The first time they came to prune my trees. I didn't notice the difference after they came, so I thought they never went out to my property. I called the receptionist multiple times over a period of two weeks, but she was not able to get hold of Marcus (the owner) to provide me a schedule. After two weeks of continuous calling, Marcus finally told me that the work has been done. He charged me more than 800 dollars (even with discount), but ironically I couldn't notice the difference of their pruning/trimming service. I requested them to schedule another time to prune my trees. They act promptly and it was scheduled to be the next day. In the end I am feeling better, but the experience working with them is not pleasing. Their management is just terrible. They are not responsive by any means and they over-charge for the work they have done. Don't be deceived by the high review score of this company on Google Review. This company has changed its owner from Patrick to Marcus. Most of the good reviews are from the previous owner's time. read more

I thought I had an appointment set up, but nobody showed up. Later that day, I got a text from the person I was supposed to have the appointment with saying they didn't know they had an appointment. I tried to reschedule, and didn't get a reply. I don't really see any point in trying to contact them again, since they're apparently extremely disorganized, and there are approximately 500 other tree services in the Austin area. I'm sure I can find someone else to waste some more of my time, and maybe eventually I'll find someone competent. read more

I got a spam text asking me if I needed me trees trimmed. I've been meaning to call around and find someone to do it so I decided to take a chance and answer the text and get my free estimate. Someone came out two days later. The were professional, took a look around and gave me two estimates as requested for the front trees only and all my trees. It wasn't super cheap but it was very competitive given I have some huge trees that needed thinning and some big oaks that were overdue. Once that guy came out, all communication was done by text. They use I kinda automated system that send you long texts with links but I used that to confirm the estimate and schedule a time. A crew came out on time this week and worked about two hours and did what appears to be a great job. They left without taking payment and that was also communicated by text. I decided not to pay by credit card and their system texted me an address to send a check. Very easy. Aside from the fact that they found me through basically spam texting me, the company and the work is legit. Some people may find talking to a textbot annoying but it was super smooth and I'd use them again. read more

Finally had them come out and give me a quote, and they were very expensive. I wouldn't have used them anyway since their marketing tactics are scummy. read more

Unprofessional. Overcharged us. Dishonest company. On the day that they were scheduled to arrive for tree pruning service, the team not only DIDN'T SHOW UP, they also didn't call. I had to call their dispatch team 5 times throughout the day as nobody would give us a clear answer as to the delay. The next day, they arrived unannounced at 8 a.m. The team performed the agreed upon services outlined in our estimate and then a month later I received a new invoice with an additional $225 fee that was never discussed nor agreed upon. I called and emailed their team and still nobody responded. I would never recommend this company to any friend of mine. read more

I requested a free estimate. Turns out it was the owner who came around. After the hour window of arrival had passed, I called to find out if someone had come out, since I received a quote via text but didn't see or speak to anyone. He was not friendly at all, he said he came by, rang the doorbell a few times, took a look at the tree and left. I said I wished he'd called my phone, I didn't hear the doorbell. He said he did. I said I don't have any missed calls on my phone. Which I didn't. I asked how he was able to assess the tree given he had no access to my property....he said he could see enough from the gate. I told him that I had more to share. I had pictures of larvae and what the wood looks like close up. Something is eating it inside. He said send the pics and he'll take a look. I called the office number next day since I don't hear back. The office told me to call the owner for scheduling. I texted the owner and didn't hear back. The next day I called him. Again not friendly at all, I asked about the pictures and I said 'well?'. He paused and said he'll take a look, he's sure he did. Then silence and he says he's trying to identify what these could be, in the pictures. Needless to say, I will not be hiring this company for any work. He didn't even see that the tree root system is entirely under asphalt and that it poses a problem for the tree for sure. Turns out the tree is going to have to be removed altogether. And this job is going to a different company for sure. read more

These guys are in real trouble now that they have new leadership. I had Marcus come out and give me a quote. $745 to remove some dead wood and a few living branches? We negotiated down to $500. But the day the work was to be completed there was a huge lack of communication. I didn't even know the work had been done (we were home at the time) and when I looked at the tree it didn't seem like much had been taken off. Whatever work was done would have been completed in about 45 minutes. In the past, with Pat in charge, these guys did great work for me. Now it seems like it's more of a money grab. read more

Received a fair quote and service completed in June 2023 -- used a Valu-Pak coupon. I was hesitant about using Austin Tree Specialists because of the bad Yelp reviews, but had a great experience. Marcus showed up on time for the estimate. He listened to my concerns and paid attention to what I wanted to have done -- trimming all branches away from my roof so it wouldn't get damaged in the next freeze, possible removal of one tree and removal of old stump. I have a tree inbetween my house and my neighbor's house. My neighbor had aggressively trimmed the tree back to our fence line (which is his legal right). I wanted it trimmed 8-10 feet from my second story roof and chimney so I didn't have to worry about sparks from the chimney hitting the tree branches. With all this trimming I was thinking it best to cut the tree down since it would look like a rake. Marcus pointed out that once the lower limbs were trimmed back, it would encourage the tree to grow a canopy higher up (and it is starting to do just that!). He also pointed out the leave were curling indicating that it needed water. After three months, I'm still very happy with all of the trimming done and the stump removal. Marcus was professional, work was done on time and cleanup was great!!! read more

I've been searching for a while for someone to add a brace to my tree. I saw that Austin Tree Specialists had a lot experience in this area. My experience was a disaster. He said the only solution was to cut off the limbs of my 500 yr old historic Austin tree and kill all the docile bees that have been living in the tree 10+ years. He refused to listen to my concerns and charged me more than his $50 quote to even talk to me foe 15m. Since then I found that no other tree specialist charges to give a quote and a qualified company provided a real solution and though this company did not belong in this industry. read more

Something is very wrong with this company. I scheduled an appointment with Pat and he showed up for it. Only thing was, I was outside in the backyard looking at the tree when he arrived, so I couldn't hear the knock on the front door. I did have my phone on me though. And I had provided my cell phone number in the email and had talked on the phone, so why didn't he just call and ask where I was? he left his card saying he had been there. Months later, I rescheduled. we agreed on a time. he confirmed the appointment. I waited at the front door all morning. He never showed up. Then I called him. No answer. I emailed. No reply. I waited, took the morning off from work. I tried calling next day too and emailed again. no reply. months later, still no reply. I can only presume he was being spiteful because i 'missed' the first appointment. Why else wouldn't he reply? read more

We initially had Pat come out to look at a grand old live oak tree in our yard which had never had the dead wood trimmed out of it. He arrived promptly, talked to us at length about the health of the tree and gave us a fair price to do the trimming. His crew worked carefully and professionally, painting all the cut areas to prevent infection, chipping the smallest branches and cutting the larger pieces into fireplace-size pieces and stacking them. The tree looked great when they finished! We subsequently had them come out again to clear an area between our house and the road which was choked with spindly cedar, hiding a number of large live oak trees. Again they worked in a professional manner and when they finished, four magnificent, unique live oaks were revealed! Our neighbors all stopped and commented on how beautiful they were! Again, any cuts on the oaks were painted, small branches and the cedar chipped and left in a pile for us, and the larger branches were cut and stacked. We just called him this week to come and look at two of our large live oaks because they were not leafing out properly. He diagnosed that tiny, hard-to-see caterpillars were doing the damage. Once they completed their caterpillar stage, they would leave the trees and the trees would regrow their leaves. All we had to do was water and fertilize (with John Dromgoole's Ladybug organic fertilizer) the trees and they would be fine. We were so relieved! He did not charge us for this consultation. We couldn't be more happy with Pat and his crew. He is very "green", extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the trees and their environment, and will talk to you at length about any questions you have. If you love your trees as we do, I highly recommend giving Pat with Austin Tree Specialists a call! read more

I'm sad to have to write a negative review for this company. From what I can tell, the work they did on our trees was excellent. The poor rating is for the following reasons: - They started the work before I agreed to the day. They actually showed up and did work while we were out of town, despite my request that they wait till we returned. - They started the work before I signed a proposal. I had requested an updated proposal based on additional services requested and had not received it when the work was suddenly begun. As such, we had to clarify the pricing after the work was complete. - During the process of clarifying the pricing, Pat was terse and accusatory and pestered me for payment. I've been astounded by his poor customer service. This is such a shame, because it appears he is incredibly knowledgeable about trees. I recommend he gets someone else to interact with customers so that he doesn't lose them. My partner and I were looking forward to a long relationship with him, and we would have referred him to our property-owning friends, but we simply cannot accept such rude treatment. read more

We live on Barton Creek Greenbelt, so we feel an added responsibility to make sure our trees stay healthy. We wanted to hire someone who was not only a tree expert, but someone who truly respected the importance of healthy trees and would do their best to preserve them - only cutting what needed to be cut, and doing so in a manner that preserved the best of what we had. We hired Patrick Wentworth and his team at Austin Tree Specialists because Pat is a Certified Arborist and he helped to develop the Texas Oak Wilt Prevention program. He was also the first Texas Oak Wilt Certified prevention specialist in the entire State of Texas (in fact his TOWC license number is literally # 0001). Pat and his team did an excellent job! We have a very difficult lot (steep and rocky), but they made it look easy. When they were finished, the trees just looked healthy again - they had carefully trimmed away all of the dead branches, and were good about using pruning spray. They also did a good job of clearing away all of the trimmed branches. When I mentioned afterwards to Pat that I had one small concern, he immediately returned with his team to address it. I just put my house on the market 2 weeks ago, so you can imagine my total panic when I came home from work 3 days ago and noticed my 2 large red oak trees in the front yard had suddenly started dropping leaves. They were turning brown and falling off at an alarming rate. I got online and started googling tree problems in Texas, and oak wilt immediately came up. Looking at the pictures and reading about treatments, my stomach just dropped. I thought, that's it, my beautiful trees are going to die and it's going to be impossible to sell this house... I looked up tree services in Austin that treat oak wilt and emailed Austin Tree Specialists. Patrick gave me a call back, I explained what was going on with the trees, and we made an appointment for the following day. I was leaving work on my way home and Patrick called to let me know he actually was running early that day, so he had just stopped by my house to have a look at the trees already. I was so relieved when he told me that the trees do NOT have oak wilt! He asked what products I was putting on the yard and I explained that the only thing I had used was Scott's winter turf builder fertilizer in the fall. Patrick explained that the time released fertilizer with weed killing herbicides I put on the grass in the fall coupled with the insane amount of rain we have been getting lately had thrown the trees out of whack and that they would recover in time. He said he has seen a lot of cases just like mine this year due to the amount of rain we have been getting. Patrick was very polite and knowledgable and I felt so much better after talking to him. He also waived my consulting fee since it was such a simple diagnosis. Overall, great customer service and such a relief to know my trees will be ok! read more
