I didn't realize that the Institute moved to a new location. I had been going to the Castleton location for student haircuts for years. The new location is not as impressive visually, but the haircuts are still good. A student does the work, but consults with an instructor several times during the process to make sure it's done right. Wash/dry is still included, but I think the back massage and mini facial were nixed due to the pandemic (I hope they return soon as they are very relaxing). They also improved their website and added an online scheduling system which makes getting an appointment much more convenient. read more

Long but detailed review. (I will not be giving names because that is always changing) Walking in, it does NOT have a feeling of walking into a school. The front desk is professional, offering all types of products, and they even ask if you need a drink while waiting. Before every appointment you will be asked to sign a waiver having you recognize that you are working with students. The wait to be seen is no longer than waiting for a "normal "appointment. The student will come out to you asking you different things about your skin type just like a normal spa service would ask of you. I have been a couple of times so I feel that my review is well rounded. I have only received waxing services. I noticed there was no review for this process so I wanted to do that for others! You need to have a lot of patience and a lot of grace when receiving this service. Not only are you working with students but they take their time, get help from instructors, or other students that have been there longer. I got a bikini wax and under arm wax and it took over two and a half hours from start to finish. My first experience was good but not great. It seemed to be a messy process (wax everywhere, floors and my legs, when finished) the instructor only checked twice, and I could tell I was the students first time bikini wax. The student that had been in the process longer was great about information during the service and handled my pain management better. Once the service was done, I was left in the whole room and I had to figure out that the student was waiting for me outside. (No big deal but a point to make) My second time for just my under arm was a night and day difference. I got a student who was FULL of knowledge and information as if I was at an actual spa. She gave me tips on how to care for my skin once I was home and gave me tips on how long I can wait to come back. she even offered a recovery serum for my skin that my first set of students did not offer! She walked me out all the way to check out. She was awesome! I will be booking with her until she graduates! The reason for 4 stars and not five is because of the lack of care from the instructors. I don't know what the protocol is and how they are to help the students, but I felt like I was fishing for information on how to care for myself and when to come back, with my first visit. Now after my second visit, I'm going to assume that it's the students job to fill me in on all of these details and to take care of my until I check out. All in all, for the price and the products that are used it's 100% worth it! You are supporting students that are eager to learn and get better. I have told people my bikini line was SO CLEANED UP. I came in to Aveda for a consult regarding a perm. Growing up, I would always get my hair done at beauty schools and love the idea of being used to help students develop their craft. Perms are hard to find in Indy, so I was already sold on getting it done here. The woman who set me up for a consult seemed bothered that I was there, but she set me up quickly to meet with an instructor. At first, the instructor was nice but the visit turned when she told me that they don't recommend perms on colored hair. I understand fully her reasoning, but I told her my hair color was 100% natural. She clearly didn't believe and double checked, then triple checked, pointing out my [natural] gradient and highlights. I didn't mind her asking as much as I minded the complete condescension in her voice. We proceeded with the consult, where I felt like she wasn't clearly listening to me and what I wanted. I showed her a photo for reference, and as she explained what the perm would look like, it absolutely sounded like she was trying to talk me out of it. She even kept telling me how many hours it could take (duh, it's a perm), even though I made it clear I have all the time in the world. I really felt like this woman didn't want me to get a perm done there. I did like that she brought out the larger rollers I was interested in, but then she said she didn't think they had enough. (Haha what? Not enough for one head?) I asked what kind of solution they used, as I've heard from others in the industry newer perms are now healthier (yay!). She told me because they're a school, they use the cheap stuff (strong sales technique) and all perms are damaging. There was zero option to pay for an upgrade for any of the healthier perms out there (which I would gladly pay for), and she clearly had no knowledge about what those would be anyway. She asked a couple of more times if my hair is dyed (enough already--it's not!!), then said before my perm, I'd need to book another consult and bring reference photos. That ended the experience for me. I already told her several times my hair wasn't dyed, I was already there for a consult, and I already brought a reference photo. There was no need for an additional consult. Period. I walked in there convinced I'd get the perm done here, and after the consult was convinced I'd never come back for any kind of service. read more

My student stylist was very sweet and she did a nice job on a partial highlight. My concern is with the lack of involvement with instructors during my appointment- I was there for 4.5 HOURS and I left with a very bad haircut. An instructor did a 3 min consult on color once at the beginning of my appointment and NEVER checked back in. I asked for a 1in. trim and after visiting a different salon to correct the bad cut, I lost 4+ in. in length...Students need practice- not upset with the student at all... 1) If you have concerns, stop them- ask questions- ask for instructors to assist...they will not come to you pro-actively to check in 2) if you are unhappy they will schedule correction with another student- I asked to speak with an instructor and they only offered IF I scheduled a correction appointment- no thanks 3) if techniques seem very different than your past experiences (EX: using a razor a LOT) don't hesitate to speak up / share concerns / ask for options... read more

This was my first time visiting the new location. I had been for various services at the Castleton location and had fairly good experiences. I booked a Brazilian wax here last week. I was greeted right away and did not have to wait very long for my students to pick me up. I was a little surprised that there were 2 going to be performing the wax, but I was ok with that. Here's what I loved: The waxing is done in the spa area, so it's private, dimly lit, and very quiet. My least favorite part about waxing is having to hold conversations through the entire thing. I loved the spa atmosphere. It was a little more painful than usual, mostly because the girls are still learning. They realized and changed the type of wax and that helped. Overall, I will be receiving this service here from now on - and the price is unbeatable! read more

If you're looking to get your hair cut and don't want to pay the ever so steep prices, Aveda is the place to go! I got a trim & style and added a hair mask! I was greeted by friendly faces when I walked in the door. I scheduled my appointment lent on their website and had little wait time when I arrived. I would recommend scheduling a bit in advance to get the time slot you desire. The hair wash, mini facial and hair mask were wonderful. A hair cut and style for under $20? Definitely peaked my interest. You have to remember, they are students and some have been training for longer than others. I went in for an appointment with a certain stylist whom I know personally. I booked online with her, and when I checked in I said I had an appointment with her. Come to find out, I was rescheduled with someone else. The front desk did not inform me when I checked in. When I stated that I left work 2.5 hours early for a my service, the Woman at the desk said, "We don't need to hear about that." And then offered to reschedule me. I declined. read more

I've followed them from Castleton to Carmel. There's a huge difference in quality. I agree that the instructors spend more time talking among themselves than walking around "offering" their help. Also, I don't know if the students do most of their schooling online, but the level of knowledge I've experienced is below, the students that graduated from the Carleton location. This was my first time at Aveda getting my hair done and I have to say I was amazed. Josephine Nitschke did a partial teasy highlight with a blended in money piece and I could not be happier with how it turned out. She made waiting in the salon not feel like it took all day! She is outgoing, spunky, and so sweet. Forming conversations with her was not difficult at all. She always wants to make sure she is giving her client what they want, and she always double checks with educators before moving onto the next step. She is a very driven young lady, and Aveda is very lucky to have her. Prices were amazing, and so was the service. Could not be happier with my hair and with Josephine.
