My first time trying Trinidadian food and definitely won't be my last. Baby Dhal is a grab-and-go spot on Commercial, they have a few tables and chairs but it's mostly meant for a grab-and-go experience. Their food is very well priced and is pretty filling! They have a small menu but their food is AMAZING! You can choose veggie, chicken, lamb, oxtail, or beef and either make it buss it (roti with curry on the side) or buss it (turnover). We tried there veggie one one which came with chickpeas, spinach, and lentil. It was DELICIOUS! The texture was mushy but the flavours went so well together. The roti you get with buss up is flaky but melts in your mouth when you have it with the curries. The other one I really liked was the special spicy chicken curry, very flavourful! We also tried their Phololurie which were essentially dough balls that you can dip in tamarind sauce. I can't wait to come back here!! read more

I was curious about this place since I don't think I've tried Trinidadian food before. I got the veggie curry with buss-up. The plate includes aloo (potato), spinach, and chickpea (chana) curries with buss-up, a very flaky, buttery flatbread. I loved the texture of the buss-up and all of the curries were delicious. I got medium spice which had a kick but wasn't super hot, and I would definitely recommend getting this with some heat if you can handle it because I think a lot of the flavour came from the hot sauce. Very filling. The person who took my order was very nice, and was patient answering questions for some customers who came in after me. The food was also ready pretty quickly. Seating is pretty limited, with two large tables and a few bar seats. It seems like they do a lot of takeout and the food all comes in takeout containers, but the dine-in experience was pleasant thanks to the hospitality of the staff. read more

I am not even going to come off as saying I know what authentic food is, but I know good food and good vibes when I feel and taste them. My wife had this place all planned out for a quick pickup at lunch, it was lucky too as we were going toward the location and called, and oddly on this day they weren't busy... as I said, lucky, as from the sounds of it, and even Roy, the guy who answered the phone, usually it is a 30 minute wait... so on with the day. We called in for a vegetarian dhal puri roti and an order of the doubles, and while we were waiting the place had some good beats playing out of the speakers, and Roy was telling us some great suggestions of other Roti shops (not here of course... but in TO) and when our food came out it was just damn good, something that you can call comfort, something that was made with heart. This thing was hefty, as in the box had some weight, and the spices they used for the vegetarian filling were just as we ordered it, mild to medium spicy. Do not let this thing fool you, cause if you eat it all it may knock you out and put you on your behind, they give you a lot.. and you can tell they are using some good ingredients to boot. As I said, I am not familiar with this kind of food, but next was the doubles that we ordered, and it was a soft bubbly flat bread with curried chickpeas, and some other stuff they are putting in, and I had this while driving, and at every stop light I was nibbling at a bite. I am already ready to hit this place up again for some straight up meat selection but I love what I am eating here... and the awesome thing is that really shows how Vancouver is lacking in this culture's food. read more

Not many places to get this kind of food. I'm a 32 year downtown guy and when I'm jonesing for some serious Caribbean / Jamaican / West Indies....we'll let's say we all know the go-to best spots. So when a new kid on the block like Baby Dhal throws down - it better be fricken amazing against the small but mighty competition! Jk jk lol Anyways - what a beautiful meal we enjoyed last night, I had the curry roti roll a d the Mrs went straight for the ox tail - both cooked to perfection with lots of fresh spices and juicy tender meats. Well prepared and made with lots of love and care. I'm sprung to plow through their menu and try more of their choices. The TING is kind of expensive but that's nothing to worry about! But if you're new to it and the only other Caribbean food you've had is Jerk, this is not that. This is authentic trini food with roots in East India. Roti, curries and doubles (famous street food made of curried chickpeas wrapped in two "barra": the softest fried bread). If you love Indian food, you'll love it. Flavourful, tasty and just a lil spicy, and lots of vegetarian and vegan options. They also have an unbeatable selection of the most popular trini soft drinks many of which I've never seen outside of TnT. Very bland and overpriced, at least the vegetarian option I got. This is a very casual Indian/Trinidadian-style roti shop with vegetarian and vegan options. You can get all their items on either rice, in dhal puri, or bussup shut. The vegetable option with rice and dhal puri are both vegan, so I got the dhal puri. It was a whopping $17 plus tax. You get a sizeable wrap with a nice flaky pastry, but inside is just potato and chickpeas, with a smidgeon of spinach. It's tasty enough, but pretty bland and very carb-heavy with no real veggies. And for $17 plus tax, this is just not a good deal. You can get a much more satisfying, well-rounded roti at Indian Roti on cambie with actual vegetables and for several $ less. Go there for your rotis and steer clear of this place, at least for the veggie option. This was disappointing. read more

Newly opened Trinidadian restaurant! They definitely deserve their name, their dhalpuri roti is perfectly prepared, layered with seasoned dhal, soft enough to melt in your mouth but strong enough to hold all the curry! I grew up in Trinidad, lived there for 20 years and I'm telling you this place is the real deal. An old school roti shop, unpretentious and serving straight quality. We tried the shrimp roti, goat roti and doubles. Their pepper sauce is on point for all the dishes, the shrimp was super flavourful and the goat was nice and "fall off the bone" tender. The doubles was perfect texture, from the bara (outside) to the channa (inside). Service was exceptional! Place was packed, they were clearly busy but damn they were fast with orders, and were calm and friendly even as the store filled up. Must have been about 15 people but orders came out in 15-20 minutes which is amazing for a small restaurant in opening week. They also had ox tail and stew chicken, which I'll have to try next time. I definitely recommend this place if you are looking to have taste of Trinidad in Vancouver! read more

Yummm! The food is so so good, and it's evident because even at closing time, people kept coming in through the doors hoping to get whatever's left! We got the Stew Chicken, Curry Goat, and Curry Beef. It was all so so good. We were told that to secure the Oxtail or the abuse up shut Roti, you should call in early or at least go in early because it gets sold out quick!! This place is fantastic. Everything on the menu is delicious. If you order it spicy it's actually spicy. The bus it up shut roti is like a buttery book of pages in the best way possible. They have these drinks called tropical rhythm and I can't find anywhere else. It's Trinidadian curry at 100% flavour. The only draw back is the lack of seating inside. I was excited to see that the place that hosted Chef Bounty (rest in power!) had become another Caribbean spot. Today, in a hungry stupor, I put on my King of Takeout crown and wandered over to order from a new local business. Simple place with friendly, fast service, not too expensive. I ordered veggie with doubles, and noticed that conspicuously mine did not come with rice and beans though the person behind the counter said it would. That was confusing. The food itself was fine. Potatoes were creamy, spinach was spinach, chickpeas were mildly spiced. I was left wanting stronger flavours, honestly, and missing the absent rice and beans. The roti was delicious and had great texture. I feel like plant-based meats could be a delicious direction, and am glad I got to try this place out early in its journey! Words do not describe how good this place is. Walked here for Roti and was not disappointed. I got the chicken and my partner got beef. We also ordered two doubles because they sounded amazing. We were informed that they only had Bus up and not the wrapped Roti. If you read their social media they are currently having issues with their roti machine. We were told 30 minutes and we went for a walk on commercial drive while they prepared our food. It was rainy but the drive is just fun to walk (never a dull moment). Upon our return we picked up our bag of food and headed home to enjoy. Here's where it gets good. The doubles - incredible tamarind flavour, doughy pockets filled with chickpeas. I loved them so much I cannot describe fully but the texture and flavour was incredible. The roti - tender chicken, lots of gravy tasty potatoes and the flakiest softest roti to eat along side. If you're hungry you can eat the whole dish but if not you'll have leftovers for the next day. My partners beef was equally amazing with a darker gravy and incredible mouth watering flavours. I almost forgot the coleslaw which was so refreshing against all the flavours. So good! I will be back! This place is so authentic and I can't wait for their roti machine to be up and running too. I ordered take out chicken curry and asked for the Dhal Roti to be packed separate. I ordered mild and it definitely had a kick to it so beware when ordering the spice level as I am used to eating spicy but have cut back quite a bit lately. It was very flavorful, a smaller portion of chicken pieces with a heavier ratio of potato so for what you pay, bit higher in price but it tastes authentic and is certainly unique for Vancouver to have Caribbean food so would probably order take out again. I had big hopes for this place but unfortunately portions are very small and it's pretty tasteless food. I ordered curry shrimp and as they were out of curry shrimp rotis had to order just the shrimp curry with another type of roti on the side. Anyhow rice is not included with this usually, but they accidentally put some in my container. Glad they did as the portion was so small for $18???? Think they need to get some flavour in their curries. It curry it should have lots of flavour. It was pretty tasteless. I don't think a Trinni person or a Caribbean person would be very impressed with this food. As other reviewers say there is no flavour to it. I have to question the positive review of the guy claiming to be from Trinidad, it's gotta be a fake review as the food has no taste and the portions are so small. Look at the photo of my meal. Had the chicken roti and it was good, very authentic, however it had 2 or 3 small bones in it which ruined the experience for me. Had the shrimp curry and rice as well but it was far too salty.
