Located in the old city, this hostel is about as central as you could get in Bristol. If you buy 3nights here you also get 1 night's stay extra for FREE!! The hostel boasts a big kitchen with tea/coffee/hot chocolate, a residents bar open into the early hours as well as free wifi - there is also a piano & guitar room!!!! A great place for visitors to the city, and cheap accomodation for when you get booted out of your house!

They wander round in their pyjamas, sleeping in the living areas. . Poor security. Staff not on duty all night so strangers can get in, so do the police looking for people. No locks on rooms so theft is a problem. Problems with bedbugs. Not very clean, especially bathrooms. YOu don't want to know! Kitchen far too small, no space for food, some of the stoves don't work. Staff make a fuss over Spanish visitors, treat the rest like crap. Old building so a lot of noise generally, and no heating.

The hostel is of excellent quality, seemingly more like a hotel than a hostel, but still has dorms ranging from rooms for two to ten plus. The hostel welcomes groups and solitary visitors and has a range of communal spaces including a cafe, classroom, games room, library, lounge and canteen. The dorms are extremely tidy and well kept. The hostel isn't the cheapest you can find, but definitely worth the money for a comfortable and enjoyable visit to Bristol.

I arrived before check-in so used the free luggage storage. Only paid £10 for a 20-bed mixed dorm which was quite spacious--plenty of space for everyone's backpacks and random crap us backpackers spread around our beds. 20 beds is a lot but everyone was quiet and respectful at night. There was an event going on at the downstairs bar so it was noisy. So definitely bring earplugs or listen to music before going to sleep if you're a light sleeper. Each bunk bed had cages underneath where you can lock up your valuables (bring your own padlock!). As for the common spaces, I was impressed. Large, spacious common rooms. One was next to the kitchen, another one with a long desk with plenty of electrical outlets at each station and a few couches. The kitchen was spacious and well-stocked with pots, pans, kitchen utensils, oil, salt and seasonings. Plenty of toilets and showers which were all clean. I wish I was around for another night as there was free bowling on Monday nights!

Well apparently a heck of a lot more- since we essentially stayed in a construction site. Couldn't find wifi connection and no promised tea to nurse our hangovers. They were also double booked and the people who worked there all said conflicting things and were entirely disinterested in the hostel. Apparently a staff member also unlocked our room and came INTO OUR ROOM at 3:30am in the morning (I've passed out but the 4 other people in the room noticed, so I am kinda taking their word for it as 4 people can't hallucinate about the same thing) They kindly gave us 2 hours of free Karaoke for completely messing up our booking which was much appreciated. But putting us in a room with no bedding, then getting us to strip our own beds just doesn't justify paying 20 quid. I'll be staying at the YHA next time- at least I know they will probably a) know what they are doing; b) not lie about their product; c) not come into our room uninvited at an ungodly hour.

The first pub you get to from the bear pit going to Stokes Croft. This looks generally like a good…read morepub for groups of people (which it is) but it has a surprising secret in also having great food and well-looked after beer. Their food is organic and very tasty. They aren't mean on their portion size either. They have six beers on at a time, often Gem, Doom Bar and Deuchers IPA and last time I went they had Golden Hare and Butcombe. They have a full bar, interestingly some vegan wine, and live jazz on a Monday (8-10pm) which means they get a mixed crowd of friendly crusties, backpackers staying upstairs and those who like food and beer which is not a bad thing. Vibe is always friendly and chatty. I have felt comfortable here as a couple and with a group of about 20 of us trying to organise a new year party whilst eating lunch and having a beer - the staff handled our comings and goings with ease. Pub is open til 11-ish (12-ish on the weekends) and they have the next door Attic Bar for later nights.

To top it all - they play host to the Bristol festival, Drum 'n' Bass nights and great gigs - officially the hottest venue in the 'up and coming' Stokes Croft area right now, and deservedly so, methinks.

Now for the bad: it is a 25 minute walk out of the city centre, and Bedminster isn't the nicest of suburbs, at all. The showers are not separate from each other, so you literally have four naked guys showering next to each other. when in here, the "resident guys" behind the desk would come in and look! Not a truly comfortable experience, especially when there is "Bristol Backpackers" right in the centre of town, where everything is more professional and welcoming, and it is for the same price!

Harts Lane is so narrow, my partner hesitated pulling our car into the lane and then really had second thoughts about pulling into the tiny parking area. I was too busy loving everything I could see to care about that! Then, we walked into the bed and breakfast, where an out-of-breath Linda Smith greeted us warmly and apologized for not being ready. We didn't mind. After all, there were TWO pubs in one TINY village! ;) When we returned from our obligatory pub visit, Linda led us upstairs and to our room. Do you know how sometimes places look clean but don't smell clean? This clean room smelled GREAT! Then, I went into the bathroom. It was completely remodeled and very modern. I was in heaven! A quaint, clean bedroom with a clean modern shower! There was even a place for me to sit down in the bedroom and put on my makeup. I decided to use it for sitting down and reading a daily devotional, but just having this wonderful space was a plus. Did I mention there was a fireplace? The next morning, Linda cooked us "whatever we wanted." My partner happily ordered sausage and eggs, and I ordered bacon and eggs. While we waited, I looked around the family dining room. There were wonderful family pictures--Linda and Ian Smith's wedding pictures, their children, etc. My partner meanwhile marveled at his freshly squeezed orange juice and some of the woodwork in the room. Then, the food came. The bacon was the size of 4 American slices stuck together but a lot thicker. Everything was delicious, but after we ate, we felt like we needed a nap! If you go to this area of England, stay here! The Smiths are very congenial people, their accommodations are clean, their food is outstanding, and the village is picturesque. You'll swear you're in a movie.
