    Bar!

This cafe is nice. Very good service and amazing hospitality. If you're ever in Te Anau, NZ this place is a pretty cool spot to go. They offer everything from breakfast, lunch or dinner and local NZ foods which you should try! Service is great with friendly staff and good service. We ordered several foods from the menu. Breakfast, burgers and minced lamb! Our appetisers were good too and I think was a bit much food for our group. We had a bread and hummus platter which was good! Most of us had the burgers which came with fries. Very good tasting burgers. One of us had a breakfast which was enormous btw, so if you order it... you better be hungry. The heifers were good and juicy and the fries were plentiful. I had wine and coffee, both of which were good. Also this place was the only thing open on Sunday which was a blessing because we met the best host! She was very sweet and very helpful! I hope come back to sometime and dine here again!

    Pavlova desssert, very yummy.

I was in Te Anau a few days ago and I had dinner at Bailiez. The lamb shank was superb, and the restaurant had a great ambiance. I highly recommend it..

We were in a bit of a rush due to a tour which we explained to the waitress. She reassured us that it would be fine and they would bring out whatever was ready first. It was quite clear she didn't tell the kitchen that though bc after waiting a while, we went up to remind them and the owner happened to overhear us. We saw him tell the chef and that's when he started putting the food out. Even then, the waitress stood there (we could see the food) and was waiting apparently for all the food to appear. We had to again ask them to please bring the food. Then she brought us knives and no forks. Salad had no dressing and we were told we have to go to the counter and make our own. $100 for 3 people for lunch and you have to make your own dressing? I might as well go to the grocery store and buy my own greens to make salad. The food itself was horrible. We got a seafood chowder, tomato soup, chicken salad, buffalo wings, and beef lasagna. The wings had a strange flavor sauce that was just coated on top. The soups tasted like they were from a can. The worst was the lasagna which looked and tasted plastic- like the microwave kind. I've never seen a lasagna with that smooth, non-food texture. All the salads we've had in NZ have been so fresh but this one was wilted. This was by far the worst meal we've had in this country, which has delicious and fresh food.

We just ate here for breakfast. I ordered the pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs, and my husband ordered the eggs and bacon. Both were very good and the prices were good for NZ food.

Bailiez Cafe & Bar Restaurant in Te Anau is conveniently located about a block from the lake and very close to Real Journeys which is a very popular tour operator whose groups meet to depart about one block away from Bailiez Restaurant. That makes Bailiez a natural place to have breakfast prior to departing on a tour for the day. We enjoyed creamed mushrooms with Parmesan cheese over Chapati toast and an order of eggs and toast. The food was good and the staff pleasant and efficient. When reviewing the menu we saw many dinner items that appealed to us. We told them we would try to return for dinner the following evening, but it just didn't work out time wise. We were disappointed as we really wanted to return.

Manager working tonight was quite rude for no reason. He made an effort to be annoyed by any request we made. Go elsewhere.

Poor service, mixed drinks were mixed up, and mediocre food. We won't be back anytime soon.

Great little restaurant in Te Anau…read more Make sure to book a reservation in advance. Kind of awkward entering because they don't have a hostess stand so just go up to the bar and tell them you have a reservation. This confused a lot of people because they'd come in and sit down in the restaurant area, presumably without a reservation, and then be asked to leave/informed they needed a reservation. I ordered a salad for a starter, the pork belly for my main, and the server twisted my arm to get the salted caramel cheesecake. Almost everything was delicious. The pork belly was great. Nice and crispy top and well cooked middle portion like you'd expect. The slaw it came with was meh. Smothered in mayo based sauce. I didn't really like it but then you'd get a bite of an apple which really cut through all that mayo or whatever and made it interesting. Too bad there wasn't more apple in there. The salad was fine. The cheesecake was very good. My server was great. She was running around taking care of everyone--both those who were in the bar area (ie drinks only) and in the sit down area (food). Fantastic service. Super friendly. If you're in the area check them out.

Fine beer list, but really it was the food that stood out -- very well prepared beef ribeye; a lamb rump that I had been reluctant to order because of a bad experience with that cut in Lake Tekapo, but fellow walkers did order and and it was superb. Some in our party ordered fried cauliflower with a crust and spicy sauce (after some wangling, the host parted with the recipe that I plan to make at home)

My partner had the lamb burger, we shared the poutine, and I had the venison pot pie. Portion sizes are huge so I had to take away some of my pot pie and some leftover poutine in a box. Taste wise, my partner enjoyed his burger, we both loved the poutine, and the venison pot pie was good but a little too sweet for my liking. The poutine, while used mozzarella instead of cheese curds, was our favorite and would just come here to order a few orders of that. We also got a flight to share to try some local brews including 3 sours, 1 ginger beer, 1 cider, and 1 lemonade. They were all good and I especially liked the ginger beer on the menu. The alcoholic lemonade was also quite nice and better than any alcoholic lemonades I've had in the states.

The adjoining balcony was great for watching life pass by down below with our 6x200mL taster flight for 45 NZD. For some reason, this beer bar and the last made a big deal about having Sculpin on tap. And little did they know, these San Diegan's cared not! Plenty of fresh hops selections were eyed instead, brews from Garage Project and Behemoth the MUCH better selections. The beer bar is huge with plenty of places to post up. Despite it's location in touristy QTN, Smith's keeps it laidback with its rougher environs that are not overdone or cringey like some of the places in QTN. Didn't have a food, but it looked to be of good value in expensive QTN, that is, if you aren't tired of pub food.
