My friend and I tried 1 slice of the Peanut butter Marshmallow cheesecake and the Bavarian Apple cheesecake. Just 1 slice is enough to fill you up. It was a hearty amount of cheesecake and we almost couldn't eat it all, LOL! My friend loved his apple cheesecake and I loved how delicious marshmallows and peanut butter taste together. I never tasted that pairing before but it is very tasty. My love for dining out and hitting dessert places all took place in Winnipeg. It happened because I could finally afford to with my first full-time job! When Baked Expectations opened in Osborne Village, I was elated. It was nice walking over there to grab a slice of cake or pie. The walk was under ten minutes. It's a cozy eatery. It also serves lunch and dinner items, but it specializes in cakes, tortes, cheesecakes, and more. I never had meals here. Instead, I'd come after having dinner to get dessert. I'd always dine-in with friends. My usual orders were the following: - Carrot cake - Key lime pie - Banana cake - Shmoo torte I developed a massive love for carrot cake while in Winnipeg. The cake here was moist. The carrots were clearly fresh. The buttercream frosting was to-die-for yummy. I also enjoyed the key lime pie. I like the taste of tart limes. The tartiness isn't overdone, but it's enjoyable. There really isn't a banana cake that I don't love, unless you mess it up royally to the point where it's hard and unrecognizable. Luckily, the banana cake here is delightful. It's moist and fully of banana flavour, which is comfort food to me. Ah, the shmoo torte. I want to say that it's a Manitoba thing, as I have never eaten it outside the province. I could be wrong. It's essentially a torte with layered whipped cream, caramel, and nuts, with either sponge or angel food cake. I normally don't gravitate towards whipped cream and caramel in anything, but the shmoo torte here is awesome! It uses angel food cake, which makes it light and moist, and thankfully far from being dry where you want to soak it it water. I am drooling thinking about how much I miss the shmoo torte. The dessert portions are generous. Staff were always nice when I was around. I am glad that this store is still alive and kicking after all these years. It is currently open for takeout and delivery options due to COVID-19. The catch when ordering online is that you have to buy the whole cake, torte, or pie when it comes to dessert. It's not a problem for me. Heck, I could have the whole thing as a meal! However, if you can't eat the whole thing, you might want to wait until things are back to normal and get a huge slice instead. Their cakes simply cannot be beat in terms of size, and their non-dessert food is actually quite decent too. I've been here twice now, and both times I tried different items. The first time I had the German Chocolate Cheesecake, while the second time I had the linguine marinara and Oreo Cookie Cheesecake. I also had the Real Hot Chocolate both times. For the cheesecakes, I enjoyed the Oreo cookie cheesecake a lot more. The German chocolate one didn't have a good presentation, and had way too much pecan and not enough chocolate. The linguine marinara was decent. It's not the best I had, but the size portion was quite generous for the price I paid. The Oreo cookie cheesecake, man...if there's one cheesecake that I highly recommend everyone to try in here, it's definitely that one. Excellent in all ways possible in taste and presentation. Service was great both times, even during busy hours (and it gets damn busy at night especially on Fridays and Saturdays). We have been visiting this place for years. We have not been back for 5 years and just moved back. We have 4 boys (one is a baby). Granted after sugar, our child with ADHD was hyper. He was running around with the others and explored the bsmt a bit. Instead of some strategies to help occupy the children while we were getting ready to leave, we were given heck by the owner. The place was dead inside but we got the vibe upon entering from one staff that we were not welcome. No smiling or talking to our children. I get this place is popular and kids should sit still but it is not a place for families or thinking outside of the box. DOORDASHERS BEWARE!! Came here for a 7:57 pick up time for ONE slice. Arrived at 7:56. Waited 15 minutes for one slice. Many new walk up customers served first. When I complained an employee told me "we have 23 minutes to make doordash orders". In other words, the store takes the full allotted 23 minutes to make any order, no matter the size or when the dasher shows up. A couple of friends and myself are in Winnipeg for the week and this place was a block away from our AirBNB. We stopped in here on our last night for some cake. They only took debit and cash payments - and being "international" - our cards did not go through as debit. One of the girls working, who was helping us, noticed our struggles and gave us the piece we ordered FOR FREE. She was very kind and wholesome - we bought her Starbucks to return the gesture. We got the Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake. It has bananas in the middle and creamy frosting. My only complaint is that I wish the cake had more of the bananas throughout. However, it was delicious!! Reminds me of a portillos cake - if you are familiar. The actual cake is not overly sweet which is nice. Overall, nice place and staff is very friendly. read more

This place was very highly recommended to us by some local friends. It was okay so we felt a tad disappointed as we had cultivated a lot of expectations from baked expectations. We tried three of their cakes: Old Fashioned Chocolate - It was okay. It was a little too dense and too sweet for my taste. Cinnamon Torte - Or 1000 layer cake as we were calling it fondly. It was very nice, fluffy, tall with lots of easily distinguishable layers and balanced taste and sweetness. Very good. Shmoo - This was the lightest and fluffiest of the lot. A lot of caramel sauce was poured over it, which made it a little too sweet. Still pretty good. 3.5 stars overall. Having said all that, we'll definitely return. I give this place a 3 but there are some caveats....I don't have a huge sweet tooth but when it comes to birthday cakes and the odd sweet craving, this is my go-to place. They have the best cheesecakes here...ultra creamy and just plain ol' yummy I love their oreo cheesecake and the strawberry cheesecake. If you like chocolate, the "crazy chocolate cake" is delicious without being overly decadent as some chocolate cakes can be - it's covered in a dark chocolate ganache, and has 3 layers - chocolate cake, chocolate cheesecake in the middle and then another layer of chocolate cake. I also like the tia maria which is just layers of chocolate chip cookies soaked in tia maria layered with whipped cream. It's either cash or debit only, this place has never accepted credit card so beware! It's ridiculously busy on the weekends as crowds pack into this place for take out and dine in. I wish they had more than one poor girl working behind the glass case. Service can be a bit slow and inefficient due to lack of staffing coinciding with a rush. It kind of annoyed me when I was waiting for take out the other night and was waiting there patiently to order a slice to-go when 4 servers were gossiping on the side (in view) while one girl was working feverishly as the take out line grew. And I was not pleased when I opened up my take out box to see the smallest slice of crazy chocolate cake ever! They are usually pretty good about given a fair size especially since the slice came to $8.41 tax included. But I was very disappointed with the puny slice I got! The upside is that I saved on the calories...LOL. Savoury foods are decent here as it leans towards diner style food like burgers and chili fries. I like their chili fries and they serve some good mochas and hot chocolates here as well. Nice place to gather with a bunch of friends and pack on the fat and sugar as it provides for a lively atmosphere. I like how it has the 80's atmosphere which I hope they never take away because I feel the 80's look and the location on Osbourne make Baked Expectations what it is and helps give you that trip down memory lane -- also shows today's generation how the 80s felt. This is a Winnipeg food scene icon that has been around on Osborne for decades. It is a fair size restuarant and since being on Osborne poor parking. It is a place people often go on dates to share desserts or pick up cake for an event. I have been several years ago and found the cheesecake piece although a large serving to be medicore. There is no wow factor and its actually quite costly. More recently I made a special trip to baked expectations to find something fitting for my friends birthday. She likes peanut butter or I was thinking maybe a big favorite of baked expectations as I havent been in years. I was looking through the glass for quite some time at the cheesecakes pies and cakes and noted there was nothing with peanut butter. The cashier who was not busy never once asked if she could help me find anything. I finally did ask if there was any house favorites or what she recommends. She said I dont know, we have whats out, you can pick something. I found her abrupt, not knowledgable or friendly. So i left with nothing as I dont want to support a business with that kind of staff. We were able to seat ourselves immediately. Our group had three people and a stroller which they accommodated really well. For lunch two of us had the triple decker grilled cheese with tomato, mushrooms and spinach on dark rye and the other an omelette with mushrooms, onions and broccoli. The grilled cheese didn't have enough cheese in proportion to the three pieces of bread. There wasn't a lot of flavour even with the veggies. The best part of the sandwich was the dark rye bread. We had come for dessert so even after our lack luster lunch we decided to share a piece of Salted caramel chocolate cake since the reviews were really for the baked goods. Unfortunately the cake was disappointing. The cake itself was dry and had the texture of being a day old. The icing was very sweet and lacked a rich chocolate flavour. The caramel sauce drizzled over the top and through the middle layers of the cake was a very good and it left you wishing there was more to moisten the cake. Our server was cordial and apologized for the long wait we had between being seated and him returning to take our order. The funky, cheerful decor is always a treat to walk into and the people watching is usually fun as well. I have had a great time with groups or just reading a magazine and taking a refreshment break by myself. If I had Baked Expectations in my city, I would visit regularly! I have been here a few times now and I've never been disappointed with the desserts. It's nice that it's also open late for after dinner or a late night treat. My go to is always the Banana Cake, which is always moist and has an awesome butt cream icing. Reducing stars once again- went here for a slice of cake and a coffee and had less than exceptional service. My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary so we went here for a little dessert. We waited 5 min at the door before I finally asked if we could just sit anywhere, which we could. No big deal. Sat down and was "greeted" by our server who clearly was at the end of a long day. Location really does seem to be what keeps this place going. The desserts are pretty solid, but not all that creative or inspired. Big, though. The carrot cake I ordered ended up being about half the size of a typical serving, which turned out to be more than enough for me. It was one of the better carrot cakes I've had, and the server offered to reduce the charge due to the size. So that was nice. But there was little else available that appealed to me, so I might have just gotten lucky with my choice. The quality of the food itself might not be consistent with my choice, if you look at he other reviews here. Despite the carrot cake, this really seems like the type of place to go if you want quantity. There are a lot of choices, which is usually a major point of awesome for me, but there were surprisingly few options for fresh, fruity things. It seemed like more of a four-kinds-of-chocolate-cake kind of place. Fruity stuff was either paired with the richest-looking cheesecake I've ever seen, or buried under really unnecessary amounts of whipped cream or other rich sauces. I was hoping for at least one straight-up tart, but this place is all about the most decadent indulgences... whether you like it or not. I kind of resent that I *have* to listen to my arteries clog at full volume to eat here. Does it all have to be turned up to 11? Also speaking of things forced upon you, the music was really obnoxious and overbearing. I guess that's supposed to make it seem hip, but it didn't really jive with the overall ambiance. Maybe the XM Radio Mega Diva Hits station isn't their usual...? All in all, the taste of the food seems like the high point, and everything goes mostly downhill from there. If you live in Winnipeg and haven't been here - you must be living under a huge rock. This place is a staple and will be around for a long time. Most people tend to head here for their amazing (and I mean amazing) selection of desserts. They are made fresh daily and if you can, come with as many people as possible. I say this because then each person can order something different and you can all share! I'm a genius and you're welcome. Unlike a lot of hot spots in Osborne - Baked Expectations is actually quite clean and looks updated and trendy. There are a lot of chairs and tables, but they are really close together so if you are heading here on a date try to get a corner side booth. The other food they make here is also really good. I would highly recommend coming in for breakfast or lunch. The servers are great and really fast. This is just one more reason people keep coming back! read more
