The railroad buff in me just has to feature an historic train station for my 2000th review…read more Gare de Nice-Ville is the main train station in Nice. This spring, we arrived here from Paris and later departed from here for Florence. The historic Beaux-Arts exterior has been well maintained, and a pleasure to behold. Trains arrive and depart from the glass-domed train shed behind the station. Platforms are accessible by stairs and lifts. Be prepared to stand on a platform waiting for a train. Ticketing kiosks are located near the station entrances, and the queues are long in the morning. If you need to buy a ticket, allow 20-30 minutes -- kiosk instructions could be clearer. There's also a small but nice concession for take-away coffee and food. Taxis and ride shares stop out from of the station.

Especially since the self service kiosks are only in French... There is an English/UK button to click, but that only translates minimum information on the kiosk. Ambiance - It is a major public train station, so come early if you are not experienced. Crazy busy as expected. Pay to use toilets. Service - Overall good. The best service was our train station, Inoui in Marseille. Price - 20-25 Euros depending on where you are going. Owner Comment - Thanks for having affordable and smooth transportation in Nice. With this station, we made day trips to Cannes, Monaco and now Eze.

A really great place to stay in downtown Nice, the Best Western Roosevelt hotel provided a nice…read morebasecamp as we explored the areas close by, including Cannes and Monaco. We prepaid for 2 nights on the Citi travel site, paying about $100 per night during the offseason. It is considered a 4-star hotel per the France Hotel standards, and thus was charged an additional tax ($13 for two people for the the two nights). This can't be charged at time of booking since the rate depends on the date of stays (and the rate can fluctuate), but is collected at check-in. The room was very large per European standards. One interesting tidbit is that the toilet is in a area than the shower/sink separated by the room itself. It truly is a water closet, and I don't ever remember staying in a hotel that was set-up like that. We got a chance to talk to the night clerk when we checked out, and that even though the hotel is named after our 32nd president, he never stayed here. The clerk educated us in stating that all Best Western hotels in Europe are named after an American term, and that it makes it easy for folks to know which Best Western they are talking about. The building had a history of being the headquarters of the U.S. Navy back in the day. Pros: - like other Best Westerns, English was spoken by the staff and everyone was gracious and helpful. - King size bed (Two twins put together) Good mattress. - Location is excellent. It is within walking distance from the Nice train station (15 minute walk even with luggage), and also close to both the Nice downtown beach and Old Town Nice. - individual air conditioning units - bathrooms have towel warmers - There is a large bar on the first floor where they will refill your reusuabe bottle with filtered water. Cons - It had a really small elevator, probably only space for 2 people or 1 person with luggage. - Tough place to park or drop off your luggage - Breakfast was not included in the rate- - like most other European hotels, no facilities for exercise and no pool This was probably the nicest hotel we stayed at, during our European vacation. They use the room keys made of bamboo, and we kept it as a souvenir. It was of great value, and the location made it easy for us to see everything we wanted during our 2 night stay.

We own a split AC at our home so we pulled the filters out of our hotel's unit, which look like they haven't been cleaned in over a year. After speaking to front desk, they offered us a fan and told us we shouldn't be tampering with the AC unit. Also two days in a row housekeeping cleaned our room and no new towels were left, we had to ask the front desk and after I asked them to please get of their cell phone, he said "I will give them to you" and I said "No, this is the second time we've had to ask. Please take them to our room." which he promptly did but for the price, location and lack of service, unimpressed. We actually moved to a nicer hotel during our stay. BW Roosevelt breakfast is decent, that's the only reason for 2 stars. Look elsewhere.

If you are planning to stay here, I'd highly recommend taking a taxi from the airport (~35 euro) or packing light. The hike up the hill with luggage can be a challenge, even if you're in decent shape. Service at the hotel is 4.5 stars. Phillippe is awesome and has great recommendations for dinner. He's friendly and welcoming. I would give him 5 stars. I would've rated the hotel higher, but it is a bit of a trek to the touristy spots. In addition, the walls are thin, so you can hear everything that goes on in the room next door. Our neighbors were definitely having a lot of "fun" on our last night. Even though I knocked on their wall several times, I wasn't able to stop their late night fun. We thought our room included the breakfast buffet, unfortunately it didn't and we had a 16 euro/pp/day charge. It wasn't that we minded the charge, but the food was definitely not worth the 16 euro/day. There weren't that many choices at breakfast. The hotel provides free wifi access, although it is spotty. It is also limited to two sign-ons per room. If you have a lot of wifi devices, you'll find yourself trying to figure out which device you want to connect to the wifi. There are some other creative ways you can get online, but I'm sure other yelp reviewers are smart enough to figure it out. :) If I visited Nice again, I would probably pay the extra $ and stay at the Hotel Negresco. I do recommend this hotel if you have a rental car. Nice is car friendly and this particular hotel is located in a residential area, so there is plenty of free street parking.

The garden with breakfast (we didn't have it here as there was a stunning boulangerie (open every day) very close to the base of the hill where the hotel is perched upon) is beautiful, spacious and a little pool for the adventurous. The rooms are cute french, wall paper, mirrors but spacious and light. I wouldn't want for anything else in a hotel room. The front of house at the hotel was especially helpful. He has a great knowledge of restaurants and is very honest about the quality of food. His recommendations were excellent and we enjoyed chatting to him each morning about our plans. Very friendly, easy going and helpful. We would stay here again any day!
