Managed a tricky laptop repair very professionally. Good communication throughtout the process.

Case: #37222 Where to begin. This shop used to be good about 8 or 9 years ago. They had transparent window behind main counter, you could see technicians actually do work and they were all highly qualified and very well run business. At that time they were the only place to be able to fix my MSI gaming laptop. Recently i went there to fix my different Lenovo Legion gaming laptop (overheating issues). They asked for nonrefundable €70. And that is fine as i was sure they be able to fix it. I had issues with laptop sometimes turning on and sometimes not turning on. Hard reset with power button helped it to turn on sometimes. Anyway after their so called diagnostics they told me this laptop is totally fried and will not be able to work again. Apparently GPU was damaged beyond repair and needed new motherboard I was very confused as I was sure it was not the case. I had it turn on and work just day prior without any issues and thermals were fine with NVIDIA GPU performing to the fullest without any frame drops or anything. Came back home and saw that my battery was not working. I had no problem with battery, so i opened the back and saw they didn't connect the connector of the battery to the main board. I connected it back. Then i realized they used electric screwdriver to screw back the main thermal cover, which is big no no. I was not even able to unscrew the screws because they were so tightly screwed back (broke tip of a screw). I called them and asked them why they used screwed the thermal cover so tight. They said they did it so that maybe connection of pins between GPU and motherboard can fix problem. I was shocked. everyone knows that thermal cover should be gently screwed back with correct order of the screws with few turns every time ( my case 1-6). And they said technician maybe just forgot to plug back the battery to motherboard. Oh and by the way, after i plugged back laptop, it worked again, it turned on. I am not saying it is totally working now, but their assessment of this laptop never be able work again and i need new motherboard was false. Anyway, i blame the ownership of this place for hiring bunch of college kids who are not familiar and are not battle tested to do tasks which are more complicated. They probably did not wanted pay extra for their more skilled technicians and they left the company so they hired young college graduates who probably just use ChatGPT to fix an issue with laptop. Dave in their Donnybrook branch brought my MacBook back to PWO after I thought I'd have to abandon it. Took a while but got a better result than I ever expected. Also, as he had fitted a new battery recently, all I paid was the €70 basic fee, although he worked on it for days. Would use them again. read more

I had left my laptop into Back From the Future for an audio issue and they were waiting on a part to resolve the problem. The guy, I forgot to ask his name was as 'beyond the call of duty' helpful as ever. It was a Saturday afternoon when I called, and I was due to start an online course the following Monday. He solved my predicament straight away by giving me a good quality headset free of charge. This allows me to stop the panic and begin my online course, all tech worries allayed. I can understand that an independent shop can't quite compete with chain stores on price, but then they should at least offer outstanding service or something! I'm not that great with computers so if there is a problem- however small- I'll go and ask someone for help... but the staff in here weren't too nice when I asked them a few questions and it wasn't like they were particularly busy. This electronics and computer gear store also does laptop repairs. Score. But it's all really ungodly expensive. Fail. I wouldn't suggest shopping here, because prices are just ridiculous. Go online and you'll find everything they sell here 75% cheaper. But if you seriously need one thing for your computer and cannot wait for it to be shipped to you this is a good spot. And I am sure they do a great job fixing computers. One other thing I thought was annoying was that pretty much all of the merchandise was in glass cases. He offered to fix it for 200 euros and that I wouldnt have it back until a week later. I agreed even though i needed it for work. but i had a thought and went back to coln and asked how much would it be to put in another battery. he told me but then he came up with a deal that he would give me a computer and he would take my gaming computer I thought about it and agreed with him so he gave me a computer within a few days it didnt work. it came up with error all the time so I brought it down and this time Darius was there, He DIDNT BELIEVE ME THAT I BOUGHT IT THERE AND SAID THERE WAS NO STICKER. HE CALLED ME A LIAR.. so I proved to him that I had bought it there. I was really annoyed he offered me no apology. so finally he gave me another computer. I asked him if it was refurbished ,He ignored the question and proceeded to give me my new computer, so then the computer STOPPED WORKING AGAIN.. This time it was the mouse pad that didnt rightclick. HE ACCUSED ME OF DOING THAT ON PURPOSE.. Also the mouse pad was worn down cause it had been used a lot. I was also told that my computer would last over 10 years. Had a bad experience here returning an item. Had originally emailed re returning this item for refund and got a reply -no problem. So far so good - until i actually went into the shop and that 'nice guy' persona disappeared. In fact the owner became quite nasty. I told him I didn't want to go into why I was returning the item as I had done that by email. He accused me of having an 'attitude' and told me I must have something going on in my life. Couldn't believe what I was hearing! He then told me I had to go away for an hour while he 'checked' the product. while I felt he was just being petty I agreed to come back and was exiting the shop when I heard him remark to another customer with a sneer that you had to 'teach some people a lesson' by this time my husband who was waiting for me at the rear of the shop was giving him a very hard stare due to his disgraceful attitude. When he realised I actually had a man accompanying me he put out a hand and said 'sorry' to my husband - not to me. As I expected he was no where to be seen when we went back for the refund. The cord to my laptop blew up the other day in spectacular fashion. (maybe it saw my Kurt Cobain scribbles on my ancient pencil case next to it... "It's better to burn out than fade away" etc etc... ah teenage angst...) Anyway, not wanting to wait for one to be posted from an Ebay site, I checked my aul Yelp app and called the closest place to me in town which happened to be Back from the Future. The conversation went like this; "Hi there, do you have laptop chargers?" "Do we hell!!" (in highly exciteable voice) "Great! The only thing though is it's a really random type..." "I've got laptops comin outa my ears! Get down here, we'll sort ya out no bother!" And sort me out they did! They had the very one I needed. No waiting around, centrally located, and definitely a big bonus for attitude. I also asked them about another product which I was trying to source. They took my number, called around for me, called me a few hours later, and said that they could order it in. Now the one thing I will agree with previous emails on, is the price. The charger cost me €40. Not cheap. I haven't checked how much it was online as really didn't want to put myself through the pain.... But customer service wins out for me regardless. So I managed to refrain from singing 'reunited and it feels so good' out loud in the shop, but I totally sang it in my head. You see one faithful Sunday evening some weeks ago, I was working frantically on a presentation to be given in Brussels the next day. I'm going to blame this franticness on why I effectively upended a whole glass of barley water into my work macbook. So I had a little nervous breakdown and checked the internets for what I should do. The internets told me that I had killed it, and it was now a very expensive doorstop, but if I wanted to cover it in rice and put it in the hotpress for three days, I could try. I tried. It did not help. Thankfully I'm kind of whiney and I bemoaned this horror to everyone I came into contact with, until someone told me that the whole rice thing wasn't what you should do, but rather go to a repair shop as soon as possible. On the third rice/hotpress day I still had no joy, so I finally took that advice and rang these dudes. They told me that the whole rice thing was not a good idea at all as it encourages plant growth inside your laptop. He told me the sooner they get it, the greater chance that they can do something, and that the cost varied depending on the damage. But they were hopeful - and told me that it probably could be resuscitated (you were wrong, internets!), so I packed it up and brought it to them. You pay a 50 euro deposit and then one of their technicians will take a look and see what damage you've done and what it will cost to repair. Unfortunately I had killed almost every bit of it so I had a bit of a heart-stopping moment when they rang me with the estimate. My total was 550 euro. This is still quite a bit cheaper than buying a new mac. And it was not totally dead! hurrah (ish). My other little consolation is that if you check into the store with the yelp app you get a 10% discount on laptop repair. So yelp saved me 50 euro! They were waiting for some parts for some time (I think you can pay more if your need is urgent, but I was happy to wait) so I think they had it for about 6 weeks. They texted me when it was ready to pick up. The two brothers who run the place Colin and Wesley are top blokes who go out of their way to help! I recently went in for a battery case for iPhone and they recommended a great case which was much better value than the Mophie I had broken a week before when I dropped it. They are fully kitted out to fix macs and pcs and gave me some great advice about resurrecting my old Mac and giving it a power boost and new lease of life which I shall be doing with them very soon! That and the fact they love the Back to the Future Films as much as I do is awesome as well! read more

Just came here to buy a refurbished apple mac book air, they had 6 different models on display, complete with labels and displaying specs and prices. We decided on which one we wanted to buy and said we would take it, only to be told the price displayed was a "mistake" and instead of being €799.00 it was actually €950.00!. If you have 6 models on display and manage to get the price on one of them wrong, I think that's pretty poor service/organisation. read more

They lost my hard drive, and have no record of taking it. That's 1TB of photos, videos, backups and work down the drain. Then they wouldn't return my MacBook until I coughed up an extra 30 euro (after an initial 50 euro), even though they didn't fix it. I brought my computer here to be fixed (it kept crashing) as they quoted a cheaper price than Right Click. At first the problem was only going to take a couple of days to fix, but days turned into a week, which turned into several weeks. Right Click had initially diagnosed my computer as having Hard Drive and RAM failure, saying these had to be replaced. Back from The Future deduced that my Motherboard was slowly damaging all the components in my computer and that I needed a whole new PC. Fine. That was ok, and they assured me that everything would be replaced like for like. My original PC had a 250GB Hard Drive, 2GB RAM and a very very expensive graphics card as it had previously been used by one of my brothers who was big into gaming. Back from the Future, without my knowing, replaced my parts with a 75GB Hard Drive, 1GB RAM, and said the graphics card was the same. Confusingly, I was also told my original Motherboard had been put back in(?). I blindly returned home with my 'new' PC and tried to re-install everything as it had been on my old PC, finding that suddenly I was only left with 20GB space left! (Yes, I had 55GB of storage which is quite a lot, but still!) It didn't end there - I had my brothers check the specs and it turns out that I now only have 1GB RAM and actually - which surprised me the most - no graphics card at all! It had been swiped! So all the time I wondered why game quality was awful and my PC was unbelievably slow it was actually because I was using only the rubbish graphics chip that comes with the motherboard! On top of this, I asked my brother how to change the PC's 'registered' name of MATRIXBK to my own name, as my last PC had been. He said it was not possible as the copy of Windows I had been given seemed to be 'cracked'. Interesting that a trading company cannot provide their customers with legitimate programs.. Don't shop here. The service here was also awful. Nobody ever returns messages or calls. If there was an Irish Watchdog program I'd be the first to submit my complaints! Wow, what Character. As a tourist in Dublin, my plug adapter broke and I needed a new unit to charge my phone while in Ireland for the week. I stopped by the shop and they were closed, however they guys opened the door and asked if they could help. I explained what was going on and they quickly gave me an adapter and told me if it worked I could swing back later in the week and pay them. If it didn't work... no worries. Excellent service. Went to this shop to fix the broken screen for iPhone 6. Very good & friendly service, phone fixed within couple of hours and most importantly cheap, so can't complain. You can see the difference: screen is little bit darker (even when I set brightness to max) and sticks out a little bit,but overall can fault it -does the job! Highly recommend it! read more

I dropped my laptop in for repair, paying the (quite high) fixed fee for an assessment (which I was OK with as I've bad bad experiences with people offering free assessments up front just to hook you in). I painstakingly explained to the guy, as I foresaw potential misunderstandings, that it was a Linux laptop that wouldn't boot. I also told him that I had uninstalled and reinstalled the operating system multiple times. I stressed to him that it was not a Windows laptop (as these would be the most common). I then sent a follow-up email re-iterating this. They took their time with the assessment, and eventually came back to me offering to charge me over double what I'd already paid to "re-install Windows" (something I had already stressed multiple times wasn't something I wanted). Eventually got a friend of a friend to look at it, who quickly diagnosed the issue, which turned out to be very easy to fix once found, and had absolutely nothing to do with reinstalling Windows. These guys don't know what they're doing, but more importantly they either have very poor internal communication, or they seem intent on just not listening to their customers. To add to this, this week they've sent out an unsolicited email to (presumably) all of their past customers spreading fear and paranoia over ransomware attacks in a very obvious attempt to drum up more business, offering some very bad or vague advice and finishing up with an offer of a "full audit of your machine for only €80 including vat". This is a morally reprehensible sales tactic. Avoid! read more

Was quoted €40 to transfer data from broken laptop to an external drive. When I arrived at the shop in George's street they told me the price was €50. They did this to keep my deposit in my opinion. I thought it was very unfair and essentially against business law and ethics. I was too tired to fight it at 6pm but I urge the next person to be more vigilant. The sale of goods and supply of services acts from 1980 forbid this type of practice. I should have fought for my €10 and given it to charity! Tipping my laptop repair technician is not an option. read more

great service, my macbook pro was breaking down, I brought it in to be looked at, I was told straight away what was wrong, everything was explained to me in plain english, I given a very competitive price (I phoned around!).it was fitted with all new hardware all my files cloned and programs saved , Ready within a week and running like new! DON'T GO THERE, BAD SERVICE AND OFFENSIVE!! You don't know anything, they are the experts. If you say different they'll shut you up and even kick you out of the shop!! Just went there because my mac's fan is running constantly high since I got some hardware from them. I will never buy any thing from this store again. Bought a laptop from them which was sold with 4 GB of ram and when I looked at it later in system configuration found out there was only 2 GB of ram. I have been a customer to the Dun Laoghaire branch for years and it was previously a reliable retailer. Beware of buying second hand laptops. Firstly, I was not sold the laptop we had arranged on and I was given a damaged version of the one i had seen in the shop. I returned and the manager exchanged it for the laptop agreed upon. Only it crashed the very same day and I lost the work! I returned, once again, and the manager was unduly rude, unhelpful and revealed himself to be highly unreliable on the matter of selling second hand laptops which are for him a mere profit making exploit. read more

My mac laptop decided to freeze one day. The screen was lit up, but there was no picture on it at all. So I decided to bring it to Back From The Future. I went in, and the first guy I was talking to seemed alright. He said that since the screen was lighting up, it was turning on and off ok, and that he could hear the hard drive trying to work, it was probably just something minor. Then another man came up to have a look at it. He seemed like the manager, or someone with more authority. He was, without question, the most annoying man I have ever met. I think that he has been on Irish tv a few times, and he was clearly more interested in promoting himself as a 'celebrity' rather than helping a customer. He started joking, saying things like 'well you never know until you open the machine up how much it is going to cost'... I would have thought that a trained professional who is in a managerial position in a job would be able to guestimate. I told him that I understood that, but as I was on a budget, I asked that if the job was going to take more work than was told to me, that I would like to get a phonecall about it, and he agreed to this. He gave me a figure of what it might cost, and even though it was a little steep, I said that it was ok if the computer got fixed. A few days later, I got a call telling me that my laptop was fixed and ready for collection. I asked how much I owed them, and they said DOUBLE the price that I had been quoted. Now, I had a receipt from when I dropped it in, and it specifically says 'customer is to be called if the repair work will exceed quoted price'. I was furious. When I went in to collect it, I said that it was outrageous that I was quoted one price, and now they are charging me another. They said that they could erase all of the work that they did and hand it back to me, but then that would mean that absolutely all of my data would be erased too, with no chance of getting it back. Essentially they were holding my laptop to ransom. And they didn't even care. There was no hint of an apology, nothing. So what could I do, but I had to pay it. I have never been treated with so much disrespect, discourtesy, and rudeness towards me in my whole life. All I can say, is NEVER, EVER GO TO THIS SHOP!! they are pirates. read more

The staff were very helpful, and I had my laptop back the very next day. I was pretty happy with the price too compared to what I was anticipating. True it's not the cheapest place in the world but I prefer paying a little extra to have the peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong I can go back. I have bought a couple of laptops there for my company and will continue to as staff are always there to help when I have questions. They have done some repairs there too which have been good. It is highly rocommended to look for better repair shops as this one's price is over the top, let alone their bad service. The refundable deposit €50 policy makes people think twice before dealing with them. Speaking out of experience, their diagnosis was utterly useless. In other words, I gave them €50 for nothing. The second time was the last straw; I was assured that my device needs a new gpu and it'll be replaced with €400 euros. After that, it was the cpu not the gpu that needed a replacement. I have up on the cpu, at that point I wanted my files to be extracted but they didn't have the expertise to do it and need to contact with another company that is more capable and said they'll contact me but they didn't. Found them to be absolutely useless.. Guy who appears on "ireland am" every now and again charged me €50 deposit to just have a look at my laptop only to later say that it was unrepairable... He then informed me that i would not get any of my €50 back even though he could not fix it... funnily enough i brought it somewhere else who managed to fix it immediately and didnt charge me in the first place to just look at it. First time I went there they repaired my laptop but I had to come back to the shop about 4 times after because job wasn't done properly. Second time it was so stressful that I just don't recommend it to anybody. They changed their staff and it's much worse now. My computer had one application not working properly ( the shop installed it few months earlier ). It's Apache open office. They told me that the whole system has to be reinstalled. I was told that it will be done the next day. 4 days later I was told that my computer stopped working!!! They were going to reinstalled it to its initial stage, so I went to get it and I was told I had to wait few days. The customer service was absolutely rude. On the phone I asked Marius to write for me what was done with the computer, he said " fine but you will have to pay 60 euros and so you know if you will take this to the other shop ( I told him I will ) they will know about not legal programs in your computer ( the illegal programs were installed in the back to the future ). I have deadlines, I need my computer and I personally felt like the guy who was working there treating me like a total idiot. Please don't go there. read more
