However, when my family and I had arrived on 7/17/16, the first thing we noticed was a group of people staying way, way back in the brush. They had a couple tents up at the site, but behind them were many more. I instantly got an uneasy feeling because I could clearly see that they were living there. They most certainly looked comfy. While unloading the car the people conveniently were going to their vehicles and watching us do our thing. We stayed at the very last site on the right, aka the furthest one from them. That night, however, this large group of people got loud. And do I mean loud! One of them even stumbled into our lamp with a lantern explaining that she had lost her cigarettes and thought she left them at our camp and started looking around. I told her we found no such thing and I'd let her know if I came across them. Around 11pm I had to run to my car and grab a jacket, and while walking there two of those people were sitting on a table two spots away from us, drinking and smoking, and what I presume was eves dropping. They scared the absolute hell out of me when I walked by. Then, on my way back from the car, one of them approached me in pure darkness and exclaimed "if any of you ladies need anything, let me know." Um, creeper. What was gonna be a three night trip turned into 11 hours. We left the next morning because we didn't feel comfortable leaving our stuff alone. While we were packing the next morning, members of that group would walk by and examine us closely. It was just insane. Aside from the weirdos, however, the "camp host" is a joke and is obviously there for the money. Getting down the beach now is a pain in the ass. The bridge that you cross to get to the sand practically broke in half and is now blocked off. To get down you basically have to go through someone's camp, down a steep flight of stairs, and pray that you don't slip down the rocks you have to maneuver down. This camp site used to be wonderful and I have so many fun memories here. Hopefully some day it can get back to what it once was. It's still a gorgeous beach, though!

This beautiful beach in Brookings can be found by using a beach access trail from the water…read moretreatment facility parking area (indicated by a public access sign as you turn into the parking area). I wouldn't call this a hike as it can't be longer than a mile to get down to the beach, and most of it is paved. It is only accessible up until a certain point, then turns into gravel, eventually sea-smoothed stones, bits of logs, and sand. Our party of six adults and two children were looking for a beach to explore along the Brookings coast, and this ended up being a great choice. There are some extremely cool points of interest along the way, like panoramic views of the point and surrounding coastline, and a lookout trail that splits off and carries one up a steep cliff. None of the people in our beach going party opted for this, but it did look like a fun photo op. I wasn't sure if my dang back would allow for me to get up there. Maybe if I ever return. It was instead onward to the beach to set up chairs, let the kids make sand castles, and wander about looking for shells and tide pools, of which there were many! Hmm I'm just now remembering I left the teeny sand dollar I found at the airbnb. Aww. Our day was bright and sunny, which a friend local to the area told me is rare. Personally I was looking forward to an overcast chilly Oregon coast day, but I can't complain about sun and a gentle, cool breeze compared to the over 100 degree weather my friends and I left behind in California to come up here a couple weeks ago in September 2022. The water was not too cold to swim in, or at least wade in, which is what I opted to do. Salt water healing, yes please. This is a great beach for watching wildlife and observing native plants. One of the kids found the chonkiest bull kelp I have ever seen in my life, which needed three other people (okay maybe not needed but it made a cute picture) to help carry it across the beach. I would definitely come here again and try that steeper lookout point, should my mobility improve. Otherwise there is always the sweet beach access trail. Plenty of parking can be found, and though we saw bathrooms on our way down to the beach when my friend tried their door handles they turned out to be locked.

We didn't have time to hike the whole thing today (it is 5.4 miles round trip), but we hiked out on this trail for about 20 minutes and then hiked about 20 minutes back, and we both thought it was well worth the time to do that. We saw wild irises along the trail, many beautiful trees of all shapes and sizes, more incredible ocean vistas, and a monarch butterfly! I personally quite love hiking trails that have arch-like overhangs of trees over parts of the trail. Happily, the beginning jaunt of this trail had several such arches of greenery. It is magical to be enclosed by trees on both sides of me *and* also overhead! Some stretches of this trail have somewhat steep elevation gain. Other sections of the trail were very muddy when we hiked this trail today, to the extent that our shoes could've sunk several inches in to mud if we weren't watching where we stepped. There was no one there except for us today! It is a week day morning, so this park may be far more crowded on the week-ends. But it was so peaceful to enjoy this place all to ourselves! Loved this hike and would do it again this trip if I had time. We went at a fast pace and it was…read moredoable for all ages 12 to 69. I was a little worried about the rope climb at the bottom to the beach but it was a breeze (I'm 67). The tide was out so we spent a lot of time on the rocks, looking at the tide pools, walking the beach and letting the 3 dogs run. We went during the week in June and had the beach to ourselves. The day was super windy but the trail and beach were blocked from most of it. The views from the trail are spectacular and so many wildflowers and mushrooms to see. Not a huge parking area so I could see where it might be tight on the weekends. Several of us were in flip flops but I would wear my hiking shoes if I was to go back.

Nice viewpoints and a little bit of something for everyone. We didn't really understand the path to see the bridge so we skipped that. The natural bridges were nice, but we didn't feel safe hiking down to them. Really beautiful corridor though!

My first thought was that it is more remote than I had for some reason assumed. I really appreciated the relatively large spans of almost no civilization and all nature. Second thought, the entire Oregon coast is stunning...the most beautiful coast line in the country in my humble opinion. Rugged, treed, full of wildlife, serene. Third note, the corridor did have the most rock formations as compared to other parts of our coast, very fun to admire, especially from the higher vantage points of the many, many viewpoints along the route. Overall, a stunning area...but let's be real...it's just another jaw-droppingly beautiful piece of a state overflowing with spectacular sights.

A quick glance at beaches not too far over the border showed Lone Ranch Beach as a quieter local favorite. Well signed turn off took us here right off the 101. There were only a few other cars. What a gorgeous, dramatic beach! Tons of driftwood, sea stacks and forest that comes right up to the water. Walking along here was a lovely, peaceful way to spend an afternoon on the coast. There were several picnic tables on the grassy area before the beach and it seems like a great place to spend the day if you're local. Very glad I found my way up here!

One of many beaches in Brookings OR…read more The beach is part of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor in Brookings OR, a little further drive down after crossing the CA/OR stateline. We turned in the parking lot but it was full, luckily, we found a spot (well, we kinda made our own spot) LoL! We attempted to walk down to the beach following a trail to the left but it was somewhat unpredictable and a little dangerous so we turned around. The path to the right has a better access to the beach but we didn't go. Instead we just took in the coastal views from atop and watched the crashing ocean waves hit the offshore rocks. The beach features many scenic sea stacks too. There is a picnic area at the site. February weather was exceptionally sunny, no rain in sight, but it was windy. Wish we had time to check out the tide pools but it was high tide when we went. Review #2525

Other admirers were friendly and respectful, allowing each other to get their pictures and have quiet moments admiring the view. Some decided to hike further down to go on top of the natural bridge, even though there are plenty of danger signs telling you not to.

These natural bridges are a testament to the power and beauty of nature…read more The Oregon coast is filled with some of the most amazing viewpoints and this one really shouldn't be missed. It's very short, about .5 miles and there's virtually no elevation. Parking is right off the highway. Some hike deeper into the forest and actually make their way on top of the bridges. Unfortunately some have also died doing so. Know your limits. There is a trail beyond the paved path and at some point it gets very steep and sketchy. This is where you should stop and turn around. It's best to enjoy these bridges from a distance and find much safer hikes to take which there are many of in this area. Happy hiking!

A small parking area at the end of a neighborhood street. It is always very busy and seems to draw…read morepeople who enjoy the view while sitting in their vehicles with the A/C or heater on and engine running. Despite this, the location is perfect for a quick stop at the ocean or mouth of the Smith River. It's about 10 steps down to the beach and offers great views of ocean & river. Huge flocks of pelicans and gulls rest on the beach along with loads of seals and sea lions. A great place for wildlife viewing!
