Watch out for several things: they are running under a new name: "Wild Health Asheville" and Dr. Vickery is no longer seeing patients publicly through insurance but rather under a privatized system which is why they changed their name. These new services are extremely expensive. Additionally although they "pride" themselves through their women's health and OBGYN practices, they are not prepared to provide women with pads or feminine products after these services. Staff turnover is extremely high as they go through a third party temp agency and fire well meaning employees for simple things like showing up to work and using the rest room as soon as they clock in. Remember, this is a doctor's office and the employees are punished for their bodily functions. Staff drama is extremely common. Steer clear. read more

I was with Vicery Family Medicine and felt well cared for and heard. Then Dr. Vicery changed direction and added more doctors who were aggressive with treatment and at one point would not renew my prescription for diabetes until I had some very expensive tests not covered by my insurance. I was in a dilema and they seemed to shrug their shoulders and had an attitude towards me that I was not cooperating. They held firm and I had to find another doctor who could help me. I could not take the additional medications prescribed to control my diabetes because they made me severely sick, digestively and I didn't trust the doctors there any longer. Then Dr. Vicery moved into another area of care that was not for the patients and clearly for making lots of money. Lousy move. do not go to this practice. read more

This office is now requiring its patients to pay them a monthly fee in addition to what you and your insurance pay for services, whether you see them or not. I am an hourly pay worker and can't make ends meet as it is and now I'm being blackmailed by my doctor just to retain her in case I need her. That's supposed to be what my insurance is for. They are being greedy. Also, I have asked her 3 times now to please order a specific lab test for me. It costs her nothing. No extra work involved. I just need her to write the order. Every time she says she will consider it and still hasn't done it. I am not asking her permission. I'm an adult. Yet she refuses. I need a doctor that actually listens to me and doesn't just waste my time by thinking she is helping by looking at my vitals and saying everything is ok when I am telling something is not right. READ THIS REVIEW !!! Horrible experience. I switched to Vickery Family Medicine to have a male Dr. that was closer to my age. I suffer from anxiety which took me YEARS to finally accept that I needed help for with medication, instead of fighting it on my own (I'm a guy it's hard to admit things like this sometimes). The second I was in the door Dr. "rhymes with Gayer" all but accused me of drug seeking and addiction. He basically called me a liar, that there were discrepancies with my prescriptions and yet wouldn't check my CVS records or speak with my pharmacist to see first hand that nothing was out of order at all. He wouldn't take 60 seconds to make that phone call! He dragged out getting my medical records for a month, wouldn't call my previous Dr for communication, AND purposefully scheduled my labs and testing (which frankly would prove I'm not abusing my meds) 20 days beyond my prescription refills. It takes months to get dialed in on depression and anxiety medication and this "Dr." was literally ignoring my mental health completely by doing all of these things. Really? Take me off my meds before allowing me to get my meds? This is not how any of this works. I called them for two weeks straight, did the foot work to get my medical records to them, warned them constantly that I had such and such days left before I was out of medicine, and they couldn't even give me the respect of a phone call saying YES or NO to refilling the medication that I need. So if you read this far, I really hope you consider what kind of medical professional you will be dealing with. I was treated like I was a meth-head and the anxiety of dealing with a Dr that wouldn't even get to know me as a patient or my medical needs. I write this from urgent care where I am currently getting my prescription filled by the senior attending dr. The Head Chief and all his staff are completely baffled as to who this dr. is that he would not give me my anxiety medication. Switching Dr's again is a pain but oh-so worth the relief. This is my medical doctor and I don't take my health lightly, especially as a mission hospital employee. He is easily the best physician I have seen in a long time. His office staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always looking to help out however they can. From the CNAs and Physician Assistants to the nurse practitioner, everyone there is ready to help. Despite the time your scheduled to see the doc, if u need more time he'll happily provide it. His knowledge of general medicine and knowledge of specialty conditions and specialists to refer you too is awesome! 2 of my other doctors see Dr Vickery, so that's gotta be a good sign. Half the nurses I know see him too. I can't say enough good things about Dr Vickery. Try this practice, you won't be disappointed. read more

My husband and I are in the process of becoming licensed foster parents. Part of the process includes a doctor completing a physical evaluation form (also part of the application is fingerprinting, background checks, references, a six-week training course, multiple meetings with social workers, etc.) I have been going to Sona and seeing Vickery doctors since November of 2016. I saw Emily multiple times but then I was unable to continue to have her as my doctor because she was only seeing urgent care patients (or something to that effect, I don't quite remember). In January of 2018, I saw a doctor at Sona to get a prescription filled. He then suggested I become established at Vickery. For my follow up appointment at Vickery, I saw Jennifer for the first time. We went over my prescription and I mentioned the DSS form and that I would make an appointment for my physical (my husband and I didn't have the form from the social worker at that time). When I called to make the appointment, Jennifer changed her hours to times that didn't work for me. I saw Jan instead and brought the form with me. She completed the majority of the form but wanted me to come back a second time for blood work so she could sign off on the "communicable diseases" part of the form (the only section left to be signed off on). The next week, I came back for the blood work and brought the form once again back. After the lab took my blood, the nurse told me that I'd have to come back a third time to see Jennifer to go over my medical history (of which they have because since November of 2016 my history has been in the Vickery health portal). I was also told I had to come back a third time so Jennifer could go over my lab work (something that could be done over the phone and my results came back negative for all diseases and all my numbers are within normal range). When I protested the third office visit for one simple form, the nurse said she would talk to Jennifer. I left the paper there and left the office. Days later, I got a call saying that yes, I would need to be seen again and Jennifer would CONSIDER filling out the paper, no promises. All that is left on the paper is checking yes or no if I have communicable diseases, so what is there to consider? I now plan to find another practice where I'm not given the run around. I understand the need to be thorough, but it seems like they don't know how the foster licensing process works and acted like they were the gatekeepers to us fostering with this one form. I'd also like to add that when I met with Jan, she said she "hates filling out these forms because she doesn't know the child and if I harm the child, she doesn't want that on her conscience" What!? Does she say that to parents who conceive naturally too? I see the positive reviews Vickery has received and I think that's wonderful (truly), but I felt it was only fair to share my experience. read more

They are the best practice in Asheville and you can't find a more compassionate group anywhere. They have treated me the best of any doctors I have ever had and are easy to work with on all levels. Dr Benjamin Mayer has no business attempting to treat women. He was judgmental from the start. I always hated the way he looked at me. He didn't understand, nor could he even listen to figure out how to help a middle aged woman in menapause with ADD. I asked for a referal to a specialist since he clearly was incapable of helping. He dismissed me as a patience without so much as a phone call or a warning. He only gave me the referal after dismisal. AND ANOTHER THING... *Having ADD, i showed up 7 minutes late once, checked in and waited 30 minutes before receptionist decided to tell me I had to reschedule because I missed the appointment. AND ANOTHER THING... *today i received a letter from a collection agency. I had spoken to the billing department so many times and they assured me not to worry about it. They kept saying they were refiling. I guess they finished and didn't even call me. Right to collections. I am disgusted with the ENTIRE PRACTICE and how they operate I hope this will steer you clear from ever considering VICKERY FAMILY MEDICINE OR DR BENJAMIN MAYER. I have been treated unprofessionally and unethically. One star = a middle finger to the most humiliating experience ever imaginable from medical practice. Do not go here. read more

Started coming here in 2014 Jan O'Hara is my provider I highly recommend her for women she is caring , she specializes in women, and just has general good manner with patients. She will go above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of. My husband sees Dr. mayor, he has been so wonderful and is caring yet straight forward and he is a family man. The phlebotomist they have on staff is absolutely amazing if you go to had your blood Drawn don't have to worry about feeling a thing she has experience and is kind, I would like to add front desk staff is very pleasant and they are always helpful. read more

Excellent health care. Dr. Vickery successfully walks the fine line between striving for prevention through lifestyle choices and turning to pharmaceuticle solutions when needed. I've managed my diabetes with his guidance using a combination of exercise, nutrition and minimum pharmaceutical intervention. No insulin. My entire family goes to this practice, my son sees Dr Meyer and he's been great. My daughter sees Dr. Vickery. My wife also. It's fantastic to have a practice that can accommodate my family with such high quality health care. read more

My experience with Dr. Vickery has always been positive, however the staff is horrible, and incredibly rude. They also dictate what he hears, or is at least is informed of. Even after I left his practice, Talisha and Jeff have continued to try and discredit my name to both Dr. Vickery, and others throughout the community. Ultimately, they have me kicked out of his practice because I was asked to reschedule my appointment, when I showed up everyone was mad that I missed the original appointment, so that gave them the perfect reason to tell Dr. Vickery that I was yelling, and discrediting his treatment. Boom, they got rid of me, and who would want to go back after that. It would be different if I hadn't heard the exact same story from several others. read more

If you are looking caring and concerned healthcare, then look somewhere else. Been trying for the past week to get results for blood work taken almost two month ago. All I can get from Vickery was that it was misplaced, and someone will call me. - They are not organized enough to track and realize they had reports out that never came back. I was forgotten about until I got the bill from the lab and called Vickery, that was over a month ago and my doctor still has not contacted me. I've stuck it out for a year thinking it was me, but Dr Mayor is the least caring non-communitive doctor you will never meet. But being blown off for the month and a half with something as important blood test results and a misplaced lab report crosses the line to just plain disrespect. I have been suffering in pain for a year with no answers or suggestions, treatment plan, plan to get a diagnosis, just a lot of tests and lots of money spent. I had this exact discussion with Dr Mayor several months ago and nothing has changed as evidenced by this latest episode. And to be fair it is just not the doctor, it is the attitudes when you speak to people on the phone, the office the PAs it's a culture that runs through Vickery. These people will take your money, but you will get nothing in return. read more

Well, I believe in giving credit where credit is do. I had a follow up appointment after I wrote my review and was pleased to know my complaints had been corrected w changes in communications made. Dr. Mayer is my MD and I appreciate his making changes and being a caring doctor and a super human being. It is better to make a complaint, in my case a little nicer, and get things changed than just harbor bad feelings and it might help another patient.. Dr. Mayer gets 10 stars!!! read more

I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Vickery and the rest of the staff at Vickery Family Medicine. I have been a patient of Dr. Vickery's for six years now and I can confidently say that every single experience I've had with him along with the rest of his staff has been a pleasant one. Dr. Vickery is far from your average family physician; his systems-based approach to addressing my body's concerns over the years has made me a more happy, healthy and whole individual. He takes his time with his patients and will thoroughly answer any questions you have. Although it rarely happens, Dr. Vickery is quick to tell you if he is unsure of something and if he needs to consult with a colleague (whether within or outside of his practice) to further investigate your case. Humility is something I value greatly in any healthcare provider and I'm happy to say Dr. Vickery exemplifies it well. Although he is humble and kind, Dr. Vickery is also regarded as one of the best family physicians in the area and it's easy to see why. I feel valued and respected as a patient and I have never felt like any of my concerns were foolish or mistaken. One of Vickery Family Medicine's other physicians, Dr. Mayer, is also a wonderful physician. You will be in great hands with either of these two highly talented individuals. I have been with this practice for several years. During that time it has expanded greatly. With this expansion the quality of care and attention to individual needs is no longer there. They no longer take into consideration the individual patient and how drugs or their environment can affect the patient and adapt care based on that information. This use to be a great practice and I had the utmost respect for Dr. Vickery. However, that is now gone with the growth of the practice. Very sad. read more

My husband had a 5 bypass 4 years ago. He is on a lot of meds. He has had sharp stabbing pains in his upper thigh and leg for over a year. They increased potassium and it helped... then it started back. He went back and they increased potassium....still no reason why. Was still hurting....can't sleep....he called Dr and left a message and no one called so he went to after hours clinic and they wouldn't see him because he didn't have a 25 copay....now remember he has been seen several times for this same issue.....and just a week before... and they turned him away....gave him attitude when he said what am I suppose to do go to er.....he did lose his temper and if you know Mike you know this is unlike him....he is very non-con frontational...and no one has called him back and I called too.....this is ridiculous and unacceptable. It is sad when a Dr cares more about money than the health of their patients.....now we sit at the ER and I know it means nothing to Vickery....but if we can save someone from going thru this....I will be letting everyone I know about this.
