Wonderful to have a yarn shop close to my home in Richmond. I came on a Sunday afternoon for the first time, to browse for yarn to make a sweater for my 6-year-old son. I've been knitting for 30 years, but go through periods where I dont make anything for a long time. And I usually get my yarn from big box craft stores. But, since my son asked me to make him something special, I thought I'd buy some "proper" yarn lol. I spent probably 30+ minutes browsing all of the fibers and weights, and finally settled on some Malabrigo wool. I didn't need any notions or accessories, but they certainly have some cute things!! And boy--they have some lovely finished samples on mannequins and hanging around, too. I am sure I will be back again. read more

Lovely little yarn shop, even the customers were helpful and asked if I needed any help! There was a knitting area near the back and three ladies knitting away. The yarns were well displayed but they didn't have any of the Rowan brand yarns that I was looking for. They did have tons of other brands that I wasn't familiar with so that was interesting to see. Even though it is not the closest yarn store to me geographically, it is absolutely my favorite! If you want a great yarn selection for fibers, colors, and prices, they have it! If you need help with your project or want to learn a new fiber skill, they have it! If you want to join a group of people for a casual sit and knit, either to relax or to energize your creative juices, they have it! Somehow the mix of people, both who work there and who come to knit there, is very organic, accepting all walks of life and knitting/crocheting skills. I have had challenging times in my life and did not show up there for over 6 months, and not that I came there regularly before. However, when I stepped into the shop people remembered me, my projects, and my favorite yarn (!). I was told to come and knit on their comfortable couch or armchairs at any time since I cannot make the evening hours for the regular meets. They carry Malbrigo Rios which is one of my favorite yarns to work with for garments because it's super wash and I can launder it easily and looks great. I was so excited to find this shop! There aren't many in the Bay Area that I've found. The first shop I tried was neat but impersonal. The ladies here offered to help me as soon as I walked in the door. It was also great to see diversity in employees and customers! Everyone looked so comfortable. There is a large variety to choose from and some knick knacks too. I thought the prices were reasonable. Parking was easy on the street, I came in the afternoon on a Wednesday. read more

I have recently adopted weaving as my new favorite craft, and I decided to have a yarn-shopping day with a close friend (a knitter) who was visiting from out of town. Avenue Yarns was our first Bay Area stop, and we were blown away by their gorgeous selection (as well as their very friendly & helpful staff)! They have a wonderful range of colors, and in a wide range of prices, too. I was looking to purchase a small-ish lap loom, and they introduced me to the super handy pop-out loom made by Black Sheep Goods (see photos). Not only was it within my budget, but it works perfectly for creating small-to-medium woven wall-hangings! I also decided to splurge on a gorgeous skein of hand-dyed, hand-spun yarn from Manos del Uruguay. I love the yarn so much that I have since returned to Avenue Yarns and bought two more skeins! Although I need to slow down with my yarn-splurging for the moment, when I'm ready to go on my next mini shopping spree, I'll be coming back to Avenue Yarns! read more

I'd been having a hard time finding worsted superwash merino in ordinary solid colors (pine green and tan), and they had them here. This shop seems to hit a sweet spot quality-wise, appearing to specialize in good quality staples. The staff were friendly, competent, and gracious about the umpteen questions I asked. The shelves are clearly marked with yarn weights, and plant-based options, making it easy to navigate. They appear to have a nice seating area too. Excellent knitting and crochet store with spacious lesson room in the back. Stock is well organized and staff is very knowledgeable about their products. I haven't been knitting for years due to carpal tunnel, but came in to check out the store. They pointed me towards an excellent book on reducing injury while knitting, and I walked out with three skeins of a lovely dk yarn. I finished my shawl, and brought my daughter in for supplies for her to knit her own hat. Great experience both times. read more

After a lunch at China Village, The Mother and I stopped by to check out Avenue Yarns. Back in the days of childhood yore, I attempted to learn how to knit and crochet. Since Winter has come and is still here, I got interested in learning how to knit and crochet all over again. Upon walking into Avenue Yarns, I felt like I stumbled upon a personal and curated cache of yarn of all kinds! Woweeeeee! Whoo hooo! I am raiding somebody's cedar cabinet of yarn here at Avenue Yarns! Avenue Yarns is reminiscent for me of the knitting department of Hink's of Berkeley, a legendary Berkeley department store that is now history that faded away in the 1970s. (Yep, I have been around that long!) Some of the set up of shelves and caches reminds me of the Hink's set-up. Shelves of colourful yarn in just about every shade imaginable! Books of yarn patterns to make creations beyond a cap and a scarf! Colourful sweaters, blankets, gloves, mittens, socks! And knitting and crocheting supplies beyond one's imagination. Call off the hounds, I have found a fantastic local yarn store right outside Berkeley! They have an amazing variety of yarns, including Brooklyn Tweed, Kelbourne Woolens, Hedgehog Fibers, and Rowan. I loved that the store was organized by yarn weight and they had many different projects to inspire you. This yarn shop on mid-to-lower Solano (across the street from the nursery) is full of light and fantastic yarns -- new stuff comes in all the time. They also carry a very nice selection of supplies. The front table is strewn with beautiful sample knits and yarns, arranged in great color combinations. Everyone on the staff is friendly and helpful. Check out the array of classes, and the "knit labs" will fix you up with expert help for your project at modest cost. Finally, I am grateful they are open seven days a week. I came in here yesterday in search of double pointed needles because I want to learn the difficult task of knitting in the round. I have been to quite a few yarn shops, and this one is by far my favorite one. I wish that I lived a little closer! The staff are always super friendly and helpful. You walk in and know that they are fellow knitters and you can just click with them. The last time that I was in I watched the staff help two ladies decipher a pattern, choose the right yarn base and give color recommendations. Their attention was totally on helping these ladies and at the same time there was someone available to help me with my check out needs so the staffers could continue to help the ladies. I have three very young kids and they're usually in tow with me. I can take them here and not feel shamed. The staff are so wonderful with them and to me. My oldest boy has always been interested in wanting to knit (he has a hard time with motor skills, we're trying! :)) and Ray was happy to show my son the project he was working on and talk to him about knitting. This totally made my son's day and renewed his determination. I really love that the selection of yarn and colors are modern and fresh! There's something for every budget range too, and the accessories are fantastic. If there is a hard to find item that I need this shop usually has it. read more

Avenue Yarns is a great LYS just outside of Berkeley, easy to find and filled with great yarns. The staff is friendly and knowledgable, happy to talk about the merits of different yarns and to share pattern ideas. I made a special trip to Avenue Yarns while at a conference in Berkeley, and the visit was the highlight of my time in California. Yarns are well organized by weight, with a nice variety of manufacturers, fibers and price points. I'd love to see a few more samples, particularly of the yarns I'm not familiar with (but the lack of samples didn't keep me from buying an unfamiliar yarn!). If I'd had more time, I'd have sat down for a bit of knitting, and have the feeling I'd have felt right at home ... Next time I'm in the Berkeley area, I'll leave myself more time at Avenue Yarns! read more
