We had a lovely evening at Avenue Bistro. It was a warm evening so we asked to sit out on the patio. We were the only customers on the patio so it was nice to relax and just enjoy the evening. We had a bottle of wine and shared a tomato mozarrela salad to start. It was very good. For entrees I had a special of the day - schnitzel with onion sauce and my husband had a pork dish in a mushroom sauce with noodles. My schnitzel was very good but my husband thought the pork in his dish was very dry. The service was good and it was a very enjoyable evening. read more

Always decent service but check your burgers! I understand that in some places, medium is the preferred doneness but not here. Husband and I loved to order and split 2 of the burgers (Chef burger and the blue one) but mine was pretty much raw. When we sent it back, they slapped it back on the grill again, put it back together and sent it back out. Four of us went to Avenue Bistro this evening, two as visitors to the area. We started with the mushroom calamari and the Avenue salad which were unique. The main dishes were exceptional. Three of us had schnitzel and the fourth had seafood tagliatelle all which were delicious. We ordered three desserts for the table. The homemade apple strudel with custard and ice cream was a hit! The service was exceptional with our waitress being very attentive and friendly. It turns out she was co-owner. It was extra special when the chef visited our table. We will happily visit this restaurant on our next visit to Comox. read more

Ok... avenue USED to be one of if not the best restaurant in the valley... But oh boy how times have changed! First let's start with the "chef" Mathias one of the most intolerable people I've ever seen work in a kitchen in my 25 years in the industry. Constantly yelling at his staff of which he pays close to minimum wage and expects Gordon Ramsey type of results. The ambiance in the building has gone so far down hill that it's super uncomfortable especially with the "chef" screaming and slamming things in the background making it almost impossible to enjoy your food. All in all avenue has completely gone down hill since the new owners and under absolutely NO circumstances would I EVER recommend this place to anyone! "Chef" Mathias should pull his head out of the cookbook he bought and try being a decent human being running a decent establishment for once. read more

Decided to go out for dinner at 5:30. Hoped we wouldn't need a reservation and when we got there we could see there was plenty of space. The owner was the hostess and was not very welcoming. She brusquely said to give her a minute to check things and proceeded to walk away. We watched as she went to talk to some guests that were seated, and then stroll behind the bar. There she seemed to be either cleaning or gathering some drinks. My wife and a I stood in the doorway for perhaps 5 minutes watching her and she continued to ignore us. Finally we left and had a great dinner at Boonies. Not sure why they did not want our business. If there was really no space the owner/hostess could have had the decency to come and tell us. We are local professionals and will not be going back to this establishment. read more

Service was pleasant and competent. Ambience was okay, but lights could be dimmed a fraction so it feels less like a diner. Cocktail: a spritz consisting of tequila, aperol, and green chartreuse seemed like an adventurous choice, but it was downright incompatible. The mains: 1) Pork schnitzel 'forester style' (mushroom gravy) schnitzel served with red cabbage and spaetzle It was "meh." Spaetzle was overcooked and soggy. 2) Pork tenderloin from the fresh sheet with a "reduction" sauce had a very strange taste. The pork was overcooked, i.e. tough. Fail Dessert: Creme brulee cheesecake. Dry. Fancy ganache-style sauce was not fresh, in fact the dessert tasted a week old. At the prices they are asking, I hope they can do better. In previous visits, (years ago) they were A1. This is not the case anymore, at least in our experience. read more

Not anymore, the variety and freshness and vibe is gone, it is bland food and I feel for the overworked waitstaff. Unfortunate as it was a regular go to for a great night. Came for lunch, can't wait to come back for dessert! I had the Cobb salad with smoked salmon and goddess dressing. Large portion and just enough gogonzola cheese sprinkled on top. Green Goddess dressing lives up to its name. Service was just as heavenly. She was timely, right there when we needed a top up of coffee or water and patient as we were a large group of women with various dietary restrictions. I observed the owner keeping an eye on everything, being friendly and greeting customers. A very well run place, with courteous staff and consistently delicious food! We came for Oktoberfest, expecting that the new owner would impress. I have had lots of German food and I have to say this was far from memorable. Little to no seasoning on the schnitzel and spaetzle, the pork chop was flavourless and there was a skin on the soup from sitting too long. We won't be back. read more

We visited this bistro in Comox BC. Have to say it is a small place well decorated to present a casual atmosphere. The server we had was excellent and knowledgeable. We ordered a house smoked brisket sandwich. We shared the brisket and had a seafood chowder on the side. The chowder wax excellent, creamy and thick with good seafood. The brisket sandwich was also tasty but very little actual brisket inside. The brisket was $19 the chowder was an extra $2. I felt it was just a bit steep for what we received. This place has lots of potential, great servers, and obviously good cooks in the kitchen. It just needs a more sophisticated approach to doing the best it can for all its customers in terms of food quantity. I don't mind paying a good dollar for well served, prepared and fulfilling food. read more

Decided to check out Avenue bistro due to good online reviews, and I am glad I did! The patio was a nice place to spend a sunny lunch hour, and the service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. The seared scallop appetizer intrigued me from the moment I saw it on the menu, and the flawless presentation hinted at the flavours to come. A base of apple slaw, followed by pulled pork that melted in my mouth, and finally three perfectly cooked scallops nestled on top, all pulled together and delivered in a big way! For my main I had the fish tacos... with pieces of tempura lingcod and salmon on each the light flavours combined nicely to finish off the meal. Another amazing late lunch/early dinner at the Avenue Bistro! We started with a couple of cocktails (craft beer and vodka martini--$8 for a generous martini!) and the amazing tapenade/hummus appetizer. For our main courses, my husband had the pesto spaghettini and Caesar salad--he raved about the pasta. I had the bean tacos and a cup of the cream of carrot soup. The soup was to die for--so sumptuous and flavourful. The tacos were also delicious--but I ordered the small and could still eat only half. We were both far too full for dessert but ordered a couple of lattes (only $4 for a BIG latte). We absolutely love that they offer SO many vegetarian options. This was a very spot in quite Comox close to where we were staying. We have the beet salad and Zen oysters to start and both were very satisfying!. The mains came and they didn't disappoint!. Great flavour in the pasta dishes and the fig toffee pudding finished it beautifully. Service was top shelf. This is definitely the place to go for Brunch while in Comox. A nice selection of Benedicts.. i went with the Italiano. Poached eggs on polenta, covered with a sweet sultry tomato sauce, and sprinkled with a sharp cheese. Large servings of fruit, and perfect amount of potatoes and yams. Possibly the best place in Comox Valley, but still room for improvement. Excellent food, most importantly, a good menu, nice surroundings, and clean toilets. Unfortunately they are very, very slow. Not a problem if you're not in a rush, and there's also several items they have run out of, no matter what time of day, or day of the week you're there. Pleasant staff though, and generally a high standard of food. We'll be back. Update: The last few visits have seen a big improvement in wait times. Had a plate of fresh oysters that we're exquisite. Two fish entrees from the fresh menu - sockeye salmon and halibut that were cooked just right. The potato salad served with the planked salmon was worth a2nd helping also had their "not too sweet" coconut cream pie. Fantastic! read more

The staff was wonderful...and the food was tasty but so over-salted I am still body swollen 2 days later. Also, it was supposed to be GF bread and I've been sick since I ate. Today I am bed bound as I'm rendered immobile due to severe wheat sensitivities. My husband said it was the worst fish and chips he'd ever had. So SALTY!! Salt does enhance flavour in large quantized...it prevents appreciating the flavours of the food. This is a retirement town so much if the clientele are SENIORS and most of us cannot have toxic table salt. The cook should warned that s/he is RUINING the food. It was our first and last time. Oh...and ridiculously expensive. $1.50 for 1 ounce of coleslaw ...you know ...in a tiny paper cup meant for dressings I guess. Wow. Never again. read more

I recently paid for a staff meal we ordered for takeout from the Avenue and although it wasn't bad it did have some surprises. For one, the Salad Nicoise I ordered had a bundle of greens in it about the size of my baby's fist. I expect such a salad to have some sizable greens I can use to toss the awesome tuna, olives, egg, etc into but in this case I was very disappointed. That said everyone else enjoyed their meal to at least a good rating so I do recommend the place. Just don't get the salad and expect much. read more

My family and I love the atmosphere, food and staff at Avenue and we know we won't be disappointed whenever we go. Tonight was no exception: We ordered take-out and when my husband arrived to pick it up he realized that he grabbed the wrong wallet - he told the person helping him (who just happened to be the owner) that he would go home, grab his wallet and come right back. The owner told him to take the food, go home and enjoy and come back and pay later. What amazing customer service!! This place is a delight for the palate and the eyes. Food is great and the atmosphere is relaxing. Love the light fixtures... So cool. Every visit has been a treat. I really enjoyed the seafood bumps during my last visit. So tasty. Actually I requested two salmon bumps instead of the usual one salmon and one tuna. They had no problem with this request. This is a good place to have an early dinner, while you are waiting for your next ferry to Powell River!! We relied on Yelp to browse on the web for a good eatery in the Comox/Courtney area, for an early dinner, at 5:00 p.m., before our 7:30 p.m. ferry and have found out that many restaurants in the vicinity were closed until 5:30 p.m. But this place stayed open all day! What was more wonderful was that it was shown on their front door glass panel that for several years, since year 2013, they have been awarded the award of excellence by TripAdvisor, our trusted travel advisory website. They really lives up to all the good words said about them. The quality of food is very good and fresh....the chef has attended to every detail in a dish. The local dark beer tastes good too. The service of the waiter was very attentive and good. It was really a pleasant surprise for us to find such a gem, tucked away in Comox, within 15 mins. drive to the ferry to Powell River, where our son resides. The next time we go over to Comox, we will definitely revisit this restaurant! read more

Good service and good food, all at reasonable prices. How can you go wrong? We happened to be there on a Thursday night when they had pizza and pasta on special and the lamb ragu was deadly good (and $12!). Staff were friendly and attentive, the ambiance is pleasant and they had a reasonable wine list, including a selection of wines from Vancouver Island.
