It's pretty easy to figure out where you need to go and which platform to be on for a train in or out. I think there are 20-30 different platforms. We took a DB (Deutsche Bahn) to and from the Black Forest without any issue. The trains are clean, smooth, and FAST!

There are lots of restaurants, amazing bakeries, and coffee shops to choose from and if you wait inside in the restaurant area, you must make a purchase. Unfortunately, the train schedule is quite different on Sunday and we ended up having to leave the bullet train and get on a smaller train at another platform, carrying luggage up and downstairs. Then we drove a while longer on the train and then had to change trains yet again. We are so grateful to the people who helped us finally get to our hotel!

The ticketing was fairly frustrating, but we'd grown accustomed to that as the electronic ticketing system in Germany, despite there being an English option, is not at all easy to navigate unless you are familiar with it. By this time in our trip we knew what to expect and had built in some time to navigate it and had a vague idea of what we needed so it went fairly well, but with the same little computer hiccups we'd come to expect from the system. The overall train station was, in my opinion, a bit grimy, and well loved, but it had some little cafes that were open early which was a win, and some fairly clean restrooms, though you had to go all the way to the basement for them. Overall, not a lot to report here. It could be modernized, cleaned up a bit, and improved, but it gets the job done.

Central station for the city of Köln (Cologne), it is one of the busiest rail stations in Germany…read more It is quite large and I got to explore it a bit today thanks to a delay by the wonderful folks at Deutsche Bahn. My tip to you is that if you do have an extended layover here, use the luggage storage for your suitcases and step outside. You'll find the tremendous Kölner Dom that is worth photographing and touring. I did not have THAT much time so it was pictures only today. The train station has coffee (including Starbucks, yuck), pastries, lots of restaurants, restrooms, a waiting lounge if your train ticket includes that service, car rentals, ATMs and yes, the Ibis hotel. The train station is easy to navigate through but there is still ongoing construction around the station that can be tricky. The station has a coffee shop, and a few other shops with light bites to purchase while you wait. There is also a bathroom but you will need to pay Euros (or a credit card I believe) to use it, which is pretty standard throughout Europe.
