Strongly rooted and healthy root systems! I have ordered over $500 worth of plants from them this year and the quart pots they sell out compete gallon pots you buy locally. DO NOT BUY FROM AVANT GARDENS. First of all they sent me the wrong plant. It barely grew and when it finally started to show itself I realized that it was NOT what I had ordered and paid $93 for. This is a special place. It is kind of like a curated nursery. The wife and husband owners are experts, helpful, and professional. The staff is helpful in every way. Katherine also does a great deal of speaking on garden topics and has a special talent with succulents...which sort of terrify me. What I appreciate most is the way plants are selected with such knowledge of growing needs, special qualities and a real sense of art. Chris is also a stone artist....his walls are walks are stunning. It is just a pleasure to walk around the nursery which is at their house and see their amazing gardens as well as the careful selection of plants and pots. If you live in Eastern Massachusetts and desire plants that are unusual and dramatic make a visit to Avant gardens. We discovered them about 12 years ago in a write-up in the Boston Globe, and on a sunny mid-May Saturday we drove down and were really impressed by their wonderful plant stock. Here you will find most everything that British gardener Christopher Lloyd grew in his stunning exotic garden at his home Great Dixter. Wonderful dahlias, cannas, little known varieties of coleus, along with some great unusual nicotianas, and intense salvias. The selection of hostas is equally great and their is a small but once again highly interesting variety of trees and shrubs, including one of my favorites, an upright plum-colored European beech called 'Red Obelisk.' The owners take their business seriously, and I have a few times bought so much that I almost felt guilty of taking their carefully tended youngsters. read more

Pretty cool nursery. Some of the prices are a little high, but their plants are unusual, they are well-tended and sometimes a little bigger than the average nursery's, so the prices are justified. Really cool planters and outdoor decor. This is a really fun nursery to go to, because it's not a long drive to get to, but it feels like it's in the middle of nowhere - a really pretty, rural setting. They have a cool website too, and you should check it out to browse before you go. Sometimes, they have crop failures, or they sell-out of a plant - usually they will post this on their website so you don't have to be disappointed when you show up. read more

Avant Gardens is a wonderful place. It's a trek from Boston but so worth it! I have many specimens from this nursery, as well as gorgeous pots and have been given valuable advice by very helpful, knowledgeable staff. It's a beautiful, peaceful environment and one can see much of what is sold planted in their personal gardens. It is treasure! read more

I am from Dartmouth, never had I gone to Avant Gardens. I finally made it this year, I was looking to add to my Helleborus collection. Avant- hosted an open house to which I took the opportunity to visit and add to my collection. I purchased 5 helleborus and 5 succulents. I would say the middle of April I noticed one of the helleborus not doing so well as all my other plants. I called spoke to a female explained to her I had purchased 5 helleborus and one was not doing as well as the others. I asked if I could get a replacement for it. She said they could not do that. Again I repeated myself stating I had purchased 5 and only one was not doing well. She apologized and said she could not replace it. I wanted to share my experience and opinion regarding "big box stores garden center" honors a 1 year guarantee, and catalog/online orders also will stand by their product. Unfortunately, for a known 5 star local business they do not stand by their product. I have enjoyed taking my business to online purchases, it's no wonder why local business are going out of business. read more
