Backus Hospital - as it says in plain English KIDNAPPING! - Hospitals Near Me - Norwich, Connecticut

Short version: Backus missed a concussion and a broken elbow on a visit in October where I was brought in by ambulance after a fall leaving work. The concussion they missed was severe enough that I have post concussion syndrome, and have not yet been able to return to work, and will not be for at least several more months. Long version: I was seen in the Backus ER in October of 2024 for a fall. They did a head CT and hand, wrist, and elbow X-rays. After 3 hours I was discharged with a diagnosis of a broken nose and a sprained wrist. No mention of concussion was made, not even what signs to look out for. The concussion and broken elbow were picked up after visits later that day and two days later to a different ER. Apparently I was coherent at Backus, but I have no memory of arriving there or ever seeing the doctor. I remember a few things from the visit, but all in all I have almost 3 hours of amnesia. But being "alert and oriented" even if sounding disoriented (at least according to my family) and having a CT without any obvious defects (other than the broken nose) meant I didn't have a TBI. If you know anything about TBIs and concussions, clean CTs mean nothing. To be fair, the formal read of the arm X-ray did notice the elbow fracture, but for some reason, no one bothered to notify me of this. This is the absolute WORST hospital you can go to in Norwich. They take forever, and give little to no care when u come here to be seen. Even when they are busy the nurses are always chatting it up. They SUCK at giving Iv's always miss the vein and then start fishing for it. They truly will hire ANYBODY nowadays if I could rate this hospital negative 10 starts I would. Came in for an outpatient procedure at the Endoscopy department. It was easy to find the location with phone call instructions I got. Registration desk was quick and pleasant. Lori, Kathy and Susan went above and beyond taking care of me. Lori did my intake and was patient and extremely knowledgeable of her department. She explained and provided me with so much information. She walked me through the entire procedure and made me feel like I was in great hands. Susan did my IV line and got it done smoothly and in one try. Kathy took care of me during and after the procedure. At all times I felt I was in great hands. I have to say it was my first time at Backus and I was very happy with their services. read more

If I could give a half start I would. This place is disgusting and only after your money. I fell, broke a rib and was told to go to the ER to get a cat scan. While at the ER they tried to give me narcotics even though I said I was able to manage the pain with over the counter pain relievers. They tried to perform a blood work up even though it was clear what was wrong with me. When they couldn't tell me the cost of the cat scan I left. Going to the ER, receiving 4 pills and they charged me $2,574.01. I will never go back to that hospital unless I spewing blood and going to die. And even at that point I may assess if I would make it to another hospital. read more

Terrible service! I took my aunt here when she was in extreme pain and couldn't walk. We put in the hallway of the emergency center and left there all while my aunt was screaming and crying in pain and the nurses and doctors did nothing but walked right past her. I went there In severe pain due to my lung disease bronchiectasis. I am also immune compromised...a critical care patient. The wait just to get in was hours....then when they called me back I was horrified. People lined along the sides of both walls in the hallway on stretchers, they put me in a corner of a room with a lot of very sick people who were vomiting, crying and I told the nurse how a common cold could kill me because I have no platelets left to fight anything off. She was such a nasty rude nurse, I said I'm leaving I can't be in here....she said fine. I called my CC doctors they had me go elsewhere and within 45 minutes they found the issue and had me stable. NEVER will I go there again. I would rather die at home than ever go back to that place. It's a filthy disgusting place and no one was wearing a mask but myself. I went for emergency medication assistance (I couldn't get a hold of my prescriber for over a week) on Saturday 4/1/23 around 11:30 pm and the behavioral nursing staff was forceful, condescending, judgmental and unkind. I went there for help, but left there as quickly as I could. I felt much worse after the treatment I received from the female behavioral nursing staff. If you have the option, do not go to Backus for mental health assistance. Atrocious behavior by nursing staff who refused to inform my husband of my whereabouts as I could not advocate for myself at the time. The visit caused myself and my family much distress. I cannot stress this enough, you will not be met there with kindness, even on the worst day of your life. I was absolutely humiliated. Treated like an animal. read more

My care was friendly and very professional by receptionist, intake techs, the MD, and check out. I felt that the level of knowledge here was top level based on the quality of questions asked about my particular issue (urinary), the review of my tests, the straight talk and relevant information I received. Overall, I am very satisfied with results of this consultation at Backus Hospital, which stems from my need for a second opinion. I recently had to have emergency spinal surgery my surgeon and his team could not have been more excellent doing the procedures along with the after care post op the doctors and nursing staff were caring and were available 24 -7 after coming home i received numerous calls checking up on me .I have not seen this quality of care in a very long time .I sincerley want to thank everyone involved from security to hospital services for my care . I was asked to pick up one of our Residents at the E.R. recently, I was told the resident would be ready, without entering the hospital. That didn't happen. I went into the ER waiting area, the Secretary called into the ER and then invited me to go into the ER to pick the resident up. I this point i refused and asked them to bring him out. i had to prompt the Secretary 4 times in an hour and a half to bring him out! Many people at that time were ushered in to pick up loved ones. I was thinking we have a huge FLU epidemic, and they are not keeping people safe! I am 65 years old and did not want to be there, But you would think a Hospital would be a lot more cautious on peoples safety ! read more

Our son had pneumonia and was sent from Backus to Yaleby helicopter, which we never had any say in. We had platinum level UHC insurance. UHC covered about 25k of the cost for the 15 minute helicopter ride. Now Med Trans Corp is harassing us, sending us letters and calling us to try and balance bill us for the amount that UHC didn't cover because they said it was not a reasonable charge. Med Trans refuses to acknowledge receipt of any cease and desist letters and now they even called us during the holiday sand sent us additional letters before Christmas. Our son is disabled and we have enough bills as is! The nurse said he thought the hospital would handle the billing since it was hospital to hospital. read more

I visited the ER yesterday. I had an issue with an acute Asthma Attack. The ER was great. They checked me in quickly and within minutes I was being seen by Dr Holden who immediately assessed my condition and ordered tests to better diagnose. The nursing staff Angie and Emma were so attentive, gentle and kind. I felt well cared for. Later Dr. Bennett completed the review and was also so thorough and caring. I would give it 5 stars but the facilities at Backus are dated and you could see dust in the Air Handlers in the ceiling. Probably not the best for an Asthmatic. I was scheduled for a priority MRI today. I arrived early, presented my ID and insurance card and was told that I could not receive the services promised because there was no 'order number' and that the office responsible for that was closed. I pre-screened on Thursday and was assured that everything was in order. Now I am going to continue to be in pain, have to reschedule and MRI - somewhere else - and any diagnosis and treatment of my issue is postponed due to the unprofessional practices of this piece of shit hospital. I've given better treatment to grunts in the field when I was an infantry medic. I am looking forward to tearing my way through their 'patient advocacy' people tomorrow....and I am sure that they will fail to take responsibility for their incompetence and offer any manner of reasonable accommodations for their unprofessional conduct. I plan on contacting the State and filing formal complaints immediately. Avoid this hospital - if they can't get a simple MRI right, do you want them doing surgery on you? read more

Definitely not fun to have to go the emergency room, especially when not in your own town. A friend drove me to Backus on the recommendation of an EMT at Foxwoods Casino, and as promised by her, the staff was amazing. I am totally terrified of hospitals, doctors, needles, even the blood pressure machine. Everyone I encountered at Backus was really kind and patient with my anxieties, and tried really hard to make due under the circumstances. Also, all of the nurses there were super hot. would give zero stars!!! this mental health department can discharge patients based claims of another patient. how do you follow someone out of the door that everyone uses for an exit to go to break? you do realize it is the same door that has always been used so the fact that someone's feelings are hurt and they complain about what they misunderstood can stop another patients treatment says this place practices discrimination and case bias. how do you do not have a policy or procedure that is adhered to in such instances and sees fit to prescribe medication and then not care for who they prescribe medication to. no forms filled out just someone misunderstood words then moved to ridicule and judge, then halt a patients care on someone's hurt feelings! a joke!!!! this place is not a group setting it is favoritism and bias so much for everyone's needs being met and care for mental health is situational. read more

Over the years they only saved my wife's life TWICE. Over 8 ER visits, dozens of Staff, Drs., Nurses, Techs, etc. I only ran into 1 Dr. that had a crappy bedside manner and seemed jaded; but when she was proven wrong by bloodwork results, her attitude changed. This place is callous, to the degree that I've never experienced. I was a patient of a doctor who had prescribed me thyroid medication. She left, and I continued to get my refills from Walmart. Unbeknowst to me, my doctor had ended the refills after a year. It makes sense, I understand that they'd want fresh blood work, but I was now high and dry without my daily medication. I explained how I was going to need time to find a doctor, schedule an appt., and get blood work done, and requested one more refill to tide me over, as this process would take at least a week or two, and I was scared to go that long with my daily thyroid medication. They kept telling me that it was my fault, that I should've found a new doctor already, that it wasn't their problem, etc. They were content to leave me high and dry, and only because the pharmacy at Walmart in Lisbon, took sympathy on my plight, was I able to get a 5-day supply, and had to scramble to find a doctor. As a result, I have to miss a day of work, to oblige the busy doctor's schedule. I wouldn't expect this type of customer service from any type of business, let alone one that is supposed to tend to peoples' health. I don't write YELP reviews, I don't care about most of my consumer experiences. But if I'm able to stop one person from dealing with these SOB's, my effort is warranted. read more

I suffer from chronic asthma and in the last 3 years i have faced death twice in a hospital. I have had multiple visits to many ER's but none worse than Backus. I arrived in an ambulance barely able to breath an upon arrival was quickly shoved in a room and ignored for 1hr. There were points I pressed the help button frantically and no one came for a while and in many cases I would be dead had this happen. Not sure if it was because of my attire or skin color but I have never been ignored in a relatively empty slow hospital in this manner. I strongly urge anyone seeking medical care to find and alternative to this cold unprofessional and uncaring facility. read more

Worst hospital experience ever. My son had a serious accident where he hit his face. He lost a lot of blood and was in shock when I brought him in. The doc refused to listen to me, refused to call a plastic surgeon for a consult and didn't even take an X-ray. I was told they could give him a few stitches for the cut on the outside, or "take my chances somewhere else". They were extremely rude and condescending, inferring I had no idea what I was talking about. I was forced to accept their substandard care, and a few days later the swelling had gone over the stitches. Got him into an ENT, and he needed a full reconstruction on his nose as the bones were shattered and the cartilage was torn to pieces. Now he's permanently scarred. So I guess I was not hysterical, you idiots. Don't trust these guys to do due diligence or provide proper care at all. If things don't seem right, they probably aren't. read more

My friend is currently pregnant and having chest pains to the point where she litterally stops breathing and they said they would get her in when they have a bed ready. After having surgery at Backus hospital I was pleasantly suprised by the caring nurses and staff. I had Tony and Rebecca on night shift who saw to my every need without my asking. I was terribly dry from being intubated in surgery and I never was without a drink. The staff at Backus was one of the most caring I have seen in a long time..It was nice to see people taking pride in their job and working together to make an unpleasant situation more bearable Thank You for making my stay memorable and less scary read more

My fiancé passed out on a job and ended up being ambulanced to the ER. Because he has a heart condition and takes atenolol they were insistent it was due to that. They called his cardiologist who told them to admit him and did nothing else, oh except DISCHARGE him less than 2 hours later. Thankfully I'm smart enough to not trust anyone who works as Backus. I had him follow up with his primary who ordered a CT scan which showed he has a cyst on his BRAIN! had the staff at the ER done their job they would have gotten him a CT scan when he was there! Not to mention they mis-diagnosed my appendicitis as round ligament pain when I was 26 weeks pregnant with my son 10 years ago! I guess some things never change! read more

January 15, 2016 To whom this may concern: Please consider this a formal complaint about Dr. Thomas Cherry. I am Fatima Perez and I am a patient of Dr. Cherry. I suffer from Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare genetic inherited skin disease caused by a defect in the body's ability to repair DNA cells damaged by ultraviolet rays and some artificial lights. This condition has caused the growth of numerous skin cancers, and as a result I have numerous scars and additionally I have lost my eyesight. Unfortunately, I must frequently visit specialty doctors. I am writing to you because I am probably not the first one and I hope two or three complaints like this will have consequences. I want Dr. Cherry to know that I will not permit any medical professional to treat patients with disrespect. I have to let the hospital staff know about his horrible treatment toward his patients. I hope there is someone at the hospital who will ask him why he has done this to me. In April 16, 2015, I had multiple surgeries on my right leg and my left arm to remove skin cancers. A few days after the surgery, Dr. Cherry came to my room to remove the bandage from my arm and he started to roughly remove the bandage although he knew that my skin is very sensitive. I told him, "Please remember that my skin is very sensitive and be careful taking off the bandage." He ignored me and pulled the bandage off roughly causing the skin graft to rip. My arm was bleeding a lot. Crying in pain, I reacted frantically and told him, "Look what you have done! You have damaged the surgery. How would you like to have surgery and then have your doctor do something like this to you?" He nonchalantly replied, "Ooh that's nothing, it will heal up." I told him, "Yes, right. Meanwhile I am the one suffering, now it will take a longer time to heal. You are such an insensible doctor and human being, you don't care the pain I am going through; you have caused me and extra pain and suffering that I don't need. What kind of doctor are you?" During that discussion, blood was still running down my arm and he did not even have the kindness to wipe it up. I felt so hurt and so helpless in the hands of such an insensitive doctor. He was supposed to help me but instead he treated me rudely with no sense of urgency or care towards my needs. Last November, I was diagnosed with another skin cancer on my right leg and my dermatologist made an appointment for another visit with Dr. Cherry. I told her that I did not want to go back to see him because of the way he treated me during my last surgery in April. She said there are not many plastic surgeons available in the region that can take my state insurance. This last January 6, I went to my appointment with Dr. Cherry. When he came into the examination room, he said, "You are back again," I replied, "Yes, unfortunately, I am back." After discussing my lesion and his plan for surgery, he said to me with a bad tone in his voice, "I am not sure that I will be able to remove all of that cancer to you 100," In shock, I replied to him, "what??! What are you saying? Do you mean that whatever cancer you leave behind will grow back and probably in 6 months or a year later I have to come back to you to go through another painful surgery again?. Why don't you do a mohs micrographic surgery to me? And why do you have to take me to a surgery room exposing me to general anesthesia to take care of such a small lesion that it can be done here at your office with just a numbing medication"? He then replied with a negative tone of voice, "you do not need that kind of surgery. And if you don't like what I am saying to you, GO to another doctor!" It really hurt me so much to hear that, if I would be able to see, I would stand up, leave the room, and say to him, thank you and goodbye. I had a surgery scheduled on January 28 with him, but of course, I canceled it because I don't want anything to do with such a horrible doctor with no heart neither care toward his patients. It will be a great satisfaction for me to know the institution will not allow something like this to happen and the hospital staff cares when getting patient complaints about horrible treatment like this. The hospital itself is a great facility but the accounts receivable is absolutely horrible. Trying to get an itemized statement because their statement did not match what our insurance was billed and paid after the coordination of benefits. On the advise if our insurance carrier they said do not pay until you receive an itemized statement. Called to speak with the office manager. No call returned. Called patient experience no call returned. Called and left a message for David Whitehead president/CEO call not returned. read more

My Doctor had requested an ultrasound in "the next week or 2". 3 weeks later I receive a written appointment in the mail fort this procedure for approximately 5 weeks after the Doctor visit. A few days before my scheduled appointment I receive a phone call confirming my appointment with a new earlier time. They had rescheduled my ultrasound appointment time without checking with me and this was very inconsiderate and inconvenient for me.
