Genius. I'll have a packet of Polyfilla and some Gruyere please. Or something like that. My husband, who doesn't much care for Homebase (as indeed nor do I, although the Spend & Save card is quite good if you have to go) does like cheese, so it makes our depressingly regular sorties to HB more bearable. There is also another mobile unit selling hotdogs and a car cleaning service all in the Homebase carpark. You don't even have to go in the shop to have a fun day out.

Paint & perishable items are also expensive and not uncommon for them to have sat there for ages and be close to expiry. A lot of cheap imported products barely fit for purpose and gathering dust. Worst of all if a product stops working after a few days or weeks the manager will literally make every excuse not to give you your money back and if that doesn't work he has no problem insulting your integrity. We have been there on several occasions and never thought about how many people are returning things.. However after witnessing the way the manager spoke to a customer visiting the UK yesterday and trying to return a faulty electrical device within 14 days, I decided to write this review. I won't be returning and nor will any of my contractors. Be warned... don't rely on what they tell you. Try Fulham Road or Brompton Road hardware stores for better pricing, better quality and a normal customer service and returns policy.

Before the smoking ban they even were allowed to enter in with their light cigarettes - that is how easy going this place is. From the bottom to the top there are shelving with anything from nails, toolboxes, tubes, window handles etc. I once made my way there as my window screw broke. They had several versions of my broken example and I could close my window in a couple of hours again. That was a relieve. They also have more stock in the backrooms, therefore whatever you need, ask - they might have it. What I appreciate, even though there is a counter where you get served, you are allowed to have a look around. The service is very polite even when you only buy 4 screws.
We visited London with our 3 year old and had a day trip out of London planned. We booked a car but…read morediscovered they do not offer car seats. So we had a baby equipment delivery service/vendor lined up to have a far seat delivered to our hotel. Closer to our date, they informed me they were fully booked so that left us without any other option but to buy a car seat. I wasn't about to spend £££ on a luxury car seat (which is all we were finding in London) for one day use so I started googling and came across Argos. I browsed their site and saw the car seat that met our specifications which ended up being the same price as it would have been to rent from the vendor plus their delivery/pickup fees. We hate being THAT customer but we arrived 15 minutes before closing on the night before our planned day trip and we were able to purchase the car seat right then and there on their systems. Then walked a few steps over to their counter where they brought it over. We were in an out in 10 minutes. Service was fine although I realize a clueless customer rushing in so close to the end of your day might be slightly irritating. After use, we listed the car seat on Craigslist to anyone who wanted to pick up from us at our hotel lobby free of charge which worked out great since we didn't need to schlep the car seat to a local charity shop.

Lately I have been getting excited about the weather stations, the solar chargers, the clever international multi-adapters, the shower radios, the city pop-up cards, the wall-mounted CD players, the wind-up walkie talkies, the fair trade cotton sheets and so much more. I will admit that I have recently been suffering from a huge obsession with anything even remotely Japanese and this has obviously played a huge part in my love affair with Muji - but it's just so clever I doubt many people could resist. My point is that there seems to very little sense of direction in Muji, as you can tell from the somewhat blasé customers it seems to attract. It's too small to accommodate the higher-class department store shtick (that torch obviously being held by places like Fenwicks... etc). Having said this there is a good clean atmosphere here, and it can be quite fun to look around... I just don't really know what I'm looking for when I'm their.

The shelves seem busier and some of the Christmas gift ideas are really good. Who wouldn't enjoy a radio-controlled rat, or mini walkie-talkies with a 5km range? Small Christmas trees made of plastic circuit board catch my eye: you have to build them up yourself and feature LEDs for lights. Being a bit of an electronics geek I always find Maplin to be a good browse, though they are sometimes overpriced. But all the sale shelves in the Putney branch quickly put my mind at ease. A nice and inexpensive gift for a music lover is a box of blank CD-Rs that look like little records. There's also always something for mom, dad, little brother or sister. Maplin Putney always has knowledgeable staff on hand to field more technical questions too.
