Arahim did an excellent job on my hair. I was a little nervous having a student trim and color my hair, but knowing that she is in the "master" level gave me a little peace of mind. PLUS...being a nurse I understand the need to practice the skills that we are taught in school and the need to "practice". Plus, I knew my hair would grow back and the instructors would be around. Arahim did a really impressive job on my hair color and especially my trim. I have curly hair and learned that I have a natural "shape" which I never knew, but was able to see the next day! My color was just a touch up on my greys (I am at the stage in my life ) and enhanced the color on my ends (it's ombré). It looked refreshed and I never realized how much of a difference it would make (I'm not big on chemicals so don't get my hair colored often) in my look (aka younger ). I LOVE what Aveda has to offer because I'm all about natural products and absolutely LOVE their students! I am soooo sad they are shutting down their Tallahassee location because I truly believe in their mission. Also...I've read some bad reviews, but I take reviews like that with a grain of salt. 1. So I had good and bad experience here. I think my bad experience was working with a junior which when I was asking questions, she couldn't really answer them but that is fine and expected for somebody who is just learning their craft. My really good experience here was getting my hair dyed. I got partial copper highlights and the Lady was a senior student and did a phenomenal job. I'm very pleased with the results and she was also very knowledgeable to answer my questions. When I was there, they had complementary beverages. I can't say enough good things about this place. The students are all so hospitable and great at what they do, especially to still be learning their craft. I highly recommend the massage services. You cannot go wrong with a 60 or 90 minute massage, facial or back facial. Yes, you read that right. They also cost less than say your Massage Envy, and having patronized them I definitely prefer Aveda Institute. Mani and pedis can be hit or miss and make sure you are not in a hurry. I find those doing nail services tend to be perfectionist and take their times so they don't miss any steps (again, learning.) I just love this place. I mean where else can you get a 90min massage for less than $50. The price is low as you are receiving your service by a student. I was quite a regular prior of COVID and than never was able to get back. While you have to consider making an appointment 4+ weeks in advance it's for sure worth it. The students are wonderful and so far I have not had anyone who has not absolutely tried their best to accommodate what you need. With everything in life you just have to communicate. I need more of a deep tissue massage and am sure and so far have not been disappointed. I can recommend the facials as wells, but the pedicure not so much. read more

This place is laughable and so are the reviews. I LOVE IT. Went in for spa services as part of a bet. (I lost). So the massage was fine. Even though as I type I can feel my shoulders locking back up. Manicure and pedicure was decent but no way I'm moving from my cycle of regulars. What sucked about the place? The people performing the services! You can teach students a skill but teach them customer service and decency. I don't normally like to be touched. SO If I'm going to pay you to invade my personal space you shouldn't smell like a pay by the hour hotel. On top of that you bolted out almost immediately to go outside and take a smoke right in front of the building. I'm a big sports fan. Me and Jesus are cool but He knows I cuss. BLACK PEOPLE DONT GO. My close friend went there and they did not know how to wash, trim, or silk press African American hair. They cut her hair uneven while wet and didn't even wash hair hair properly. When I mean wash her hair properly I'm saying scrub her scalp. They attempted to flat iron her hair while wet leaving it DAMAGED. My friend tried to give it a chance but once she realized they were damaging her hair she immediately left. generally pretty disappointing experience here. when i scheduled my appointment i was quoted "about 60$" then come to get my hair done and get told it'll be at least $160 minimum. whatever i needed my hair done, i asked for a warm caramel-y brown and gave reference photos to my natural color, left 4.5 hours later with almost black very dark brown hair that was all over my face ( so much so i had to shave my forehead bc the hairs on my face were dyed brown) next day i call and ask if a refund would be possible and was assured that it would get approved since i didn't get the color i wanted. cool! but no, i come in and i can't have a refund, boo! sadness ensues. they do offer a touch up session but like?? i don't really want to go back if it can't be done right in the first place? i would be more understanding if the student stylist didn't have their instructor hovering over us the entire night. if i can't have a refund at least get everyone who is answering phones and working in the salon on the same page. sad to leave this review after so many friends recommended coming here :( read more

I LOVED MY EXPERIENCE!!!!!! Kylah was AMAZING!!!!!!! Let me just say that today I was looking for a place to get a facial and forgot that I had a $20 gift card for any service at AVEDA. So on a journey to a facial oasis was in my view. So I called before I went to make sure they had an available appointment and was able to get a 1:30 appointment with Kylah. When I arrived I checked in and was given a glass of water and only waited about 2 minutes before Kylah came and walked me to the back to the Spa. The Spa area was lit dimly with soft music playing in the background. Once Kylah escorted me to the back I was welcomed to a bench where a small bowl of warm soapy water awaited me and I was given a foot bath. Once she finished my foot bath there were a cute pair of black slippers waiting so she dried both of my feet and then led me into the Spa area where she would be doing my facial. Before we got started she asked my questions about my daily skincare, what products I use or had been using. She also asked me about problem areas and if there were any areas of concern about my skin that I wanted to pay more attention. She was very attentive and was able to give a recommendation on what facial services that she would be doing for me in my 60 minute facial time. Through the time of my facial Kylah was very delicate and made sure that I was comfortable. She also, before applying the product to my face she made sure to tell me very softly what she was applying and how it benefited my skin. Once she was finished she allowed me to continue to zone out and enjoy the remaining of the facial. I have to say that I absolutely loved that fact that while my face was steaming during some of the product applications or mask that part of the services was that you had an option to hand massages or foot massage if not both. This made the experience very calming and relaxing because it was almost as if you were getting a full body massage and care. I would highly recommend the 60 minute facial outside of the 30 minute facial if you have time because you are able to focus on the areas of the skin as well as have a hour to just relax and be pampered without being rushed. Once my facial was complete her instructor came by to introduce herself as well as tell you the products that Kylah recommended based on what she noticed about your skin. The instructor was very nice and was appreciate of all of the feedback from the experience that I had. Kylah definitely had my face feeling and looking so smooth and I left with such a glow that I couldn't believe that it was even my skin. My face looked so moisturized and healthy and I can't wait to come back and have this experience again. Before leaving Kylah showed me the products that she used that I could take home as well as asked if I had any other questions. Before leaving I scheduled an appointment to come back and have her follow up on my skin to make sure that I keep my glow. I went to aveda several times over a span of 3-4 years for haircuts and highlights/foils and I had a few great experiences where I walked out feeling and looking great. I don't know if the quality of students or teaching has declined more recently but my last time there was so awful that I am coming back about 5 months later to leave this review because my hair has still not recovered. I asked for highlights and a long layered haircut and walked out with hair darker than it was was when I arrived because she left the toner in for far too long and a haircut so awful and uneven that I still hate the way it looks even though its grown out a lot. the worst part is I was completely gaslit by the educators who did their best to even it out after the stylist butchered it, said it looked great and at least was healthier now that it was so short. They gave me a 50% discount but I am still regretting going there and will never return its just not a gamble I am willing to take again and would advise others dont either. read more

Went for a blonde retouch and the girl didn't listen to what I was asking for and turned my hair orange. When I asked her to fix the orange the instructor came and just put blue shampoo on it. It was still very orange. Worst decision I have ever made to come here. Left crying and came straight home and box dyed my hair back to brown, because they ruined a year's worth of blonding. I took my 8 year old there for an appointment for a haircut and they wouldn't allow me in the building with her. They said I had to wait outside or in my car. A) As a parent that does not seem safe, because they are not licensed childcare providers. B) If a child was to be dropped off, there should be paperwork to be signed to allow such things. C) It's 90 degrees out and no one is going to wait outside. D) They should inform people when they are making the appointment that this would be the case. E) There's a perfectly good hair salon called Topper's in the same complex that does allow parents to go in with their small children and still practices safety measures for COVID-19. I would have rather given zero stars, however that wasn't an option. I went in got highlights and a trim, instead left with something more like a 1970s Elvis Presley. I had pictures, for the student and I structure, however, never once saw the I structure during the hack job. Student(barber) didn't ask how the cut looked or if I liked it, just said all done! I complained at the desk whe I waited 45 minutes for my daughter to also have a screwed up cut. Still, none of the "instructors " found time to reach out of offer to correct my cut. Given I usually just get a trim and a simple style, my hair always looks the way I want it too. I've also added on the deep condition treatment to my haircut twice and it really does make your hair feel softer and healthier! The massage and facial are so relaxing and worth the price! I went here for a pedicure and was very impressed for the price ($15 for the basic pedi). The pedicure lasted about an hour and they use multiple scrubs, moisturizers, and a toner. I was seen by Shanta R, and she talked me through the whole process and gave recommendations for my skin and nails. She was nice, personable, and knowledgable, but didn't talk my ear off. You get to keep the nail polish that you pick out! However, they did not have a very big color selection, which is my only complaint. I really love Aveda. First of all, for the low price of $12 for a simple cut and style, you get the great Aveda products used on your hair, plus a great cut. I've never once had a problem here. My hair has always turned out cute. As another reviewer mentioned, they do give you a basket with the products at the end of the appointment, but you don't have to buy anything. I've also had a facial and a body treatment here. The facial was fabulous and only $30. However, the body treatment was $50 and for that much I'd go to Better Living Day Spa or something like that. read more

Your experience here really depends on what side of the salon they send you to. Each time I've been to Aveda (except once), I was sent to the left side of the salon. It looks like the cheap side, but in fact the students who have been there longer are on that side. I have always been very happy with my haircut there. They listen, they have been creative and for the most part they are pretty professional. No complaints. I went to the masters store once that was right next to it and was also very pleased with my visit. Mind you, I do not have long layered hair and I do not ask for "common." haircuts. I like asking them to do their thing and be pleasantly surprised to a cut that I may not have known what it would look like on me. I get bored with my hair very easily if it says the same. Once I was sent the right side (next to the windows) and it was hell on earth. The girl had never cut short hair before. they teach round cuts in the 3rd or 4th week and this girl was week 1!!!! Why the HELL would they have me sit through a cut with her holding the clippers? So the girl's supervisor comes over and basically does the cut for her. I mean the girl tries but she is terrified to do ANYTHING to me. To be honest I was scared too. And the supervisor... the job she did was subpar. I came out looking very butch. What really ticked me off what that the supervisor was very fat and she was pressing herself against me and the chair, I felt VERY uncomfortable. That and she didn't listen to me at all in the beginning. I kept hoping she would fix it, make it less bulldyke, but she never did. I would like to note that this woman's own haircut made her look awful and seemed to me to be not very professional. Why don't they warn you that the right side of the salon can only do trims and easy cuts like long with layers???!! Now I always ask what side the person I'm being set up with sits on. I have never been so disappointed after getting my hair done. My appointment was at 8:30am. I was there for 8 HOURS!!!!!! Wasted my whole day. The student took forever to color my hair. She asked me if I wanted a "money piece" which I've had several times in the past and loved it, so I said yes. BIG MISTAKE! I had a haircut too, which I wanted to my shoulders. I told her my part was to the side, but she still parted it in the middle when doing the cut. When she turned me to look at the mirror at the end result, I was in total shock. The style she gave me made me look like I was an actress from Hairspray!!!!! It was such an outdated hairstyle! I instantly asked for it to be restyled. I was frustrated, but glad it looked better. I left and was outside for an hour. My hair was completely flat and I noticed all the mistakes! My cut is uneven! One side is longer than the other! The "money piece" are two large chunks of almost white hair framing my face. It doesn't match the rest of my hair at all! She spent hours coloring my hair, but I don't notice a difference with the rest of my hair. Just the chunks. My hair looks absolutely terrible. Im so insecure to walk around in public now. Both massage therapies were personable and receptive. Aromatherapy was included so that helped ramp up the relaxation. Never have I read the reviews for somewhere on Yelp and gotten frustrated until reading the ones for this Aveda Institute. I read a lot of people writing about their experience and complaining about the service they received or how long it took... but do they not realize that Aveda is a school and these students are still practicing what their going to school for? They haven't received their licenses yet and are obviously not always going to be perfect. Aveda is far cheaper than any other salon in Tallahassee and that is because of the fact that they are STUDENTS. When you come to Aveda you're basically paying $30 for a service that would cost $100 plus at another salon. If you expect to get the exact same results from a student as you would from a licensed and highly experienced stylist or esthetician then you probably shouldn't go to Aveda Institute. I used to go to Aveda when I lived in south Florida and have been coming to the Tallahassee Aveda institute since I moved here about 5 years ago. I've come here regularly for haircuts and have also received hair color treatments, massages, and makeup applications. Some visits I've been more satisfied with my services than others, but I've never left disappointed. This salon is clean and smells amazing the moment you walk through the door. The receptionists are always friendly and offer you water or tea (I'm personally a big fan of their tea and always look forward to it). The wait has never been an issue for me I'm usually taken back within 5 mins or so. If you're getting a haircut the stylist will sit you down and ask you to explain your hair type and how you want it cut and styled. After you've told them or shown them a picture of what you want, they have their instructor check what they have written down and plan on doing. I always love all the products they use on my hair, whenever I leave my hair feels and smells so nice. When they are finished with the service they have the instructor come check their work and touch up anything if needed. Once done they walk you to the front, show you which products they used on you and bring you to the register to check out. Obviously it's part of their job to show you the products, but I've never experienced them being pushy about buying anything. Overall, I had a good experience. My one complaint is that my initial appointment was scheduled for a Wednesday at 11. They called Wed. @ 10 and said that a stylist was unavailable during that time because of an event, so they moved my appointment to Friday at 3:45. On Friday around 3, I got asked if I could come in at 4:30 instead. The back and forth about scheduling was a bit frustrating, but I do understand that these are students who have other things they have to do, and they make take longer on clients than an experienced hairdresser. I got a simple haircut (6 inches off and a few layers), and it came out looking really nice. The student checked in with the instructor throughout the haircut and the instructor came in a fixed any uneven parts. The student was very personable and friendly. I would recommend coming here if you would like a cheap haircut and have some time to spare and the ability to be flexible. My appointment was pushed back an hour I showed up 30 minutes before my rescheduled appointment and wasn't seen till 30 minutes after therefore my stylist was not allowed to do what we had scheduled. When the instructor came over to check it she continued to cut more off even though I made it very clear i did not want any more cut off. I went for the facial special this month when it started and had the worse experience. I have gone to the school several times and have had great experiences, I'd even recommend my friends going. But this last time was ridiculous. The clinician, who was a student, was not prepared for the session and left for twenty minutes to go get "her things" and left me alone in the room. My hour facial turned into a half hour after she got back and set everything back up. She also came into the room as I was getting dressed rather than first asking if I was ready, which they normally do, making me feel extremely uncomfortable as she was giggling with her friends outside the curtain. At the end of the facial session I was expecting to talk to an instructor, since I hadn't talked to one during the process and there was no one to be found. The girl also walked me up to the desk and stood there until I paid and made me feel uncomfortable saying anything with her watching me. I have gotten two haircuts here at the master level and an eye brow wax. I love the Aveda Institute although services are performed by students; I never had a bad experience. I have heard of some bad experiences which is why I give it 3 stars. My roommate's haircut took over 2 hours and was horrible (she did not do it with a master). I think it makes a world of a difference to book an appointment and make it early. The price is great compared to South Florida prices on haircuts. I've gotten my hair done at Aveda twice. The first time I was absolutely in love!! I went for the $12 trim/wash/dry. My stylist was nice, competent and really listened to me. Afterwards, my hair was softer and shinier than I had ever seen it. The second time, I went for a simple cut. This time I had a white stylist (I'm Black, so was my first stylist) and she seemed at a loss as to what to do with my hair. Call me crazy, but I thought they teach you how to work with every hair type? I asked for bangs and a trim. My trim was all kinds of uneven! I ended up coming back to have an instructor fix my cut, and even then I was less than pleased. I've made a third appointment for later this week, and I made sure I requested my original stylist. Tried their student services for a simple cut and style. I called a day in advance to make a reservation and when I arrived, filled out my information and signed to agree that I understood that it was student services. The student was friendly, not too chatty, was careful and did a great job and at the same time it didn't take very long. One of the very qualified instructors was on the floor and was quite involved. It depends on the student's confidence and if they have questions as to how involved the instructor will be but at the very end, they have to have the instructor come for the final check. And ask if you're happy with the cut. The $12 before tip included shampoo, cut and blow-dry styling with product. When the student walks the customer to the cashier, they will bring you to their product line and add whatever product they happened to use for you. Of course you don't need to actually buy it. The decor lives up to the Aveda name with track lighting and silver metallic stations. It doesn't feel like you're getting your hair cut in a "classroom". Most of the other customers there at the time were women, many of them getting their hair coloured. The place is at the end of the shopping strip on the corner of Pensacola and Ocala. read more

I come in and I want to get my haircut and I have to bring my three-year-old with me because you know what, there's always somebody available to watch a child. Big deal I need to get my haircut. But apparently they don't allow children there. So they will never again see my face. Students at the New Spa are definately trained well and go above and beyond to make you feel special and taken care of. Its more of a health wellness, than a place for "pampering." They educate you on your skin, how to treat it, and why you are having such issues. It's not just a facial. They use aromatic steam towels, Massage your hand,feet, upper body and scalp, Give you a "sensory journey", (ps if you have never had one,...go get one!) I just had the worst haircut experience in my life, I'm not going to name the student who did it, but I would like to make this known that they need more practice before cutting hair on real people. She was a very nice girl but I knew things were going to start going downhill as soon as she started washing my hair, and accidentally used conditioner first thinking it was the shampoo‍. From there, I knew I should have requested to have another hairdresser, but I allowed her to continue. She didn't section my hair to either cut or blow dry it which I thought was odd. Going into the cut, she asked me if cutting the length of one inch was enough and showed me, I said yes but no more than that. I had to stand up the entire time she cut my hair which was really alarming to me. Again, for the blow drying it took a long time because my hair wasn't sectioned out into smaller pieces. As she was blowdrying I looked down at the floor at my fallen cut hair pieces and noticed they were much longer than I anticipated, about 2 inch strands on the ground!! (All of different lengths from 1-2inches) For styling, she used a straightener to make loose curls and I was faced away from the mirror the entire time of blowdrying and styling so I could not see the process until the end I was shown the results. One side of my hair was wayy longer than the other. The supervisor walked by and blamed it on the tightness of the curls which whatever I assumed to be true. I get home, brush out this hairstyle and pull the ends of my hair to compare, and one side of my head is literally an inch longer than the other side. I have never cried over a haircut until today and am tempted to use my own scissors to fix this catastrophe. The students need more training and should be more professional when dealing with beloved hair. read more
