Easy online reservation process. Our ski rentals were ready for us when we arrived and we were helped immediately. They were able to accommodate my boyfriend's requests for his demo skis which is nice and said they appreciated the detail. They answered his questions about a potential sale without being pushy - just helpful! The value is astounding. This is easily the least I have ever paid for rentals, and we both got good quality/condition products. I was going to book with an Epic-affiliated shop for the discount with my ski pass, but Avalanche Sports was still more affordable by a long shot. I am glad they popped up on the map when I was looking at options! Came out to roughly $76/day for the two of us together for 6 days. Several of the Epic-affiliated stores nearby are starting at that price point per person. I would definitely book ski rentals with Avalanche Sports again when I come back to Breckenridge. read more

I have been coming to Avalanche Sports on South Main for bike repairs for the past several years and I have always had good experiences. The bike techs do great work and they have always been willing to listen to and answer questions. Just the other day, Rich thoroughly went through a few different part replacement options for me to consider, being patient in explaining some of the more subtle technical details to me, which made my decision making easy. They are typically very quick on their turnaround for repairs - and they oftentimes get the bike done even sooner than their initial estimates. So, I went in to the shop for brake caliper bolts and washers. The mechanic was out so they offered for me to leave it and they'd figure out what size hardware I needed when the mechanic got back. I go back later to pick up the bike and hardware - $35 for the hardware, which seems kinda high but I don't mind at all, it's Breck. $25 in labor, just to pick out bolts and washers! $63 in total for about $10 worth of hardware! $25 in labor to do the equivalent of grabbing a couple of different sizes of shoes out of the back for a customer to try on. The first time I've ever been charged labor anywhere for what amounted to basic service - as they pointed out, no installation or any amount of actual bike maintenance was done. And the cherry on top - I get back to put the calipers on and with the washers I was given, the rotor was rubbing on the top of the inside of the caliper - meaning I wasn't even given the right size washers hahaha! $25 in labor just to figure out what I need - not even install anything - and I don't get what I need. $25 for 5 minutes worth of 'work' is $300/hour... If I was charging that much, I'd at least take the time to remove the brake pads and double check that the rotor isn't rubbing on the inside caliper. Luckily I had taller washers to get the proper fit. Here's some photos/videos to prove that they gave me the wrong washers. I'm local and I've been in multiple times before and gotten great service. Just as promised, it was answered by a human and Kathleen answered all my questions. Upon on arrival, I met John. I needed to have two pairs of ski bindings adjusted to fit new ski boots. Just like their website promised, the service was super courteous, very prompt, and indeed at a tremendous value. I'm a resident of Breck and live just up the street from the North location. I've had at least 10-15 guests rent here every year since 2014. The last three times this year the service has been terrible. Yesterday they were so rude that even my 8 and 12 year old said something to me about it. We were the only ones in the store with two employees so it wasn't a matter of being short staffed. Sorry to leave the bad review but it's time for me to find another local shop. read more

Saved our vacation! Needed an emergency rear brake replacement and they got on it quickly so we could catch a bit of dirt that evening. Jesse is super smart and helpful and did not try to sell us things we didn't need. Everyone knowledgeable and helpful. Disinterested staff, no attempt to answer any general questions, complete annoyance when we asked for a different size ski, and to top it off they then overcharged. The best that can be said is when later confronted with the overcharging they agreed (most reluctantly and after insinuating I was a liar) to refund the difference between the quote and what had been charged. Be very careful with their online booking system - the price it spits out is (according to the shop staff) simply wrong! Quite easily the worst ski rental experience I have had anywhere on earth. This shop's technicians are both incompetent and disengaged. They set up our gear in a way that was fundamentally unsafe and literally said nothing (they just stared at me) when I let them know about it. For starters, we went in to demo a new snowboard with the intention of buying one. The technician said he skis and doesn't know anything about snowboards but nobody else came to help us. The shop had about 6 different boards to offer in two brands and the tech knew literally nothing about any of them - not how they're cambered, not which ones are stiffest, his recommendation was "you can look them up on your phone." We chose out a deck and asked if he could put decent bindings on it. He told us that the demos just get rental bindings, but it was late and we wanted to go home so we took the rental bindings. I made the mistake of allowing him to set them up. Once we got on the hill, the person riding the demo pointed out that his front binding was rattling around while he was riding. I took a look and found that it could be pulled almost 2 cm away from the board on either side. When I popped the rental bindings off the board (they were quick releases), the mounting plates were firmly fixed to the deck, but when I snapped the bindings back on they were again rattling all over the place. At that point I was picturing the front binding popping off this board while my loved one was flying down the hill at high speed (mostly I was picturing the compound femur fracture and toboggan ride that would result). We ended up having to strip the mounting hardware for the rental bindings off the board and throw his old bindings (thank goodness we had them with us) on it so that he could ride out the day safely. When we took the board back to the shop, I let the technician (different guy - equally useless) know that the bindings his shop provided were completely unsafe and that he should probably check them out before renting them to another person. He literally just stared at me - didn't say a word, and then threw them back on the rack with all the others. This shop does not care about your safety or the safety of your family. Do yourself a favor and rent gear from somewhere with some semblance of a moral compass. read more

Rented a mountain bike for a week. Staff was very helpful in suggesting some fantastic rides, even providing maps at no cost. The bike suffered a flat. The staff repaired the bike and repaid me for the personal supplies I used post flat (CO2 canisters and a tube). I read the negative reviews in Yelp, and I disagree; I had a great experience. I recently went to Avalanche by recommendation by my hotel concierge. She said it was her favorite place to rent ski and snowboarding equipment. She was so right! I was there for skis and my two friends were there for boards. John, the owner, was patient and kind with myself and my friends, including one who had never been on the slopes in her life. He made us feel welcome and offered tips on how to make sure our boots fit properly and comfortably while on the slopes. Then he asked us which hotel we were staying at...we were at Great Divide Lodge... and he gave us an additional discount for the two day rental...woohoo! Politics do not make a good ski tech! They have invested in a good balance between the precision of machine tuning and the care of a human touch. Instead of shoving a ski in one end and having it come out tuned, which any monkey could do, no offense. They use the Montana htt which I used when it first came out when I was a ski tech many years ago, giving them a precision base edge. These guys have always been good to me. read more

First time coming here, and I gotta say, it was a short and sweet visit. I have my own snowboarding boots already so I only needed a snowboard. All I had to do was fill out a form, which took a minute at most. The worker looked at my paper real quick and got me a board within a minute. I bought a bike in Sept 2018 and not sure I would buy their demo bikes again. (I would get them inspected by a trusted outside mechanic before paying.) Took the bike to get looked at by my mechanic after I bought it and he said there was an issue with the fork. Drove all the way back to Breck from Vail to have the bike looked at by the mechanic at Avalanche and they told me I just needed to replace the rebound knob (that I did not break). They did not tell me that I could have the fork warrantied by Fox either. Turns out the damper did need to replaced according to Fox. I had a pretty bad injury on this bike in the fall after riding it 3x and I'm not a beginner by any means. Not sure it would have happened had the fork been working properly. Just want future buyers to have all options as they did not give them to me and to be weary of the demo bikes they sell -- they do not fully inspect them or take care of the issues when you find them. Yes, they are demos, but that shouldn't justify letting a bike leave a store that is broken. The owner Mark seems friendly enough, but not sure the staff is as knowledgeable as they should be. read more

My buddy lives in Breck, and recommended this place. First of all, online reservations made everything easy. When we showed up to pick up my gear, it was all ready to go. Wide selection of skis, I went with the Icelantic, and they were fantastic in the powder. Skis, poles and boots cost $24/day. Seriously? Thats so cheap! Their location cannot be beat, and the staff is fantastic. I will definitely rent from them when I'm back in town. I cannot post this without mentioning its adjacent to North Side Pizza with their $1 PBR pints. After returning my gear, we grabbed some delicious pizza and beer next door. read more

Stopped in after breakfast at the Blue Moose to rent skis for my son. We were there too early to rent for the next day but they set us up with a rental package for the next day anyway. This saved us an extra trip into town later that day. My son is a pretty good skier and wanted skis that were a little longer than the skis that were initially recommended. They worked with us to find the right length skis and took some extra time to make sure the bindings were set correctly - a little tighter than normal. The service was a little "gruff" but all in all I was happy with the outcome. On our last day of skiing my son said "I really like these skis". Can't beat that... read more

I am not one to write a bad review, but this place really hit a nerve. These guys do a solid tune job, but I have had several negative experiences with the staff here. I live locally, and my husband and I have given them a lot of referral business. I'm usually extremely tolerant with employees who have bad attitudes, but they have been downright rude to me and my guests on multiple occasions. If they are treating a local this way, I can't imagine how they must treat the tourists. I'm disappointed to say that I will no longer be giving them my business. read more

This previous week I spent $600 on equipment rental from Avalanche sports and when someone inadvertently took the pools, the manager on duty refused to even call the rental place where they had been returned. The manager instead of trying to help me after spending a good chunk of money at Avalanche sports, refused to make a simple phone call. He was incredibly rude and had no sense of customer curtesy. Recommend booking in advance with Christies or trying to find a rental shop closer to a lift. Spending an hour fixing your gear is not fun. I am extremely dissatisfied with the service here at Avalanche. What was frustrating was when I rented my skis and took them up to Brekenridge, the bindings kept popping off. Multiple people had to come help me and it took forever because I had to scrape the bottom of my shoe with the poles. People who were experienced up there even told me that the boots they gave me were really poor quality. I've never had this experience before where this has been a issue and I asked the employee if it was due to the snow being very powdery and she avoided the topic. I live in San Diego so coming all the way to Colorado to ski for part of my trip was a very disheartening experience. read more

I was in Breck for 5 days trying snowboarding for the first time. Not only did their employee Ian recommend a good board for my experience level (some longboarding), he outfitted me with a helmet and was super friendly and informative about what to expect. This place was within walking distance of where I was staying, and had very reasonable prices. I can't recommend this place enough-the boots and Gnu board I rented made my entire trip, and I was tackling black diamond runs by the end of my fourth day. Thanks again Avalanche and Ian! read more

Great deal. First ski rental was fabulous -- very comfortable Salomon boots (fell in love!) and good standard skis. Second rental -- Nordica boots were miserable and ruined my only day in Vail. Details: I understand that it was a busy time and they accommodated with the remaining equipment in stock, but when I said it hurt in the store, they shouldn't have insisted they were the same boots and would fit fine without my jeans. That's true to some extent, but there was something wrong with the boots' tongue that was warped and hurt a ridiculous amount. I only managed to do 2 lifts. Overall: one great day and one horrible day. 3 stars but 4 stars in the end for making it better with a full refund on the second day. read more

I don't write to many reviews but this place was a scam. Over charged me twice. Had to go back the first time to get a refund and still over charged me. Then I had to return my snowboard rentals because the forecast said it was going to rain to avoid an extra day charge.I had a three day rental, returned it after the first and charged me the regular price for the one day I used it instead of just giving me the multi day discount for all days. I went somewhere else for the rentals after the bad experience. Beware stay away. read more

I had to stop at Avalanche for a minor adjustment on a bike. It took the technician about two minutes to complete the work and the work was satisfactory. The only thing is they charged me $15 for no kidding two minutes of work which makes me wonder about what they'd charge for more serious bike work. I'd keep looking in the future. read more

We have been renting at Avalanche Sports for about 8 years, and have never had a problem. First off I would like to mention how the skis here are actually good and a decent price. The skis at our hotel were way more expensive and looked like toys, especially the kids skis. We have never had problems with the service here, and it has never been overly crowded, the workers obviously care for their jobs, and want to help people. Make sure to get the 1$ a day insurance thing, as, for that price, you may as well not worry about falling or scratching your skis on rocks. Lastly make sure to have fun on the slopes with some great skis and poles. :) read more
