Came here twice for our January vacation: once coming in from Paris - Gare de Lyon and once leaving for Italy. It has a beautiful facade in the front, and the walkways from/to the train are relatively wide, letting a large group of people go in/out with their luggage. There didn't seem to be much inside, so you have to nearby restaurants for a bite to eat. For our outbound trip, we needed to catch a SNCF train to the nearest Italian town (Ventimiglia). We used our ticket to scan through the gate into the departure area, but was not used after that. The train runs every 30 minutes in the morning, and we caught the 7:50 train. The track doesn't get assigned until 30 minutes or so. There were no elevators with easy access, so needed to carry our bags using stairs. Track E ended up being our stop. The train came on time. It was a beautiful ride through the coast (so choose a seat to the right to see the sights). We arrived at Ventimiglia by 8:40, stopping at the following stations (Nice Riquier, Ville Franche Sur Mer, Beaulieu Sur Mer, Eze, Cap D'Ali, Monaco, Roquebrune Cap-Martin, Carnoles, Menton, Menton Garavan). It was open seating, and there were plenty of choices. There is no overhead racks for luggage, so had to store the luggage in the baggage racks in each car.

Normally this train station would be a 3 easily, based on overall aesthetic, convenience of location and accessibility to surrounding retail and dining amenities (convenience stores, restaurants/bakeries, groceries), but like some other reviews have mentioned, the customer service is beyond horrible and very unfriendly to non-French speakers. I arrived 30 min prior for a 8:50am departure and being prepared, had purchased my ticket the night before on the SNCF app and with QR code on my phone. 10 minutes prior to departure I scan said QR code at one of the turnstile gates and it won't scan. There are 4-5 station workers standing around directing customers and I get their attention, showing them my phone and try scanning a couple more times. The attendant points over to the right and says something in French about going to the machines on the side. When I look confused I politely ask another attendant who basically says something similar and when I ask them if they could help me another attendant basically yells at me in French to go to the machines, very irritated and without further explanation. I back away and go over to the ticket machines. I see a white machine with the word échange and figure it means exchange so I try this first. Wow. Incredibly frustrating. A) it has a touch screen but you need to double tap on options (as if you're using a mouse), this took me a couple minutes of angry tapping to understand. B) all initial instructions are in French, you have to choose a the language selection written in French to get to the English wording, super backward and unfriendly for non-French, non-European language speakers. C) in order to exchange a ticket you need to log into you SNCF account, and enter your personal email and SNCF password on screen, visible to all around you. D) after doing this THREE times, on TWO different machines, they both said the exchanged tickets could not be printed on the machine. E) BUT on the same machines if I wanted to buy a new ticket it was not a problem to print a ticket. WTH. Meanwhile in between my trying I had walked around trying to find a ticket office (none) or help desk (not open/manned, which was the case multiple days when I arrived to the station). I had gone back to another attendant who told me he couldn't help me and pointed me to the yellow helpline telephone to the right of turnstiles. I saw another few people trying to use this and basically overheard the speaker reply by an automated help line, again in French. Not surprisingly as all of this is happening I notice about a dozen other confused parties of non-French origin similarly confounded by how to proceed. We ask each other but no one knows what to do. By this point I've totally missed my train by 10 minutes and in my desperation not to miss the next one, i go back to one of the white machines and buy a new ticket. The next couple days I end up using the blue machines bc the double tapping just felt idiotic to me on a touch screen. Those are NOT touch screens and are slightly easier to figure out. Press the green button to start and confirm options, and then use the circular dial (around the green button) to select options. So yea....don't bother buying tickets online and get there early to buy your tickets at the machines. Other than that the departure/arrival screens are straightforward and the platforms are clearly marked.

This station is a lot smaller than the Marseille station and there are not as many food options but it is still maintained regularly. The streets in and around the station are washed daily. Trains arrive fairly promptly having departed from and arrived to this station from Marseille and Montpellier. It's the only station in Nice to travel around the country and other major cities in Western Europe. One big thing they need is seating inside the terminal. Smaller cities like Montpellier had a much bigger terminal with a ton of places to sit.

(There are also a few bus lines though it's more convenient to walk since most of the narrow streets are pedestrian only.) The station is pretty clean and decent sized for supporting only two rail tracks--one headed East and the other West--along the coast. Train arrival and departure information is posted on screens outside and inside the station. Ticket machines may take a little bit of time (maybe 5-10 minutes) to figure out a) if you haven't used them before, as there are two different types of machines, and b) especially if you don't read French or aren't familiar with any Romance languages, since the preliminary navigation screens are in French. So plan your time accordingly if this is your first time taking a train in the south of France. I'd recommend purchasing a ticket directly at the station since the one I bought online on their app couldn't actually be used. When I tried to scanning the ticket QR code (from my phone) on the digital scanner for entry to the platform, it wouldn't work. During normal business hours, there are a few spots inside to purchase convenience items, snacks and drinks. There is an inside waiting area with benches, and if you're waiting outside the platform is covered overhead. Bathrooms are available in the form of public toilets which are I believe €0.50 per use. Taxis are readily available outside the station in the mid-morning and early evening times when I arrived and departed Antibes.

Beware of pickpockets…read more This station is very close to Nice Airport and is the best option if you need to take a train westward towards Cannes and Grasse or eastbound to Monaco and the Italian border. You can take a tram from the airport and get off at the tram station (Grand Arenas) across the street. The ride is free between the airport and that station. To reach Saint-Augustin Station, you do need to take the stairs or the lift to reach the area to buy tickets and the train platform. There is a ticket counter and a few ticket machines outside. The machines are a bit awkward to use as you need to turn the controls when making a selection. There are English instructions, but it is a bit difficult to change the setting so I would buy the tickets from the ticket counter if it is open. While the location is convenient, it is a notorious pickpocket location. My mom nearly was pickpocketed in the lift by a bunch of young girls. The lift was too full, which they used as a distraction for their treachery. It was a good lesson learned to be more careful with valuables, but it did start the trip in France on a bad note. Lastly, be aware that trains may arrive in the opposite direction if there is a track issue. Was headed to Ventimiglia, but ending up taking the train on the westbound platform due to this. Did not know what was up until I saw a large amount of passengers walking to the other side of the tracks. Though this led to a chaotic rush with heavy luggage in tow as the train was about to arrive. This station is a convenient location to take a train after arriving from the airport, but you need to be on guard when walking in the area and at the platform when waiting for your train.

In this…read morecase, we decided to exercise the cheaper (and more adventurous) tack of train-chasing the Train de Pignes. Starting with a bit of lolly-gagging around station in Puget-Théniers while paying customers boarded the train, then racing up the road toward Entrevaux and Annot in hopes of a few photo-ops of all the huffing and puffing! Amazing! These rails are actually a commuter line that runs from Nice up to the city of Digne-les-Bains, which by the way, would be worth the trip just to ride up this scenic route in the daily diesel powered rail-cars. But on Sundays in the summertime, they fire up this old steam locomotive (apparently built in the 20s in Cassel, Germany) and make the twenty-kilometer run from Puget-Théniers to Annot - Maybe not the best part of the run, but a very good part of the run. We had just done a steam train ride in Provence a few days before, so we didn't have the compunction to buy a ticket to ride on this one. But had we done so, we would have missed out on the chance to photograph the 'little-engine-that-does.' I'm sure it's a great view from the train, and I suspect we'll buy a ticket and ride it one day, but just seeing that living, breathing locomotive pull the train up this gorge is one of life's richest moments. Ride it. Chase it. Photograph it. But only on Sundays! Worth planning your holiday around this! And much safer than the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!

I believe Lignes d'Azur is the only public transport in Nice offering both bus and tram services. My dad and I purchased a 7-day bus/tram pass after taking Tram 98 to our hotel on the Promenade. Although we didn't use the buses besides the airport, we really took advantage of the tram line going from one end to the other whenever we wanted to explore or get something to eat. Apart from the work commute hours, the trams are generally less crowded and always a better option than taking a taxi or an Uber in my opinion. 7 day passes get the job done on a weekly basis.
