We brought back a couple of tiny restaurant sized jars of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry , and honey and then a full sized jar of strawberry. I regret not bringing back full sized jars of black cherry and blackberry which were absolutely superb. All the jams and jellies we brought home were perfectly flavored and not overly sweet.

To say that this experience was fabulous is to say that a Volkswagen is a car. This is a very old and well established luxury food company. They started out as purveyors of fine fruits, jams, teas and coffees to Parisians in 1850. They have since expanded to locations around the world. I must say that my eyes popped out of my head when I saw the artful displays of goods in the downstairs shop. There wasn't an apple out of place. Most were individually wrapped in gold paper. There was an unobtrusive aide ready to help you pick out anything you had your eye on and he made it known to me that I was not to touch. Quickly, my friend and I made our way upstairs to dine and dining it was. Superb comes to mind. To be honest, I didn't expect such a high price tag and I was on a budget so I ordered soup and a salad. My friend ordered an entree and that was all. But we were served like royalty, like Ms. and Ms. Gotrocks with no attitude or shade thrown. We just oohed and ahhed our way through our mini dinner. The bread service was outstanding and the butter was so divine I could have eaten it for dessert. Coconut flan: not the typical mexican flan. I'd say 100% better! It tastes like a soft cake/ firm custard with a hint of coconut and only slightly sweet. A light hint of vanilla kisses the tongue but that natural milk flavor seduces thereafter. Pear tart: thin and not too sweet. Delicious! Fresh pear layers the tart. White "home-made" yogurt: tart and perfectly milky. They give you sugar packets to tame the tartness. Similar to American style Greek yogurt but a lot tastier.

Only good things..... They are part of a shopping mall that stays open about an hour after the regular retail stores close. This way you can get what you really came for without having to carry it around while shopping. Once outside one can go from window to window looking at the Christmas displays. I can't think of anything quite like it in the U.S., but if you've been to the Harrods food halls or department stores in Asia, you might recognize the dense arrangement of mini restaurants and food purveyors, spread out across several floors. My first visit was for an hour-long hangout with friends, and we had a hell of a time finding a place to sit down while we got a coffee or snack. We went up and down the escalator scouting things out, but almost every spot with seating was overrun on a Saturday afternoon. We ended up at an okay pan-Asian spot called Rice Street between lunch and dinner service, getting boba and sheltering from the chaos. I went two days in a row on my more recent trip to Paris, first for a Glace BACHIR pop-up, and then to get an easy on-the-go lunch before getting sucked into the broader maw of the main Galeries Lafayette. It was crowded both days, the ground floor crawling with people. Both the ice cream and my sandwich, from Chez Meunier, were delicious. I haven't quite figured out Galeries Lafayette Gourmet, but it's a worthwhile destination if you want to run around trying pastries and chocolates and other French delectables.
