I believed I needed a facial so I decided to try my first ever and at this location. My student Karol was excellent. I was first asked to choose between two scents as aromatherapy for the curtained section of the dark room. Then to change down to the waist with a Velcro towel. Then got under the bed covers. A little massage of the head. Wrapped the hair. Prepped the face for eval. Washed my feet. Instructor is retrieved to consult on next steps. Oh, my face was hydrated! Lots more occurred including unexpected massages of the feet and arms while masking and steaming face, etc. My face was soft and a little glowy. Wonderful experience! I would recommend. I was able to use my 20 percent birthday discount on the $40 facial. However about 3 hrs later, my face became bumpy again and don't know why. read more

I visit Aveda regularly to get my hair colored. Recently they started charging extra to get a toner with highlights which doesn't make any sense, nor is it listed on the price page. Usually the job done is ok and if there are issues they are willing to fix it. The price isn't bad. I would avoid coming here for a one time nail service. Some of the students do a good job but it's hard to find one like that, if you rebook with them, they can still stick you with another student. I would stick to haircuts, colors, blow outs or the facials. read more

Let me start off by saying I understand that this is a school, and not a professional salon. I've been here multiple times to get a simple haircut- I always just get a trim and some face framing pieces. I have never had a problem with my haircuts there until today. I just asked for a trim (about 2 inches off) and that was fine. When my hair was dry, she asked an instructor to come over because she didn't know how to do face framing pieces. She seemed completely clueless and the instructor hoax to show her everything. My stomach sank a little when she asked how to do this. I was hopeful and decided to trust the process, but honestly, it ended up Turing out looking like a half bowl haircut, with long chunks in the back. It was not blended at all and looked extremely shaggy. It looked like she tried to do a bob and then gave up halfway through and left the rest long. The instructor didn't even come and check when she was done cutting the face framing pieces. Long story short, I ended up crying all the way home, and will never come back here again. Looks like I'm going to have to wear my hair slicked back in a ponytail for a while... read more

I love getting my hair cut at Aveda Fredric's Institute. You can't beat the price: $24 for a shampoo, cut and blow dry. And best of all: Tipping is forbidden! This is a school, and these are students learning their craft, so tipping is not allowed, which is fine by me. In lieu of a tip, though, I have been known to tell the teachers that the person who cut my hair did a good job. So hopefully, that counts for something! I've never had a bad haircut here. Granted, I'm very simple with my hair requests: I usually only visit for a trim. But my trims have always been precise, and I always leave feeling refreshed and smelling amazing. Aveda products are some of my favorite. Haircuts are scheduled for an hour because the student needs to have each part of the process checked before proceeding. But this most recent haircut visit, I was in and out in less than 45 minutes. I guess it pays to have easy hair! At this Aveda school, you can also get manicures, pedicures, massages, facials and waxing. I've recieved pedicures here on two different occasions, and both have been super relaxing. The pedicure usually takes longer than your typical pedicure (about an hour) because, again, the student needs to get the pedicure checked by an instructor. I usually bring my laptop with me for pedicures, so I can relax and also work at the same time. The grussle don't stop. Even if you don't visit this Aveda for a service, you can stop in and shop for Aveda products. They have a lot of things! I'll usually stock up on my favorites twice a year or so. read more

I booked a 60 minute facial on a Tuesday afternoon and was surprised at how packed the facility was! After checking in at the front desk, Nadia greeted me and asked me questions regarding my overall health and skin concerns. After reviewing my questionnaire with her instructor, I was moved into the darkened ~spa~ room where the facials and massages are done. I was given a robe to change into and was ready for my facial! Nadia did a great job at being gentle with my skin but also made purposeful movements while massaging my face/neck area. About halfway through the facial, the instructor approved Nadia's personalized plan for the rest of my facial. I am definitely coming here again because I love the idea of helping future estheticians perfect their skills. I've always been a big fan of visiting the Aveda school for haircuts and massages. Selfishly, I was a little bummed that I moved further north since I drive from downtown for my appointments but I was glad to see they were still open in Indianapolis. I recently visited for a massage and haircut and had a great experience. I was able to book both back to back and make my way from one appointment to the next. Note that you want to leave extra time for these appointments versus a regular appointment and given the educational elements for the students and teachers. The only thing the new location is missing is the book beautiful old Turkish bath looking room in which all the hair washing took place at the previous location- it reminded me of a relaxing hammam. I'm hoping to visit in the next few weeks to try one of their facials. The prices are truly hard to beat and I love the product line. I've been here a few times (Jasmini cut my hair last week--she gets 5 stars!) and more times than not I have had a good experience. Things to know if you go: 1. It is students at all stages in their learning cutting your hair! Some might take two hours for a haircut, others may be at the end of their program and are at the same level as any other salon you might use. 2. It's all Aveda products--what's not to love about that? Be careful because you are going to want to buy something at the end, and it'll probably cost you an arm and a leg (seriously--Aveda is pricey). 3. Plan on being there for a while--budget lots of time! This is not an "in and out" situation. 4. I would recommend really knowing what you want--students are still building their confidence and if you ask them "What do you think" that is extra overwhelming. Know your basics--length, layers, face framing preference. While I miss the old location--it is much easier to get in and out of the Carmel location. read more

This was my first time at this new location. I came for a trim, wash, conditioning treatment and style + to visit the blue room for my shampoo nap! They let you lay down while they wash your hair :) The staff was friendly and they run a tight ship. Everyone was instructed to check in and then wait in a hallway seating area where the stylists would come to call ur name. My stylist was exceptional and 20 yrs old! She handled my curly hair with ease and was professional throughout. The salon was very clean and the new blue room was almost as good as the last one. I just miss the dome from the last location. I didn't realize that the Institute moved to a new location. I had been going to the Castleton location for student haircuts for years. The new location is not as impressive visually, but the haircuts are still good. A student does the work, but consults with an instructor several times during the process to make sure it's done right. Wash/dry is still included, but I think the back massage and mini facial were nixed due to the pandemic (I hope they return soon as they are very relaxing). They also improved their website and added an online scheduling system which makes getting an appointment much more convenient. read more

Long but detailed review. (I will not be giving names because that is always changing) Walking in, it does NOT have a feeling of walking into a school. The front desk is professional, offering all types of products, and they even ask if you need a drink while waiting. Before every appointment you will be asked to sign a waiver having you recognize that you are working with students. The wait to be seen is no longer than waiting for a "normal "appointment. The student will come out to you asking you different things about your skin type just like a normal spa service would ask of you. I have been a couple of times so I feel that my review is well rounded. I have only received waxing services. I noticed there was no review for this process so I wanted to do that for others! You need to have a lot of patience and a lot of grace when receiving this service. Not only are you working with students but they take their time, get help from instructors, or other students that have been there longer. I got a bikini wax and under arm wax and it took over two and a half hours from start to finish. My first experience was good but not great. It seemed to be a messy process (wax everywhere, floors and my legs, when finished) the instructor only checked twice, and I could tell I was the students first time bikini wax. The student that had been in the process longer was great about information during the service and handled my pain management better. Once the service was done, I was left in the whole room and I had to figure out that the student was waiting for me outside. (No big deal but a point to make) My second time for just my under arm was a night and day difference. I got a student who was FULL of knowledge and information as if I was at an actual spa. She gave me tips on how to care for my skin once I was home and gave me tips on how long I can wait to come back. she even offered a recovery serum for my skin that my first set of students did not offer! She walked me out all the way to check out. She was awesome! I will be booking with her until she graduates! The reason for 4 stars and not five is because of the lack of care from the instructors. I don't know what the protocol is and how they are to help the students, but I felt like I was fishing for information on how to care for myself and when to come back, with my first visit. Now after my second visit, I'm going to assume that it's the students job to fill me in on all of these details and to take care of my until I check out. All in all, for the price and the products that are used it's 100% worth it! You are supporting students that are eager to learn and get better. I have told people my bikini line was SO CLEANED UP. I came in to Aveda for a consult regarding a perm. Growing up, I would always get my hair done at beauty schools and love the idea of being used to help students develop their craft. Perms are hard to find in Indy, so I was already sold on getting it done here. The woman who set me up for a consult seemed bothered that I was there, but she set me up quickly to meet with an instructor. At first, the instructor was nice but the visit turned when she told me that they don't recommend perms on colored hair. I understand fully her reasoning, but I told her my hair color was 100% natural. She clearly didn't believe and double checked, then triple checked, pointing out my [natural] gradient and highlights. I didn't mind her asking as much as I minded the complete condescension in her voice. We proceeded with the consult, where I felt like she wasn't clearly listening to me and what I wanted. I showed her a photo for reference, and as she explained what the perm would look like, it absolutely sounded like she was trying to talk me out of it. She even kept telling me how many hours it could take (duh, it's a perm), even though I made it clear I have all the time in the world. I really felt like this woman didn't want me to get a perm done there. I did like that she brought out the larger rollers I was interested in, but then she said she didn't think they had enough. (Haha what? Not enough for one head?) I asked what kind of solution they used, as I've heard from others in the industry newer perms are now healthier (yay!). She told me because they're a school, they use the cheap stuff (strong sales technique) and all perms are damaging. There was zero option to pay for an upgrade for any of the healthier perms out there (which I would gladly pay for), and she clearly had no knowledge about what those would be anyway. She asked a couple of more times if my hair is dyed (enough already--it's not!!), then said before my perm, I'd need to book another consult and bring reference photos. That ended the experience for me. I already told her several times my hair wasn't dyed, I was already there for a consult, and I already brought a reference photo. There was no need for an additional consult. Period. I walked in there convinced I'd get the perm done here, and after the consult was convinced I'd never come back for any kind of service. read more
