Great lessons for kids
mini m.

Friendly staff. Very clean. My daughter is 4 and started training Jiu Jitsu I love the schedule and location. I feel blessed to have them close by. Coach Tom is friendly and has the best fun strategy to teach kids and today we met coach Mimi. We feel comfortable here and the gym is totally welcoming!!

This gym has only gotten better since my initial review. Everyone is (still) incredibly friendly and welcoming to new and experienced people. I've trained and dropped in at many more gyms since my last review and still none have been able to make me feel so welcomed as well as provide me with such a high quality of instruction found. Denney doesn't just simply demonstrate a few moves each day. He teaches the mindset behind techniques and how they can be incorporated into larger game plans. To me, this makes learning Jiu Jitsu much more digestible and trains my brain cells to think more strategically about the bigger picture instead of just memorizing movements. There's kids classes, dedicated classes for stand-up, open mats, and gi and no-gi classes. The location has recently moved about 5 minutes from the first location and is MUCH bigger. There is now a huge mat space with brand new Dollamur mats, a shower, as well as a workout area with free weights, squat rack, hex bar, assault bike, battle ropes, and kettle bells. The fact that the gym has upgraded with so many additional amenities amidst a pandemic is a testament to the quality of the instruction and care Denney has towards the gym and its students.

Denney is a incredibly instructor that is friendly and easy to talk to. He is great with kids is happy to answer any questions you might have. He is not a strict instructor like other places you might have been to and makes you feel like family. Everyone that is part of his team and helps him teach are also great teachers. If you there just to train and exercise there is a place for you but also if you love tournaments and want to compete at a high level Denney will help you achieve that. One last thing he has weights for weight training.

Valentine's day class! What a great group, thanks Denny!

I've been doing BJJ recreationally for a few years but never consistently enough to advance and never at one specific gym for very long. So when I bounced around several gyms in the bay, it was hard to find one that stuck. That being said, I definitely found the one here at Baem. I'll direct this review to people who have never stepped into a BJJ gym before. This is a phenomenal place, my wife and I went and have been going consistently ever since. She was particularly shy about the experience for obvious reasons, but Denney is stellar at instruction and ensuring all his students are comfortable. This culture he's instilled in his gym resonates with all the students and it is easily one of the most welcoming places I've been to. I highly recommend you do a drop in even if you don't have a gi and have no idea what BJJ is.

Clean mats, sanitized often

I tried bjj for the first time at Baem, and I've always felt safe and supported in the 6 months since I started. Denney, the black belt who owns the gym, is a long-time practitioner and instructor. A variety of lower and higher belts attend the gym, and all bodies and identities are welcome! - Clean, mats swept and sanitized regularly - Morning and evening class options - Kids classes are available - Free trial!!! - Gym area - Bathroom + separate shower - Water/energy/protein drinks available - Sports tape/first-aid ready for emergencies The trial is free, and all the reviews about Denney being a friendly and clear instructor + the great people at Baem are true :)

Great location off the Warm Springs Bart station. Denney is a very genuine instructor that is committed to helping his students learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Would definitely recommend this school for anyone that is in the area and is looking to start, or continue their Jiu Jitsu education. Edit - definitely enjoying the school more now that I am a member. We have been going over different systems each week to progressively learn the fundamentals of bjj.

They create such a positive, supportive environment where kids can learn, build confidence, and have fun while being challenged. We are so grateful for everything they've done for our daughter, and we couldn't recommend Chris Jones Jiu Jitsu highly enough. If you're looking for a place that truly invests in your child's development, this is it!

She's made new friend and everyone is respectful. The staff is great, they know each kids name. They also have this awesome rule where parents are only allowed to watch the last week of the month to see the progress tour kid has made. Another awesome rule is that parents are not to get involved or give instruction to their kids. If you do, you will be told. I love this! You don't have to deal with any obnoxious parent trying to direct their kid. This place builds confidence and teaches. My husband loves the adult classes. The people are progressing and the environment is friendly. Make-up classes are allowed. They also have a Zen planner app where you can reserve your spot. The place looks clean and there is plenty of parking. Prices are reasonable. I would recommend this place for adults and kids. It's a great place with awesome staff.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a gym opened up much closer to where I lived. I was even more surprised by how much I have enjoyed the people that I've met (and rolled with) at Daruma. When I picked my very first gym, I passed on at least 3 different gyms because of the culture. In one of the gyms, the head coach/ professor didn't seemed involved. At another gym, I was being pushed to buy long term memberships and their expensive gi/ uniform. I never got those feelings with Daruma. Everyone has been super kind and supportive. The Milpitas location is still a relatively new (as of 2026) so some of the adult classes have a smaller turnout. This can be really good for people just starting in the sport, but I personally just like to roll. My step son also started Daruma with me and he loves it. The class structure is very fun and the coaches are really good about watching out for the kids safety. It's also been a really great experience for me and my stepson to bound over this shared activity.

Daruma Dojo originally opened in Sunnyvale, and we're so glad they expanded to Milpitas. A friend recommended this place to us, and it definitely did not disappoint. Daruma Dojo offers classes for kids/teens and adults. Adults can choose from morning or evening classes. For kids, ages 4-6 attend class from 4:30-5:30pm, while 7-15 train from 5:30-6:30, Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday classes are combined for ages 6-15. It's truly a family-friendly environment - so much that some parents have even joined after seeing their kids train! Membership also allows access to both Milpitas and Sunnyvale locations, though we haven't visited the Sunnyvale location yet. The front staff are friendly and welcoming, and the professors and coaches are patient and do a great job of explaining techniques in a way kids understand.

Headed by Mike Prudencio, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy had its humble beginnings and has grown significantly through the years and within that span has been home to quite a few experienced BJJ practitioners. Mike and his team do a fine job in cultivating a strong community through respect for each other and the gym - the annual friend and family social events always have a good showing! Whether you've had some experience in the sport and are looking for a new gym with great people to train, a completely newcomer to anything related martial arts, or perhaps a parent looking for an extracurricular for your child, One World will open their arms to you with something to offer. Although One World was not our first introduction to Brazilian jiu jitsu while we researched for gyms, it ranked highest on our list due to the location, flexibility of the scheduling, training space, and coaching staff. Just a couple blocks away from the highway and being quite central in Newark, the gym is easily accessible. There's plenty of parking since most of the other establishments here aren't well frequented or mainly warehouses/non-customer facing offices. Adult classes are offered multiple times a day (early morning at around 630, mid morning at 11, and evening at 6) almost everyday of the week. The kids classes are also offered multiple days of the week (weekday evenings around 5 and Saturday mornings around 10). There may be different days/times for gi and no gi but they have a convenient online calendar that is kept up to date. Each session typically consists of warmups, drills, techniques, and open rounds of rolling. They also have two mat areas. The main mat area is huge and can accommodate large classes (sometimes the kids classes can get upwards of 30-40) with still ample amount of space for training and drilling. The secondary mat area is primarily used for no gi training when the main mat area is being used for instruction. And finally the coaching staff consists of some really experienced instructors in addition to Coach Mike. Their attention to detail and ability to motivate the athletes adds tremendous value to each visit. In addition, the instructors for the kids classes are so patient while firm to enable each kid to grow and advance at their own pace. For those looking to advance their game, Mike and his team of coaches will enable you to hone the fundamentals in addition to expanding your toolkit of techniques. The group of folks coming to this gym check their ego at the door and are all very willing to share and learn from each other. There are quite a few competitors who will certainly push your limits and help you get to the next level. If you're a newbie, welcome to the club! We all started one way or another but what's important is that you start and keep coming back. Time on the mat will level up your game and with some patience and dedication, you'll continue to build confidence, get fit, and develop practical skills for self defense and competitions. And as a parent, you'll feel right at home with fellow parents who have also sought out an activity for their children to participate in to gain intangible skills (confidence, self discipline, conflict resolution, social belonging, mentorship to name a few) while learning some practical techniques for self defense. They start children as young as 7 years of age but it may also depend on their maturity. I personally came in with no formal martial arts experience and have to say, it was one of the best decisions. As a father, finding a new hobby to enjoy on my own as well as with my children and redefining myself as the kiddos grow up has made this journey a very rewarding experience. The community has been great to foster that personal growth and it's been fun to bring the new generation into the sport. Overall, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy is by far one of the greatest places for an in-depth introduction and continued education of Brazilian jiu jitsu. If you're interested, consider coming in for a trial class and see for yourself if the gym and sport is right for you!

Again, this is the first time she had ever tried this so expectations should be low. From what I could see my daughter was doing great, but the instructor seemed to be very serious and in the end she said my daughter was not "ready" while she seemed to be doing just fine compared to even some of the kids that were there for awhile. How is some supposed to learn if you don't train them and give them more than one chance? You don't just give up on someone with only one try. My daughter was very excited when she got home and was hoping to go for a second round. Very disappointing and unprofessional as you're supposed to train these kids and not give up on them this quickly. These aren't adults and the instructor is supposed to teach them the skills if they feel like they are initially lacking. These 2 appeared to be particularly familiar with the coach. The coaches made little to no attempt to build rapport, engage or really help the new kid. When said new kid raised a concern, he was ignored by the main coach and then brushed off by the second one. Overall, Lute is a little cheaper, but not a great environment for kids IMHO.
