I had the pleasure of dropping in on a Friday 6:30 AM Judo class. I reached out to the Baem BJJ instagram account and received a response promptly. The Judo program is a bit separate from the other programs so I was directed to reach out via phone to the coach of the Judo class. Highly recommend!!! One of the best training environments I have had the pleasure of experiencing. If you're living in the East Bay (or the Bay at large) and want to train BJJ (as hobby, self defense, or to compete) in a top notch academy, with a high level of instruction, and a REALLY great culture ... this school is a no-brainer, just take a trial class and I think you'll understand. I am fairly new to BJJ, and this was the first official school I had trained at. I was nervous and a bit intimidated at first. But after my first class, I left feeling really grateful for the experience. There's a mix of levels. The higher belt students are really skilled, and the best part is .. they are super friendly, patient, and willing to help you get better. Everyone is respectful of each other and you definitely feel safe rolling. I think that's a testament to Denny (head coach) and the rest of the instructors. As a teacher myself, I'm really aware of people's teaching styles and philosophies. I am really inspired by Denny's approach, and it suited me. You go deep, and also have plenty of scenarios to get the concepts and techniques into the body. Each teacher has their own approach, so taking different classes throughout the week, you get a well rounded learning experience. As someone who gets very 'nerdy' about movement practices, I liked the diversity of approach available at the academy. Again, couldn't recommend this school more. Just try it out! Okay writing this from personally personal experience and for my absolute love for this gym. I got into Jiu Jitsu over a year and a half ago and while the gym I was going to was great, I found that I wasn't learning much and the environment just wasn't for me, especially as a first timer getting into a contact sport. I gave it my all but I could not keep up and I kept getting injured and I just felt like I could not fit in, no matter how much I tried. Fast forward to half a year later, I moved to the Fremont area and stumbled upon Baem Jiu Jitsu!! Ironically, it was the stellar google reviews that led me to this place (SO JUST FYI). I had my first trial day and the gym was so welcoming and also so homey, there were way less people which I loved since I easily became intimidated at my last gym and there was also DENNEY. If you've ever been in any sports at all throughout your life, you KNOW that a coach can either make or break your love for the sport. I went in expecting to be easily intimidated and also ignored (since I was still only a white belt with no knowledge) and Denney was the GREATEST. You know those people in life who have found their "niches" and make it their entire personality to demonstrate not only how much more they know about it than anyone else but they also need you to take it as seriously as life or death or else you're just not good or committed enough? That is not Denney... The man is an insanely knowledgeable and talented BJJ black belt MASTER but if you take one of his classes, you would instantly realize that he values it for you as a student because of the confidence and real world skills it gives you in life. He isn't obsessed with the fact that you need to compete or how well you can nail a technique or how many wins you've had, he simply wants you to think critically and really see Jiu Jitsu as a means of being able to figure tough stuff out and how to get out of messy situations. Honestly I see BJJ as an entirely different sport than I did when I started and because of Denney, I've grown to love and be just as obsessed with the sport because of his passion and his classes. Trust me when I tell you, you NEVER want to miss one of Denney's classes, they're so fun, dynamic, and I swear you learn something entirely mind blowing each time you take his class. On top of that, he's one of the most genuine and kind hearted people I've met in this crazy intimidating sport. I even competed in my first comp this year, something I never thought I could or would even want to do! But being at Baem has taught me to much and it motivated me to push my comfort zone even more, on top of that, everyone is so kind, helpful, and supportive. I've never felt as if I didn't belong or that I wasn't good enough to learn, the community here is the best, so if you're new and like me, want to build your confidence, learn some valuable skills, and feel right at home while doing it, I highly recommend this gym and no where else. I started BJJ in May of 2019, and this was my first ever gym/school/academy. It's safe to say that as long as I'm in Fremont I'll always be sure to come here and train. I've been training for a little under a year now with coach Denney and couldn't imagine getting started in my journey at any other school or with any other group of people. Baem feels like a second home in many ways, with the safe and clean environment, the good training partners, and the lessons both on and off the mats that I take home with me after every hard session. It's a small space, but it's enough. The school itself is inside an Asian shopping/restaurant plaza so you'll be able to get your fix of Asian food and boba. Also close to the 880 and 680 highway. This gym has only gotten better since my initial review. Everyone is (still) incredibly friendly and welcoming to new and experienced people. I've trained and dropped in at many more gyms since my last review and still none have been able to make me feel so welcomed as well as provide me with such a high quality of instruction found. Denney doesn't just simply demonstrate a few moves each day. He teaches the mindset behind techniques and how they can be incorporated into larger game plans. To me, this makes learning Jiu Jitsu much more digestible and trains my brain cells to think more strategically about the bigger picture instead of just memorizing movements. There's kids classes, dedicated classes for stand-up, open mats, and gi and no-gi classes. The location has recently moved about 5 minutes from the first location and is MUCH bigger. There is now a huge mat space with brand new Dollamur mats, a shower, as well as a workout area with free weights, squat rack, hex bar, assault bike, battle ropes, and kettle bells. The fact that the gym has upgraded with so many additional amenities amidst a pandemic is a testament to the quality of the instruction and care Denney has towards the gym and its students. read more

My ten year went here for a little bit over a year but then we moved out the area. The kids instructors were always patient and good with the kids. Although the kid classes did not interact with Denney often, my interactions with him were always great and positive. You can tell he cares about all of his students and wants everyone to succeed, and continue their BJJ journey, even if it's not with him. If we lived in the area we would definitely still be going here! read more

Denney is a incredibly instructor that is friendly and easy to talk to. He is great with kids is happy to answer any questions you might have. He is not a strict instructor like other places you might have been to and makes you feel like family. Everyone that is part of his team and helps him teach are also great teachers. If you there just to train and exercise there is a place for you but also if you love tournaments and want to compete at a high level Denney will help you achieve that. Wow, I'm definitely overdue for writing Professor Denney is the gangsta jiu jitsu instructor you've always needed, but didn't know existed. Fremont is very lucky to have such a new young school. I really wish this was around when I was growing up. I've dropped in a number of times and really enjoyed my rolls there. Everyone is pretty new and it's really nice to see everyone's progress from day zero as a white belt to getting 6-12 months in. For newbies, it's really nice to have a staunch focus on fundamentals since everyone is starting up. It's also really important to get some 1:1 help as you're learning, that's readily available at a newer, smaller school. If you're a world class competitor and you just want to choke out blue belts and purples all day as you tune up for tournaments, this is probably not the school for you. But ya, check out Professor Denney's podcast to get more of a sense of where his own jiu jitsu journey started in SoCal to straight hustling all his way into corporate finance and his own jiu jitsu school. Not to knock on the great Brazillians I've trained with prior to Baem Jiu Jitsu, but the english barrier is still an issue and it's just really refreshing to be able to talk deeply with Professor Denney about a technique or meta philosophy around a certain move. read more

Baem is a fantastic jits and judo gym. I've done a few drop ins and everyone has been very kind and welcoming. The gym is kept very clean, and the instructors really take the time to show the techniques and answer any questions anyone has. My son and I live in southern california but our family lives in Milpitas. Last summer, we stayed in Milpitas for a little over a month and I had to find my son a jiujitsu school while we were there so he would not regress on his jiujitsu training. We found this place and my son liked it instantly. The coaches are great with children. His classmates are friendly and welcoming. Love training here! As a newcomer to BJJ, I was very nervous to try something new. Denney was so welcoming, and didn't make me feel like a newcomer at all! He was great at explaining moves, and made it very easy to understand for a newbie like me. The gym was very clean, and I appreciated that there was both a ladies' and men's changing area (usually there is only a men's changing area since the sport is predominantly men). I appreciate that Denney cleans the mats after each class to keep things as clean as possible! Also appreciated that the first week was free (trail week), and I felt like it was enough time to give me a good intro to BJJ, the people of the gym, and the facilities itself--I've tried out another place that only had a one day trial. As good as it gets! I am a total newcomer to this martial art, but Denney and his students made it easy for me to quickly transition from nervous novice to avid student. Been training for over 6 years at multiple gyms. Excellent training environment here. Denney's teaching style stands out because of (1) his unusually high level of interaction with students and (2) focus on helping each student develop a mentality and gameplan suited for them. After teaching a move and drilling, Denney will regularly regroup the class and open the floor for Q and A, where he will dive deep into troubleshooting, explaining details that make the move work and not work, and also philosophy of how to think about the particular move in the context of a larger game. This bookending of instruction - before and after drilling - is a unique class structure, and really helps to emphasize understanding of the key details that take your game from good to great.
