This is an upscale modern Canadian restaurant in Cedar, BC, technically the greater Nanaimo area. We made reservations for 6pm dinner on a Saturday, and we were promptly seated. There are lots of parking available both the main lot or the side lot that takes you to the back of the restaurant. We got beef carpaccio, calamari dijonnaise, and lingcod to share, as well as a glass of red and white wine from Vancouver Island. We were served some small fish bites as amuse bouche which is a nice touch and pretty common in nice restaurants like this The beef carpaccio was super fresh and contrasts well with the texture of crispy sunchokes. Very aesthetic and well executed Calamari dijonnaise has a sharper flavor from the sauce, and the calamari is lightly battered but still crispy. A heartier dish for an upscale restaurant, but it works well as we were quite hungry after lots of walking that day Lingcod is more Asian fusion take of an entree, so I am a fan. The crispy rice is super flavorful albeit on the oilier side, and the cod itself is very fresh. Every bite has a bit of sophistication from all the ingredients around alongside fresh vegetables like pickled beet. The wine pairs well with the dishes. Service is excellent as I was very thirsty and the server kept up well with water refills. They clean up plates in between courses and checked up on us a few times and had a nice yet brief conversation to keep the energy flowing. Don't forget to take a walk outside before or after dinner! It's a small nice garden, quite romantic. Overall, I would recommend this place tucked in a bit away from Nanaimo, and it is worth the journey whether you rideshare or drive or transit. read more

The dining room is charming, cozy and has great ambiance! The servers are pleasant, attentive, patient, not rushed, thorough, and their timing is perfect. The dishes we have had there are unforgettable...and we keep coming back for more! Walked in on Wednesday and they snuck in a family of 3 of us on a cancelation. What luck. The food was so delicious! A highlight of our trip. The wine flight was tasty too - a great local wine was included. 5 courses with different dishes for the three of us to share (or not!). If you're looking for a place with upscale cuisine, a bit more romantic ambience, and excellent service then this is your restaurant. The portions are generous, and the preparation and platings are as good as you would find in any major market fine dining eatery. Even the table bread was excellent. My only modest observations would be on the hummus/fry bread appetizer. The huge amount of hummus and olive tapenade on the plate does not consume well with the smallish amount of fry bread, and the olive oil/balsamic drizzle pattern on the plate is pretty but the oil on top of a oil fried food like fry bread is a bit much. Save the money on the oil and vinegar and add a few more fry bread bits to eat all that good hummus with! Service was excellent. A decent bar, but it could be brought into this era a bit more to attract younger patrons who like variety a bit more. Very eighties kind of stock. Possibly using other interior bar for its purpose instead of staging their set-ups (place settings) might be a bit more financially rewarding as well as more visually appealing. Waiting there for your table might be nice. If you're in the area, absolutely a place here you should seek out. read more

Food is hot and miss, service is great! Bit pricey for what you get in my opinion. Beautiful restaurant though.

Fall on a plate. Spectacular splurge in Nanaimo. Shared warm olives and pickled vegetables. Duck breast with potato croquettes, cranberry relish, vegetables. Beef tenderloin and prawns with truffled polenta fries, mushroom purée, vegetables. Homemade vanilla ice cream with berry coulis for dessert. Friendly service and beautiful venue! read more

When on the road I golf and eat. My golf game needs improvement but I know how to eat well. I ask my hosts, when traveling, if they had one restaurant to go to where would the go. If they say Applebees I keep asking. Tonight's selection is one of the best and most appreciated suggestions I have had. Room for one at the bar, yes please. $8.00 appetizers on Friday nights and superb drink options. I highly suggest the Porcupine Prawns, Calamari Dijonnaise, and Rock Crab Cakes. I was prepared for a Steak but was well satisfied. For desert homemade Salted Caramel ice cream. Outstanding. Do not miss this place as it is set in an 1904 house and reminded me of my grandmas house. More gastronomically updated food but same warm hospitality. We went on Wednesday night for the tasting menu during our VI vacation. Have to say this place is exceptional !! Very nice ambience with nice decor. Excellent wine list. Mahle House is a 100+ year old heritage building; the current restaurant has been here for over 20 years and has its own organic herb garden onsite. On Wednesdays they feature a 5-course tasting menu for $40 (wine pairings $25 extra), and on Sundays, a 3-course menu for $35. Given the quality and the attentive service, it's outstanding value, and humorous touches make visiting a delight (e.g. a sign on the second floor proclaims "Life's too short to drink bad wine.") I absolutely love the Male House but it is definitely expensive. My favourite is the Wednesday night mystery night. You get 5 courses for $50, each dish a surprise. Sometimes Costco will have gift certificates especially around Christmas time: 2 $50 for $80 dollars. I love to get a flight of wine to go with the mystery night dinner too. Make sure you make a reservation for the mystery dinner if you go on a Wednesday. read more

Overpriced rather ordinary food. Hard pub style tables and chairs... what no table clothes?! Had the Wednesday Adventure menu, best were the seared tuna and crab cakes. Such a quaint spot with beautiful grounds to enjoy snapping a few photos before going in to dine. Our waitress went above and beyond , so friendly, helpful . Started off the night with Porcupine Prawns and Hummus tapenade ( both delicious) . Our entrees consisted of halibut with gnocchi, short rib & truffled ricotta ravioli and pistachio crusted lamb ( every meal looked like a work of art and all were scrumptious )We ended the night with two dessert one being the chocolate and ginger cake with a raspberry sorbet ( and trust me I would love to be able to make this sorbet in pail fulls ) lemon cheesecake did not disappoint loved the hint of tartness. An altogether wonderful dining experience. The staff was friendly, efficient and accommodating. We attended a mystery Wednesday where the menu is decided by the chef for each diner. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the selections and they (with some advance notice) accommodated for a dairy allergy in one of our party. This place is as good as it gets! This is a family run business set in a quaint and cozy house. Tara and her husband run the restaurant and the staff seem to genuinely enjoy working for them. Last night was our third time at the Mahle House and again it didn't disappoint. We went with the Suprise Wednesday (5 course option for $40). If you want to choose this option, everyone at your table has to choose it. Next time, we're going to try A La Carte. A big thank you to Tara, Sholeigh and the other woman who served us (sorry your name escapes me) who worked well as a team and were attentive to us during our meal. The time and attention given by everyone at this restaurant made our family occasion perfect. The quality of food and wine was outstanding. The owners and chefs are knowledgeable and friendly, and the restaurant is sophisticated and comfortable all at the same time. You do not have to dress up (I noticed people in jeans) and the atmosphere is quiet enough for conversation but also could manage a loud laughing table like ours! My husband and I had his birthday dinner at the Mahle House on a Wednesday night while visiting Vancouver Island. We did their Adventure menu (only on Wednesday night) where the chef picks what you eat, you get 5 courses and you each get a different item with each course. So we tasted 10 different things and they were all very good to excellent. The service was very good and the atmosphere was cozy and the price was very reasonable. I did not have the impression they have a lot of wine expertise on the staff, at least our server did not really provide great advice, but that may be because you can't "pair" wine if you don't know what you are eating in advance. My family has been coming to the Mahle House for many years and have always been impressed and thoroughly enjoyed their dynamic menu. We love this restaurant so much that my husband and I got married in their beautiful garden! The entire experience was amazing, we arrived early to set up (they graciously offered us the use of their chairs and folding tables) but were pleasantly surprised to see they had already set everything up with pitchers of ice water and glasses! How kind! Dinner was delicious and everyone is still talking about their meals and the attentive staff. They easily accommodated our guests with food sensitivities and dietary needs as well as kindly plating our wedding cake! Well, it's like this.....I have so been looking forward to trying the Mahle House. It is recommended by many, and good top shelf restaurants are quite scarce in our area. Tonight was the night and a bit anticlimactic i am sorry to report. The room was beautiful, the other waitresses friendly and efficient. We had who I believe was the Owner serving us, and a bit slow as I think he was also the bar tender and was distracted,.. which tends to put me on edge. Then the food: I had a Mixed Grill entree, which came hot and beautifully plated. The Mix was a small lamb loin, pretty good, a beef tenderloin that was a little too chewy and hard to cut in my opinion, and a tasty spicy sausage,nicely cooked, and a couple of shrimp which seemed a bit out of place.However! There was way too much mint sauce (albeit good mint sauce) piled onto my plate! It overwhelmed everything, and although a small bit of this sauce would have been a delicious compliment to my little lamb tenderloin, it was so inappropriate for the beef and sausage, and what about those lonely little shrimp? Just a bad combination. I would have loved a dab of a nice red wine reduction or something similar to compliment the beef, and the sausage was good enough to stand alone, not sure what would have made the shrimp a little more memorable. So, it was a disappointment tonight. But, it was not a show stopper of an experience, the food generally was good quality and cooked to perfection, but just need to be a little more thought into the whole package. My wife enjoyed her dinner, a phyllo entree which she described as 'good', not outstanding, just 'good'.... I think this place has all the elements, just maybe a bit out of sync tonight... We will try it again. read more
