4 barber chairs. Appointment only. My husband was able to get in within minutes after another client left as a walk-up and because there was a gap between customer. It's after noon. The apprentice barber engaged my husband in conversation, immediately. He is cool. Too bad Chris wasn't able to cut my husband's hair, he seemed like the whiz with the clippers. Cutting hair seems to be second nature to him. It's like watching Edward Scissorhand, minus the death cut scissors and clients coming out alive after a cut. ;) The back bottom fade came out nicely. Might have been cool to get an etched out part to help define it more. Would have gotten the side front faded as well, but the cut had already taken about 45 minutes, still a good cut overall. The barber chairs are retro and vintage looking, they look quite sturdy too. All look true vintage except the brown one, that one looks to be nouveau retro. I really the dresser and marble countertop by the one barber chair when you first walk in. I don't mind watching the professionals cut my hubby's hair at all, so much faster than I could ever. All of the staff are quick to get folks in and out of here. My hubby got a handful of bad cuts during covid. It sounded like alternative music until I heard this cool song S' Anazito Sti Saloniki by Dimitris Mitrapanos, can't understand it, sounds Greek and cool either way. I can't rave enough about this barber shop. Having gotten used to a particular level of haircut from when I lived in a larger city, it was a tough search coming to Grand Rapids. I would put Avenue on par with, if not higher than, most cuts that I used to get in Boston. My haircuts take a little longer because of my type of hair, but it's well worth the extra time. Chris and Josh work with precision and use foil shavers to give the best fades in the area. I've had friends and random people compliment me and ask where I go for my haircuts. Prices are very fair and wait time isn't too bad if you go off peak hours. They also take online reservations for Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I recommend looking at least 2 weeks in advance if you want to schedule it. They also hired in a 3rd guy, so I'm assuming that will help with wait times as well. If you care about your hair and love precision cuts, definitely give Avenue a try. read more

Great man, better barber. This shop is for gentlemen who know what a good haircut should be. I hesitate to write this because I'll have to compete like a pup in a litter to mothers nipples to get a spot, but that would be delaying the inevitable and this shop deserves the praise. It's really daunting to find a new barber and entrusting them to make sure you don't look like a fool for 4-6 weeks. You can trust these dudes. Alex did a killer job. He took the time to make sure everything was the right length. Really friendly, great conversation. Star rating breakdown: five stars plus for barber Alex Dominguez; one star for Chris and his Avenue Barber Shop customer service. First the barber shop: very nice decor, hipster vibe, friendly atmosphere. Nevertheless, when I arrived twenty minutes early for my appointment before the shop was open, after a two and one half hour drive from Detroit, I could see that all the barbers were already in the shop. Through the window, I asked to use Avenue's restroom before my appointment and was told "no," through the window, because of COVID-19. I asked where I might find a public restroom. Chris started to explain; I indicated I could not hear him through the glass window, but he would not open the door so that I could hear his directions. So I followed his hand signals and walked up Division and finally found a homeless ministries that had restrooms. I stood in line for 15 minutes, inside, with one of the most at-risk populations for COVID-19. When I got back to the shop, I was now 10 minutes late for my appointment. I then walked through the shop, exposing Alex and everyone else to whatever airborne virus I had been exposed to at the ministries. I am 100% behind taking safety measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus. I don't want to get it, and I don't want to spread it. And I'm grateful that all of the barbers and customers wore face masks. But there is nothing in the State of Michigan COVID-19 guidelines to prohibit you from allowing your customers access to your restroom. And if you're trying to protect everyone from the virus, access to your restroom is the least risky activity in your shop. If you check the CDC guidelines and the websites for the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Hospitals, you will find that even though COVID-19 is overwhelmingly an airborne virus, it can survive on stainless steel door handles and faucet handles for up to 48 hours. The solution they all recommend: wash your hands for 20 seconds and spray a disinfectant on the handles and faucets touched by your customers. There are of course other surfaces in your shop much more likely to be touched by your customers than restroom door handles and faucets. First, all of your customers touch the outside and inside handles of your shop's entry door. In addition, all of your customers come in contact with the arm rests of your barber chairs. While there, I saw three barbers change customers, and not one of them disinfected the arm rests of their barber chairs. How many customers ask to use your restroom? One in ten? And how many touch the arm rests of your barber chairs? Ten in ten! It would be a far more effective way to protect your customers and yourselves to disinfect the arm rests of your chairs than to refuse access to your restroom. Now for the Five Star Plus rating for Alex. He is a superb barber! He was waiting for me outside as I returned and greeted me very warmly, even though Chris had turned my early arrival into a late one. And Alex started the appointment with what I consider to be the most crucial part: the consultation. He allowed all the time necessary for me to explain what I wanted for my hair and beard. I showed him photos, and he discussed what he thought would look best and how to achieve it. Only when he knew exactly what I wanted did he begin. Throughout the cut, he was personable and engaging, yet focused and concentrated when he was working to achieve exactly what we had discussed. He even worked well past the end of our appointment time until he was satisfied with the quality of his work. I cannot recommend him highly enough! read more

Real Talk: I've been looking for this kind of expertise from Holland,Kalamazoo and GR. Finally found it!!! You tell them or show them what you want and voila. Everything is on point. This is not a burn and turn barbershop. Each person is a canvas and they're artists. Patiently wait your turn. My first go was a 2 hour wait and I will never regret it. These dudes are good...
