So sorry to have to write this poor review, but I had such a disappointing experience which cost me greatly in time and money. I feel others should be warned. I needed family film reels digitized so I could edit them in Final Cut. I din't realize until it had been done that Arno didn't have the equipment to do the 16mm reels so he used another company, Green's Camera World, and THEY don't have a proper system - BUT, they did clean the film before digitizing. Arno did not clean the 8mm film. Here is a clip comparison (I sent this one 8mm reel to Green's Camera World) and you can see the dramatic difference. Greens Camera World on the left. Arno agreed to reimburse me for the 8mm, but now wants to charge me pickup and delivery fee for his time and travel to Greens World for the 16mm. On top of all of this, I was entrusting Arno with dozens of my wildlife rescue Mini-DV tapes. He screwed up on these, too. Not only were they not the file size / type I needed, but some were sped up. Horrible. Thankfully he agreed to and has reimbursed my charity for the cost. I still await full reimbursement from Arno. I will amend this review when he makes good on his word "I'm happy to refund anyone who is unhappy with my work, or if I screwed something up," Arno, I look forward to you making this right. For those who are looking to have their home movies digitized, I have learned this: IMPORTANT: Though sometimes conversationally mistaken for the MPEG codec, please note that the "M"-JPEG codec is NOT the same thing as MPEG. The preferred M-JPEG codec maintains individual data for each frame of film on a separate digital video frame while the MPEG codec uses information from preceding video frames to fill in missing information on the next video frame. What you want are files that are NOT CONVERTED from their original format (what ever their original format is when exporting from their film scanners software). Meaning you want files that are direct from their motion picture film scanner in .MOV (Motion J-PEG) Quicktime. If you are MAC-based using either Imovie or Final Cut you will not be able to use Numbered Image Sequence (NIS) files which are individual frames (pictures) of each frame of film. I called him last minute because I was trying to get about 8 mini VHS tapes all transferred to a DVD and Zip drive as a rush job to surprise my friend for his birthday. What a great find!!! I wanted to have 4 old (25+ year VHS PAL) video cassettes converted to mp4 format and also about 10 original 8mm and Super 8mm film digitized to mp4. Some of the film reels were 60 years old!!! Clearly they all contained valuable (to us) footage. I did not feel comfortable sending this type of project off through the mail to the "big name Digitizers" that you see advertised.....they all claim they have never lost any...but who knows!!! ..and of course you cannot talk with the actual people that do the hands on conversions etc. I found Arno via his advert in the local Monterey Newspaper ..contacted via email, then quick chat on phone and within 48 hours we met up at a mutually convenient location to hand him the actual tapes and reels and discuss the project. In under 10 days we met again and I picked up all the originals plus everything had been loaded onto a memory stick. Arno had repaired some of the breaks and/or splices and cleaned up the original films, before digitizing, and they looked terrific. During this time I had found another set of mislaid VHS PAL video cassettes containing a compilation of 12 previously digitized copies of Super 8mm reels our wedding in the UK 50 years ago and other events of the era...so ...same deal..quick call, meet up and 7 days later, precious memories back in our hands in mp4 on the same memory stick for immediate viewing, sharing with friends and family, and for me to start to try my hand at using iMovie to create our own compilations. I cannot recommend Arno highly enough... It is so great to have this high level of skill and service right on our doorstep here in Monterey. I highly recommend Arno at AV Transfer. He carefully digitized countless old family film reels, audio reels from the 1940s, audio tapes, and VHS tapes for me and a slew of my father-in-law's old Korean War slides. Arno, the owner of this company, was recommended by a local high quality independent music store. I had a LP record from when I bought it in 1963. Ramsey Lewis Pot Luck. I had played the LP so long it was barely decent to listen to at all. After not playing it for 30 years, I went to the music store and asked if they could get the LP in any format at all. They got a slightly used one for me but it still had scratches etc. A disappointment. Then I called Arno. I now have a cd, the quality of the sound rivals being at the concert when it was originally recorded! Arno is not inexpensive, not is a brain surgeon!
