I visited the Axe & Cleaver yesterday evening 11th August 2010. We go every Wednesday for the pub quiz. But as they had a special offer on 2 4 1 on main meals we thought we would eat. Because of the offer the pub was a lot more busy then normal. We asked for a table, and was informed they weren't any available even though they had some empty tables with reserved on them. We were told we would just have to keep an eye out and grab one when we could. We ordered a bottle of wine at the bar and informed they had no cold wine, after complaining they did manage to find us a cold bottle, even though it wasn't what we ordered. I asked the waitress to keep an eye out for a table for us, and immediately sat us at one of the reserved tables, not sure why this couldn't have been done before. When ordering our food the menu was literally halved as they had ran out of most things, not sure how you run out of meat and potatoes when they are surrounded by farm shops. I eventually ordered the steak which was over cooked and very average certainly not worth the £15.00, the chicken dish was dry and the beef bourguignon had a lack of beef. On a positive note the waitress was excellent. But I won't eat there again; it is on a par with Weatherspoon, but not Weatherspoon prices.
The manager just seemed to bury his head and didn't have a clue what was going on, nor it seems did half the staff. read more
