Dedicated to supplying artists, advertising agencies, local art schools and DIY crafters since 1950 and with branches across Canada you can find fairly much everything you might need to get creative in this creativity complex. In my experience, it's great to chat with the staff here about what you're working on or looking for. The organization is a bit complex because they have so much stuff, so it's helpful to have one of the wise young art students leading you around, plus: adorable. The vibe in here is clean, bright and modern, not at all the inspiring sense of dripping with history and the labours of love as you find in true old school places like Pearl Paint in NYC, but it gets the job done in style. Some items suffer from the usual Montreal markup, but they make up for it by having in-house brands for things like sketchbooks that are really cheap.

I recently attempted to purchase a large amount of materials for an upcoming exhibit, planning to…read morespend a budget of millions. Instead of purchasing online or from a bigbox art retailer I opted to visit Black Horse, as they are one of few remaining independent art stores in the area. I arrived at the shop 45 minutes after opening as I am on strict time contraints at all time, I have to work out of efficiency. But when I arrived the shop keeper told me that I had to be quick or come back at a later point in the day. His excuse was that he had to remove his car from the snow. But mind you this was around 11AM, and this shop keeper should not be dealing with personal matters during business hours. Regardless I told him that I needed quite a bit of material and he informed me that I still should be fast, go back later, or visit another retailer. He should have seen my desire to spend a money in his shop as a means of paying for his snow removal. Unfortunately he rushed me out of there. This put a stick in the wheel of my entire exhibit's time table, as I had to travel a great distance of time waiting for an online order. All I have to say is that I will never be taking my money to this business, nor will I be recommending this business to anyone ever. Shame on this place, and the shop keeper I dealt with, the customer should always come first.

The minute I walked in the door, I knew I had found my art supply shop. After checking out all of the box stores, as can be the initial go-to when re-orienting in a new town, I was feeling a bit let down. I mean, here is this beautiful city saturated with artists and all I could find was overpriced canvas and incomplete color offerings. I knew there had to be something better and after some more digging, I came across this little shop on Pine Street. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable about all things 'art'. As an active member in the artist community, he is totally in-tune with local events and if you do happen to stump him with a question, he can point you in the right direction. I feel lucky to have found a place to go when the creativity strikes and happy to share it with new and seasoned artists alike.

This used to be called "British Blue Print" and it was a terrific store that was open for 72 years,…read moreaccording to their web site. It got sold and the changed the name to "Centre d'Art BBP". TLDR: Sketchy place, unless there's an apocalypse and I really need some paper and pens, I plan to avoid it. I was in there to buy a tool commonly used in making art. Arriving at the new "BBP" version of the store, I notice right away that it is about half the size as the old one, and has very minimal stock that makes you think they are going out of business. Long story short, the sketchy guy who runs the place gave me one price for a used version of the tool I wanted, and almost doubled the price when we got to the cash. He then claimed he had quoted the higher price. I'm not an idiot, and I know when I am getting scammed. The store is perfectly summed up by two words, in bold capital letters: SKETCHY BUSINESS. Seriously.
