I originally contacted New York City Nutrition because my digestion had become unpredictable. I was…read moredealing with bloating, heartburn, occasional diarrhea, and the uncomfortable feeling that certain foods were affecting me even though I could not identify a clear pattern. I had already tried making random changes on my own, but I was mostly reacting to symptoms rather than understanding what might be contributing to them. What impressed me most was that the gut health consultation did not feel like a generic appointment where someone simply tells you to stop eating gluten, dairy, sugar, and everything else you enjoy. My dietitian took the time to listen to my history, my normal eating habits, the types of packaged foods I bought, and the symptoms I noticed after certain meals. I felt heard rather than judged. The explanations were also practical and easy to understand. Instead of overwhelming me with medical language, she helped me look at the relationship between ingredients, portions, eating patterns, and digestive symptoms. The recommendations were broken into manageable habits that I could actually follow in normal life. I did not feel as though I had been handed a restrictive diet that would be impossible to maintain while working, traveling, eating out, or spending time with other people. One of the biggest lessons for me involved protein bars and foods marketed as "zero sugar." I used to see zero sugar on the front of a package and automatically assume it was the healthier choice. I never stopped to ask how something could taste extremely sweet while supposedly containing no sugar. My dietitian encouraged me to turn the package around and read the complete ingredient list, not only the marketing claims on the front. I learned that many sweet zero-sugar snacks rely on sugar alcohols or intense sweeteners. These ingredients are not automatically harmful to everyone, but certain sugar alcohols can be difficult for some people to digest and may contribute to bloating, gas, cramping, or loose stools. In my own case, some of the bars I was eating appeared to make my heartburn and diarrhea worse. That conversation completely changed how I shop. I now look at the source of the sweetness, the length of the ingredient list, the amount of fiber, and the balance between protein, carbohydrates, and fat. I also understand that "zero sugar" and "zero added sugar" are not the same thing. A food can contain naturally occurring sugar from fruit without having refined sugar or sweeteners added to it. One example of how I now apply those principles is PROTABAR. It was recommended to me and it's a great example of a protein snack which label reflects many of the things I was taught to look for. It contains four recognizable ingredients: dates, egg whites, hazelnuts, and cocoa. One 50-gram bar has 210 calories, 15 grams of protein, 24 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of fat. It contains 13 grams of total sugar from its ingredients, primarily the dates, but zero grams of added sugar. For me, that is a much more honest and balanced approach than making a bar extremely sweet with sugar alcohols just so the package can advertise zero sugar. The egg whites provide protein, the dates provide carbohydrates and natural sweetness, the hazelnuts provide fat and texture, and the bar contains enough fiber to make it feel like a substantial snack. Of course, no single snack is automatically right for every person or every digestive condition, but it is one of the packaged options that fits the label-reading rules I now follow. Since applying the simple habits I learned here, my gut has gradually been stabilizing. I pay more attention to how I eat, not only what I eat. I track patterns instead of panicking after one uncomfortable meal, and I make more informed choices when comparing packaged foods. I also feel less anxious around food because I am no longer dividing everything into "good" and "bad" based on a claim printed on the front of a package. The process does require patience. Digestive issues do not necessarily disappear after one appointment or one dietary change. However, I appreciated that the approach was realistic, personalized, and focused on sustainable habits rather than quick promises. I left with a clearer understanding of my own body and practical tools I can continue using. For anyone who feels confused by bloating, irregular digestion, food labels, or conflicting nutrition advice, New York City Nutrition is worth considering. The experience helped me move away from marketing claims and toward simpler, more thoughtful food choices. That education has been just as valuable to me as the improvement in my symptoms.

I have been with Lorraine for almost a month now and can safely say that she has completely changed my life and point of view on food. She provides such a comfortable and safe environment to talk about not just food, but my cognitive and mental outlook on my life. Upon my consultation, she made sure to note all aspects of my health and past eating habits, and created a delicious customized meal plan based on my preferences, as I am primarily plant based. These plans also integrate meal prep into them, which has reduced my snacking tendencies, as I can just grab my prepped meals from the fridge. I have fallen in love with cooking at home again and get excited about each meal as they are all so diverse and completely satiate me. It's crazy how quickly my taste preferences have changed and crave her recipes. The 3-month plan I opted for includes weekly check-ins, where Lorraine doesn't mention calories or weight every time, but more of how I am feeling mentally based on the foods I am eating. She is also sure to educate me on certain foods to avoid or gravitate towards which can positively affect my lifestyle. I look forward to seeing her each week because she celebrates every small victory with me. I could not recommend anyone else- thank you Lorraine!!!
