Picture this: you've just completed that 5 day hike through the fiords, your body is craving any and everything. Bobbing and weaving your way through crowds of tour groups in their 60s walking slowly, you spot this joint in the distance. You're greeted at the door by someone who looks like someone you may have seen at a family reunion one year? That cousin that's always backpacking somewhere? Anyways, the point is familiarity. You feel welcome, like there is an immediate need to fill that empty stomach with what it craves.... Meat. The food is great, and now you fee ready to take on the next trail. But nah. You just go home and take a nap instead.

    Canned gin soda--yum!

Food was fine, and we were grateful any place was open, but don't go there expecting authentic American food like it promotes. My mixed roasted veg salad was good, and husband thought the burger was okay. They should consider importing an American-brand ketchup, though; the "ketchup" in NZ is decidedly different--some even tastes more like A1 Sauce. The service was good; the "American" décor was all over the place, much like the music (though I very much enjoyed the tunes).

We stopped in for Sunday Roast before our trip to Milford Sound. Probably the least welcoming staff - they seem to cater to locals in a tourist town. Oh well. The food was ok - not great. The roast was dry and chewy. It's such a great property - would love to recommend, but I can't.

We came here for the Sunday roast which at $16 is a price that is hard to beat! Roast lamb is available all day and roast Pork and Beef are available starting at 5. The Pork and Beef run out quickly though and is usually gone by 7 said the waitress. We decided to both go with the Lamb roast then. The lamb was quite good and I don't even like lamb that much. The mint jelly helps with the lambyness. It's also super tender!! I was a little disappointed the vegetables weren't roasted too though. Seemed a little strange when your carrots and cauliflower would be so great roasted! Wait time was about 45 minutes on a Sunday night especially when you get there at 730. :/ After a long day at the Milford Sound, we were super hungry but there was bar seating and outdoor seating to wait. The staff will come and find your number when they are ready.

Monkfish and Salmon Stack. New Zealand monkfish & hot smoked salmon, parmesan potato cake, bok choy, seasonal vegetables, béarnaise sauce.

I showed up without a booking on a Saturday night. The place was packed. The wait staff still managed to find me a table. I was surprised by the number of options on the menu. Some of the choices are classic American BBQ-style, but I found the menu also had items you'd expect at a fine dining restaurant. I feel there's really something here for everyone.

People sitting in the cold. Must have been 62 degeees farenheit.

We were looking for a place to relax after a long drive from Milford sound when we found this crowded pub. Sat inside was was greeted quickly by a friendly waitress. I had bangers and mash amd my huaband had the Sunday special with beef. The b&g were just what I was hoping for while he enjoyed his too. I do recommend this restaurant for a cozy meal.

Kind of awkward entering because they don't have a hostess stand so just go up to the bar and tell them you have a reservation. This confused a lot of people because they'd come in and sit down in the restaurant area, presumably without a reservation, and then be asked to leave/informed they needed a reservation. I ordered a salad for a starter, the pork belly for my main, and the server twisted my arm to get the salted caramel cheesecake. Almost everything was delicious. The pork belly was great. Nice and crispy top and well cooked middle portion like you'd expect. The slaw it came with was meh. Smothered in mayo based sauce. I didn't really like it but then you'd get a bite of an apple which really cut through all that mayo or whatever and made it interesting. Too bad there wasn't more apple in there. The salad was fine. The cheesecake was very good. My server was great. She was running around taking care of everyone--both those who were in the bar area (ie drinks only) and in the sit down area (food). Fantastic service. Super friendly. If you're in the area check them out.

Fine beer list, but really it was the food that stood out -- very well prepared beef ribeye; a lamb rump that I had been reluctant to order because of a bad experience with that cut in Lake Tekapo, but fellow walkers did order and and it was superb. Some in our party ordered fried cauliflower with a crust and spicy sauce (after some wangling, the host parted with the recipe that I plan to make at home)

My partner had the lamb burger, we shared the poutine, and I had the venison pot pie. Portion sizes are huge so I had to take away some of my pot pie and some leftover poutine in a box. Taste wise, my partner enjoyed his burger, we both loved the poutine, and the venison pot pie was good but a little too sweet for my liking. The poutine, while used mozzarella instead of cheese curds, was our favorite and would just come here to order a few orders of that. We also got a flight to share to try some local brews including 3 sours, 1 ginger beer, 1 cider, and 1 lemonade. They were all good and I especially liked the ginger beer on the menu. The alcoholic lemonade was also quite nice and better than any alcoholic lemonades I've had in the states.

The adjoining balcony was great for watching life pass by down below with our 6x200mL taster flight for 45 NZD. For some reason, this beer bar and the last made a big deal about having Sculpin on tap. And little did they know, these San Diegan's cared not! Plenty of fresh hops selections were eyed instead, brews from Garage Project and Behemoth the MUCH better selections. The beer bar is huge with plenty of places to post up. Despite it's location in touristy QTN, Smith's keeps it laidback with its rougher environs that are not overdone or cringey like some of the places in QTN. Didn't have a food, but it looked to be of good value in expensive QTN, that is, if you aren't tired of pub food.
