Not only is my son developing and flourishing, I am a better parent because of what I have learned. The element of being in the forest is so beautiful and unique. My kiddo was confused at first "how a school could be closed on the weekend if there are no doors" :), but I've grown to really adore the benefits of a fully outdoor school. From pointing out where sour grass is in abundance to spotting dark-eyed junkos, my son has a beautiful appreciation for the natural world around him that is not something that I would've instilled in him. They have a book station, a "mud" kitchen, and sometimes structured art activities (and I can't speak to what they do in the older classes yet), but I love that the majority of their play is imaginative. There is space to run, climb, and explore. The educators really follow the lead of the kids interests too and bring in books, conversation, art within that space. Our son was timid and introverted when he started this program and it's amazing to see his physical and emotional confidence build through exploring in nature and experiencing the physical range of weather. What most struck me was the growth in the expansiveness of his imagination through the program which was an unexpected outcome. Watching his ability to play imaginatively within the constraints of the nature classrooms has been amazing to watch. I've also been so impressed by the quality of the educators at Spire. Teacher Kristyn, in particular, is so intentional about how she uses the outdoor environment to develop the various components of early childhood education. She's very clear how she uses various parts of the forest to work on fine or gross motor skills, for example, or how she engages the children in various play-based scenarios and activities to work on cognitive function or various interpersonal skills. The school is also very flexible, inclusive and supportive of families. The lack of rigidity in the school has been a huge plus for us. They are very supportive of each child's individuality and focus their time on adapting to each child's unique interests and needs. The school has a very low student to teacher ratio so the level of individualized support and the depth of relationships is wonderful. I feel very grateful to live in a place like San Francisco where the weather allows for a school like this. I figure my son has years of sitting inside at a desk so why not let him spend as much time outside in his early school years as possible. Nature is powerful and healing.

I can not say enough good things about Gilda (Gigi), the woman who runs it, and her family, who assist. Here are some of the things I love about this daycare. ENVIRONMENT The space is clean and tidy every day. It looks recently redone. There is good lighting even on foggy days, and there is a safe backyard area for the kids to play in. There are plenty of toys to play with, but not so many that it gets cluttered and overwhelmed with mess. All the expected childproof devices are in place, and the entire daycare is 2 spacious rooms so it's easy to keep an eye on the kids. The neighborhood is also safe. ACTIVITIES During the day, the children play with toys and with each other. There are also books, music, and all kinds of learning disguised as play; at 21 months, our daughter can recognize and say basic colors, shapes, animals, numbers, and letters AND most amazing to me is that she has started singing a handful of songs including her ABCs! I know my husband and I can't take credit for all of that, and it must be that she's learning a lot at daycare. I also attribute my daughter's socialization skills to being around other children and having loving caregivers like Gilda and her husband. COMMUNICATION Gilda is always friendly and positive, and at the end of the day when we pick our daughter up, she takes care to let us know about what happened during the day. She accommodates our nitpicky requests to know how our girl ate, drank, slept, and pooped every day! She's also great about communicating via email and text. SCHEDULING AND HOURS Gilda has been very accommodating of our need for flexible scheduling; there were months when our daughter attended full-time and months when she's only gone 3 days a week, and Gilda has been very generous in working with that. Their hours are *extremely* flexible as well. I know some daycares expect you to be there the same time every day, or if you miss a dropoff time, you can't come again until the second dropoff time. With Happy Campers, there is the option of flexible dropoff times, which is great. She even babysits for us occasionally, and our girl loves having dinner with their family. FOOD Speaking of which, it's absolutely fantastic that they provide hot breakfast and lunch as well as morning and afternoon snack. Such a relief not having to pack anything. It's so good that we have to step up our culinary game at home to keep up with the excellent home-cooked food she receives at daycare! And when my baby was still drinking breastmilk and formula, Gilda was wonderful about making sure she drank as much as was necessary and offering formula if the baby was still hungry. HEALTH Healthwise, when my girl shows signs of teething pain or fever, Gilda has been sure to contact me to check what she should do, though I trust her implicitly if she can't get a hold of me. In addition, Happy Campers is a licensed daycare trained in first aid and CPR. CHILD-STAFF RATIO AND DISCIPLINE Currently, there are only a few children at the daycare, which I love, so the kids all get lots and lots of attention and love. While my daughter is younger and only starting to get time-outs, I have seen Gilda in action with an older child, and she handled the situation very well--she's loving but firm. I've seen her handle separation anxiety, and she always keeps her cool and gets the child to calm down. COST The best part is that Happy Campers is SO affordable. Really affordable, especially considering the great quality of care and Gilda's willingness to work with the family. As a footnote, while it's not necessarily a requirement for a successful daycare, I like that Gilda and her husband have 2 grown kids who seem happy and healthy, and one helps with the daycare. Initially, we were a little apprehensive to be sending our child back to in-person school, but after a few months of her attending school here, we feel more at ease knowing that Teacher Yin, Jenny, and Candy are meticulous in enforcing covid safety protocol such as change of clothes as soon as the child arrives, having different shoes and outerwear for outdoor play, and dedicated utensils. Aside from that, we also wanted to make sure that it was also an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. We were especially pleased during the tour at the school that all corners are rounded and properly fastened and even the playground is fully padded. The curriculum is a combination of play based and age-appropriate learning activities. Our daughter is bilingual Cantonese and English speaking, but in just a few short months, we begin noticing her using more Mandarin words, which we know is solely attributed to her learning in school. The lunch provided is also well balanced with fruits and vegetables accompanying each meal. Like other parents have mentioned, Teacher Yin sends videos and pictures daily to share what the children ate and learned on that day. It is also a very family-oriented school, with familiar and friendly faces dropping off and picking up their children from school. We are glad to have found Superkids Preschool, and are beyond grateful that the teachers are so dedicated, kind, and compassionate in doing what they do everyday. We highly recommend this school, and we look forward to having our daughter enjoy and watching her flourish and grow in her last year and half at this school!
