While Neil M. makes an obvious and valid point about the larger stock of Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op, I don't feel that is necessarily a deal-breaker against buying a bike from The Bicycle Doctor which is still quite sizeable. Plus, I get the feeling that the stock offered by The Bicycle Doctor is quite savvy in its own way, with some unique products which may be hard to find elsewhere in Manchester. For example, an electric bike by Trek at £1,700 and a rainbow of cute pastel-coloured Brompton folding bikes both suggest that people are spending serious money here - in fact I don't think EBC stock electric bikes at all. I parted with cash for an interestingly versatile 100% merino wool 'buff', which can be to protect and the cold and UV also, plus a neat pair of cycling sunglasses which several people have asked me where I bought them from. I am in the market for cycle panniers, and I will definitely consider buying them from the good Bicycle Doctor, especially since they stock the high-end Ortlieb roll-top waterproof designs and even had four or so different colours in stock. On the repairs front, their website states that all their mechanics are Cytech-certified which sounds good enough to me! Lastly, The Bicycle Doctor allocates a significant corner of their precious floorspace to a rack of cycling leaflets detailing local routes, mass rides, and cycle-friendly tourism further afield - an authentic touch which typifies this Workers' Co-op which has been 'Serving the Cycling Community for over 25 years'. It's a coop where the staff are passionate, knowledgeable and cater to all customer types. In stock are great brands such as Surly and Brompton. They won't try to force you to buy something off the shelf, they will help you customise it and go the extra mile e.g. offering to loan us a bike so bf could accompany me home and giving us flapjacks! The shop is on a Victorian front of shops at the far side of the 'burb, with lots of shutters down on either side due to vacant premises or else restaurants and tapas bars that open in the evening. However, on a Wednesday at midday, Ken Foster's was busy with plenty of customers, although still with a pleasantly relaxed Chorlton vibe. I haven't bought anything from them as yet, but I would second Kirsten's comments about the stock being more than adequate - it is all on one level, but a very deep plan store and with more bikes under cover out the front of the shop. I think they sell second-hand bikes also if you are needing a good machine for under £200. On the customer service front, I asked about detachable baskets and tag-along bike trailers. While they had a good enough selection of panniers and baskets in stock, I was impressed with how quickly staff pulled out various manufacturer catalogues with prices to give me a good look at the full range of options available. I've since come home and Googled 'basil.nl' and also 'klickfix' and come up with too many parameters, I guess, although with a good feeling of no stone left unturned! Also, any in-depth technical questions the sales staff was unsure of (e.g. custom brackets required for mounting baskets) he went straight to the mechanic in the back shop who had the answer. Plus, I talked with the sales staff about where each of us lived and bike routes, and he gave me free copies of the Manchester and Trafford area cycle maps produced by the city council, which I've found hard to get hold of elsewhere. If you live anywhere near Chorlton your cycling needs are well-covered by this place. Also, if you live a bit further afield but appreciate a more customer-facing approach you could do a lot worse than asking for Sean at Cycle Logic.

I didn't buy my bike from here, but shortly after buying my bike, I realised that I was missing an essential for any bike owner in Manchester - a decent lock. I knew that I needed a D lock and I wanted something pretty good, as I knew so many people who had had their locks cut within seconds. The guy who served me was incredibly helpful. He talked me through all of the locks that were available and advised me about the pros and cons of each one. He wasn't at all patronising or pushy. If I were to need any further bike accessories I would not hesitate to go back to this shop. It seems like a great team of guys who work there, and they also do custom builds, maintenance and repairs.

They made time to squeeze my husbands bike in although he didn't have an appointment as they understood (and probably sympathised with) the situation. The bike was fixed on the same day, at a good price - we expected a premium to be added because of the fast turnaround. Because the staff were so helpful and accomodating, we make a point of trying to visit now whenever we're in the area. In fact, we even waited to buy our son's first bike from them -wanting to support such a good independent shop. When we went in to try the bikes, the staff weren't pushy but offered really sound practical advice. I'd definitely recommend a visit next time you're in Uppermill.

All the staff have always been very friendly, and have given great advice which makes quite a difference with some other bicycle shops I've visited in the past. The prices are fair and the advice very good. The staff actually talked me out of repair I did not need, letting me know that the bicycle would still run fine. They gave it a look over after I'd had it a spell. Upgraded the gears for me for a small charge (I'm getting old). Been back for bits and bobs, panniers etc. Been very impressed with them and I love the bike (Genesis Equilibrium, cycled England coast to coat, Scotland and Northern Spain with it). If you want to be gushed at and fawned over, it's probably not the place for you. They give you the facts and let you decide for yourself. Friendly though.
