wherein you learn the basic techniques and terminology that the school uses for all of their classes (so you're not lost when you make it to more advanced classes). There are nine beginner classes offered in the evenings of each week, and one on Saturday. Theoretically, you can finish these beginner classes in two weeks if you are, in fact, an experienced practitioner. Lastly, if you are committed to truly developing yourself as a martial artist, and not simply blazing through the belts, then there is NEVER any harm in drilling the fundamentals, if you pay attention to your technique, you'll learn something new every lesson. I am presently studying at the intermediate level, but I still make it a point to go to every beginner class I can make because they are fantastic workouts (if you push yourself) and I am still developing and refining my technique every single class. It is true that students teach classes. That is to say, intermediate level students who have been at the academy for years and are near their black belts will teach the beginner's kickboxing classes. All of the classes of intermediate level or above are taught by black belts at the school. I have never felt as though the person conducting the class was incapable of doing so. What's more is that by having a variety of different instructors for a variety of levels, student's are able to receive more one on one attention. Anytime I've needed some help, there was always someone there to guide me through the techniques. As per the belt system. Guro Larry St. Clair's pedigree is quite reputable. He's a student of Ron Balicki - student of Dan Inosanto - student of Bruce Lee. Not trying to drop names here, just explain that the instructors are competent and have proven credibility. Belt systems are established as a means for each individual school to determine and show to instructors, the respective experience level of each of their students. A black belt is something that takes years of dedication, and perhaps you may not be able to take the belt to another school (although i've never studied at a school where the belt does carry over) you can always take the skills and techniques you've learned everywhere you go. In summation, this is a great school, but is not the ideal environment for everyone. They have a very positive environment, possibly too much for some people. They have intense, if somewhat simplistic to an experienced martial artist, beginner kickboxing classes. They have many enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors. They teach five different styles in one location: this means you most likely won't receive as much intensive study in one style, but you'll also be exposed to many techniques you may not have experienced. The school isn't designed to make you an MMA star, although they'd be glad to work with you if that's what you are looking for. The pricing is on par with every other school in the Austin area. Unlike those schools, Martial Way provides it students many more classes per week for their membership. I think this is a great school but the bottom line is this: contact them, try out a few classes and see if Martial Way is right for you. read more

I've been working out or doing some form of exercise all my life and I've never really found a home until Martial Way Academy. I've been to gyms before and other kickboxing and boxing classes, but after a few years of doing the same thing I get bored and move on...not at Martial Way. I've been there 6 of the 14 years they've been open and still training strong 5 or so days a week! There are multiple classes 6 days a week for you to choose from and the atmosphere is always fun and up lifting. You start out in a kickboxing class to build your endurance and add to your skills and then after a month or two of consistent training you get a free month to try out some of the specialty classes which involve such things as mma training, vale tudo, jkd, kali, advanced kickboxing just to name a few. The classes lesson's are always changing so you don't get bored and your body gets all types of different movements, plus you're always learning new stuff! They even play different music and have 100's of playlists available to change it up! If you can't always make the evening classes or have family you want to spend time with, they offer morning classes as well several days a week. They'll even do private lessons with you if that's your choice. I have been taking the private lessons for over 3 yrs now I think and it has changed my body. I lost 20 lbs that I didn't even know I needed to lose! They also participate in lots of extra activities in the community for charity and for fun and really treat you like family. They even call and/or email when you miss class! I can't imagine going anywhere else and getting the quality of training and vast schedule that they offer. I love the kickboxing classes!! I have been going on and off for the past 8 years. When I am ready to get back in shape or step up my workout I always go back. I had a baby a couple of years ago and I had not lost the baby weight. Last September I started a workout program. It was successful but when I started kickboxing in January it took it to another level. So far this year I am down 23 pounds thanks to kickboxing. It is a hard workout but I love the way it pushes me. I love all the teachers and their energy. Kickboxing is going to help me get back in the shape that I want to be in and I love that I enjoy it so much. read more

Wow! @ J H's review....Shady? Come on buddy. I have been training at Martial way for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 years. When I started I wanted something that I felt I could learn as well as get in shape from doing. My body lets me know when I miss my work out. It's my highpoint of the days I do train. As far as the Shady description goes, and I know everybody is entitled to an opinion but that doesnt mean you cant be a little off. As with most situations with schools or most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it. Martial way will help you with your goals, but you have to do your part. Dang. Larry and his team and the students that I met are a Far Far throw from Shady. They have been flexible with me and my schedule when I needed it, They are supportive and they are human man. Life happens....So I will say this. If you decide to give them a try, really test drive it, take a private lesson and tell them honestly what you want to get out of it, hit a group class, if they let you, check out a testing day. If you want to get busy with the sparring I am pretty positive you wont have a problem finding someone to tussle with in the spirit of sparring improvement, not just trying to hurt someone. I learn something from everyone up there, when I spar them or watch them spar. In closing, Larry is ginuine in wanting to change the world. It's not a bad thing. Finding my way to Martial Way Academy has been one of the best decisions/journeys of my life! I've gained about 50 lbs. in the past few years and I finally decided to do something about it! Kickboxing looked like a super fun way to workout and burn some major calories...so this past June I found an online deal to for a month of kickboxing classes at another martial arts academy in north austin....when the month was up...I thought that was the classes were ok and the workouts were so-so. Luckily...I found a similar online kickboxing deal in July at Martial Way Academy...so I bought it and boy was I surprised! While the other martial arts place had a "newer" looking place....Martial Way out surpassed my expectations in every way! Not only were the instructors AMAZINGLY helpful, energetic, knowledgeable and supportive....but the workouts seriously kicked-butt!!!! I've learned some really fun combos and the workouts always include conditioning exercises to keep your heart rate up the entire time you're there! Martial Way Academy also offers 24-day healthy eating and living challenges for members to try out....I recently completed one and went down 2 pants sizes! With the help of the instructors (especially Jamie..my personal hero) I've learned how to eat healthier and stay positive about my journey through weight loss! Great place to sweat and study martial arts. There is a super supportive and energetic atmosphere.

I was a student at Martial Way for about five years and I can honestly say I made some of my best friends studying at the school. Martial Way is not only an MMA school, but also a family. But like any family, you get out only what you put in. You are definitely encouraged to cheer each other on and if you can't be bothered to root for your classmates (who are probably rooting their butts off for you) then this place isn't for you. I took classes there initially to get in shape and learn JKD but quickly fell in love with all of their curriculum (which has admittedly changed over the years). I went from being afraid of contact, to sparring in class and finally to competing at various events like the Edge, NAGA and a Kickboxing Fight Night. I was able to train and get some great instruction in wrestling, kickboxing and even Kali (Filipino knife and stick fighting). Fight training and the Fit to Fight program were responsible for getting me into, easily, the best shape of my life. So if you want to sweat and learn some cool martial arts, I would definitely give Martial Way a try. I know I will start classes again when my family moves back to Austin and finally get my black belt! read more
