It's hard finding free meeting spaces for community groups that are open after hours (however, it does mean that it's not open during the day as it's used by a U3A). There are a number of smaller meeting rooms downstairs and a much larger space upstairs (with lift access) that can fit 70+ people. There's also a large kitchen space that can be used for meetings as well. Be aware that this means there are usually two or three different groups meeting there at any one time so you may want to have someone at the door to help guide people to the right room. For an inner-city venue, there's plenty of on-street parking. The Coopers Ale House is 2 minute stroll down the road if you need a bite to eat or a more casual venue for after-meeting drinks. Just like the other Adelaide City Council community centres, there's free Wi-Fi but be aware that it can be a little flaky in the back rooms. Jess and the team that work there are fantastic and very accommodating. They have a projector, whiteboards and markers available on request. It's worth making your bookings well in advance as it's popular and there are some groups that meet regularly there. If you're stuck for a venue or want something to yourself, you can try the Southwest community centre that can be open after-hours on negotiation.

With all the up market shops on King William Road, its nice to find this one quaint little place…read morethat almost feels like it belongs to another era - that's how I feel about the Australia Post post office at Hyde Park. This is possibly the tiniest post office I've ever been to and it is a one man show. There seems to be just the one person on duty and he's made this his domain. While you can still access all the normal Australia Post services, you had just better hope there's not more than three other people ahead of you to post their letters because you simply won't get inside. I have heard people comment on some sort of rudeness in this particular post office but I have to stress that I've never experienced it and I find the service friendly and always helpful. Even if you just go and visit once, stop by at this tiniest of post offices just to experience the sheer cuteness of the place. I would be really interested to know if anyone knows of a smaller post office branch in an inner city location.

There are no displays of cards and cookbooks and tennis rackets and washing machines that you can buy like all of the other Australia Post outlets these days (ok, some of those products may be exaggerated), but I like it that way. Though sparse and squishy, I love this post office. The lady who always seems to be behind the counter is friendly, efficient, and never too busy to patiently answer questions. This is the place to get in, conduct your business, and get out quickly. An ideal way to go about sending stuff in the mail.

So you can imagine my surprise when I went into Australia Post the other day and felt like I was being transported into some space shuttle of the future. Clean lines, no isles full of cheap gifts you will never send to relatives overseas, limited product in store, fluro red lighting, someone on a Hoverboard could have zoomed past and it wouldn't have been out of place! Aus Post are now giving you a "self check out" option, which even I as a Gen Y'er was too scared to try. Apparently you can weigh your parcel, pay a bill or post a letter withi this machine. I'm sure that's the way of the future but for now, putting a good old stamp on the front of an envelope and knowing its going to be delivered to someone by a guy on a motorbike is the greatest reward about sending a letter! Even during "peak hour" (1pm) I was served quickly and with a smile!

Wow, this is one of the most impressive Australia Post shops I have visited!…read more Whereas most around this area are small, with only 1 person serving a massive line of retirees, this Post Shop is large, bright, clean, well set out, with at least 2 or 3 staff serving every time I have visited. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable ... another rarity! They helped me decide between services, and gave me the best solution for the price. All the staff I have come across are switched-on, and great at customer service. There's also plenty of space for preparing postage and the like - oh, and pens at every station! While this is not within walking distance to my work, if I have a lot to do, it is definitely worth getting in my car because of that extra level of service ;)

The staff are quite nice and helpful although I wish their were a few ore who worked the floor as the demand for attention at the teller is normally so strong I feel that if I ask a complicated question those behind me in the queue start boring holes into the back of my head with their eyes as I take up more time. Service has continued to decline and staff aren't keen on staying open more than a minute past 5pm so tough luck if you walk in 5 minutes before close to make a transaction! It isn't too busy in the middle of the day though so at least you are able to avoid a long wait and once served are quickly dealt with. There is a particular female staff member who works most days and still refuses to show an interest in her job or providing a warm welcome into the store but I guess I wouldn't be too happy if I worked for the postal service either to be honest...

For the parents, it's a great stop off for the kids. There's a good, open kids book section complete with mini kid-sized cushions for you to awkwardly try to sit on as you read to your kids. Need a bit of quiet time? Have no fear there's free wifi here too if you need to check those footy scores while the kids explore the rest of what the library has to offer. - but why let them have all the fun? In the Innovation Lab, there are 3D printers to check out, a 3Doodler (a pen that writes vertically...) to play with and not to mention, there are a few books there too. Centrally located, the new Adelaide City Library sits right at the heart of Adelaide City in the new Rundle Place complex, overlooking the hustle and bustle of Rundle Mall. The entrance to the City Library is tucked down a lane way (Francis Street) and up 6 flights of stairs (or Level 3 via the lift). You can also enter via the Rundle Place car park lifts where it's actually on Level 6. Quirky nuances but all part of the adventure... It has everything you'd expect from a modern library - plenty of computers, reading spaces, books, media and even a very nice outdoor reading area. But this library is more than a place to go find a good book, it's a community hub that's bursting with potential. The whole library has the feel of a flexible, modular space with a number of studios and labs available to be used by community groups for everything from computer game development to art exhibitions. As well as the studios, there are also a few specialised areas like the Innovation Lab with those cool 3D toys. The Digital Hub also has a suite of computers and the library offers regular free training from the basics like how to use an iPad to using social media for your business. For the history buffs, the History Hub serves as your go-to place for a look back in time. Finally, for the parents with small kids, there is a very clean Parents Room in the a Rundle Place food court. To get there, head out the 'back' entrance of the Library towards the carpark and head down the lifts to the lower ground level and follow the signs. Back in my day, a visit to my local Norwood library was an adventure. I would get so excited about…read morethe range of books, magazines, videos and cassette tapes I could borrow that I'd often go over the borrowing limit and have to make the tough call at the front desk of which ones I'd leave behind. Today it seems libraries have upped the anti of "free stuff" you can borrow and services you can use. The City Library is a hub of free internet, books, mags, DVDs and of course a place for you to design your own 3D toy... hang on what? You can print in 3D now? Well take me Back to the Future and call me Marty - the City Library is full of new technologies even I don't know how to use. However, even tech dinosaurs like me can still learn how to produce music or a stop motion lego movie in their production studio or even design and produce a 3D toy in their Fab Lab. Check out their free community activity schedule for all the times and details. To be honest I've never actually come here to borrow books, but instead I've made use of the free high-speed internet and quiet space for working when I have a break during a day of meetings. I'm also keen to try their meeting rooms and digital hub training space for seminars as well as access their database from the SA archives (history nerd alert). This modern library is a great community centre and space rising high above the Mall and provides a little peace away from the busy shoppers.
