I have previously mentioned the wonderful products made by Dutton Farms, a special education school in Rochester Hills. The products that their students make, like soap, hand sanitizer, and lip balm, are superior to anything made by mega conglomerates. I am also happy to support Rising Stars, another amazing special education school for adults with disabilities located in Center Line. The multigrain bread was fresh and tasty. It's also cheaper than any of the healthy bread you'll find at places like Whole Foods. I am happy to support a locally owned variety store like Metropolitan that sells products from schools like Rising Stars. I hope that more people choose locally made products created by programs that benefit the community over food made by corporate factories with questionable labor and safety practices!

Because it's in the Pointes, the caliber of clothes there is pretty nice. They must weed out any schlocky stuff because it's all nice and frequently high end. In the last month I walked out of there with Franco Sarto boots for $5, multiple Ann Taylor & Banana Republic & J Crew sweaters, nice shirts & tops, you get the idea. They have some kind of 'special' every day, whether it's 50% off, buy one get one, or my favorite recently, everything for a buck. That's right, a buck. If you're not too embarrassed to shop at a resale store, come on by. Finally, the youth that work there are so nice and are really happy to help you out. So not only are you getting a bargain, you're supporting a great organization.

For the birthday party package you pick two projects for the kids to do during the party. Our kids picked the hex bug maze and the robot alligator. The kids had a blast being creative and seeing the awesome results. They ended with a robot battle. The staff was so good with the kids (mix of 6&7 year olds). All the parents have to do is bring the food/cake and party favors and the staff will take care of the rest. They served the food and cupcakes to the kids. They gave each birthday boy a special Robot Garage Lego mini fig. They helped pack up the food and presents and transport them to our cars after. It was a really great experience. We hope to go back to the Robot Garage again in the near future.

I can't say enough good things about our experience with the staff at Excel. I had suspected for…read morequite some time that my daughter had something going on that wasn't quite right. She often reversed numbers and letters, transposed words or parts of words, and skipped words or phrases all together. As she got older, it became more and more evident because her school work was getting more difficult. Reading and writing were so difficult. It would take her such a long time and so much effort, that it often resulted in tears. As a homeschooler, I work so closely with her day in and day out, I could really see the struggle. I started researching reading disorders such as dyslexia, etc. I wasn't thrilled with what I had found. I talked to many reading/dyslexia specialists, and all they could offer me was a VERY expensive "bandaid" that would never actually fix the problem. A friend of mine told me about vision therapy, and how all 5 of her kids had gone to Excel. When Dr. Gietzen evaluated my daughter, he confirmed that she had some very severe deficits but was so optimistic and confident that they could be corrected. Some of her evaluations were so low that they couldn't even be tested. She has completed her course of VT with Stephanie and corrected EVERY single problem area. Stephanie was absolutely wonderful! My daughter was sad to end therapy because she wouldn't be seeing Stephanie every week. Now my daughter is at least in the range of normal or above for ALL of the areas she struggled with. It is amazing to me how much she has improved with her schoolwork and also athletics. It made sense why she was so clumsy and uncoordinated before. Every area of her life was being negatively affected by this, and now every area of her life has improved. I am so thankful that we found this solution for her. She just had her 3 month follow-up appointment, and her vision is completely stable - no regression. It's amazing what they've been able to do for her. Thank you so much to the staff at Excel.

This retreat was an awesome experience for me. I loved the time we spent outdoors walking or boating on the lake - it was very peaceful. At first I didn't know how it would be with such a wide age range (13-adult), but it turned out to be extremely special to bring together a small community for 4 days, of many ages. I can say this retreat was absolutely life-changing - and I am more connected to actual music-making instead of just technique! I will be attending again this year.
