I am grateful for the empowering experience I had giving birth with these midwives, and am glad they have found a new home. I just went in for my well woman check and was treated like a dear friend, and a human that mattered. It was nice to see everyone again, and receive care from provider whom takes my concerns seriously. The office is in transition as they adjust. The midwives are working with UT hospital on developing a women's pavilion or wing, complete with a natural birth center. For now, they have birth balls, showers, bars, adjustable beds, and nitrous oxide available to mothers in labor. The hospital will be installing labor tubs sometime soon. As the practice grows they plan to hire lactation consultants and educators. I am excited that UT will be teaching future OB/GYNs how to work with midwives and best support women wishing for natural labor. I look forward to watching the University Midwives flourish!

First of all, they noticed that I barely passed my glucose test and had me take the 3 hour test, which I failed. I'm so thankful to have been closely monitored in the last few weeks of pregnancy. Secondly, the delivery process was a dream. I was able to speak to the midwife on call to decide when I should come in when I started having contractions. They got me back very promptly and honored my birth plan. They explained every step of the process for me and always asked permission before doing anything. When baby girl was stuck, they worked with me for almost three hours, trying different positions to avoid using the vacuum. I cannot recommend this team highly enough!

She and the team of wonderful nurses at Fort Sanders got me through a difficult labor that required over 5 hours of pushing that ended with no instruments used and minimal, non-external tears. I felt Dr. Martin managed my and my baby's care so well the whole time. I also really appreciate that she practices alone and personally delivers every baby in her practice. That's pretty much impossible to find these days. I switched to her at 20 weeks in part because I hadn't actually gotten to see my OB yet by 20 weeks at my last practice, just nurse practitioners. Today I was scheduled for a bladder procedure at 9 am and got checked in right at 9. I waited in the lobby for half an hour before checking with the receptionists to see where I was in line for being brought back since two people who had gotten there after me had been called. She told me the staff member doing my procedure wasn't there yet and then after another 20 minutes of waiting I checked again and the receptionist got pissy saying that the nurse was stuck in traffic, but I'd like to know where she was coming from because there's no way she spent more than an hour in traffic and the practice opens at 8:30 so why was she still not there by 9:50? I ended up leaving before I was seen and cancelling my further appointments because I had other obligations to fill that were being impacted by waiting 45+ minutes for my practitioner to actually arrive.

Despite this, I waited three days for a callback regarding scheduling, contacting them through the AI assistant, the patient portal, and finally in person. When I went into the office, I stood at the front desk while staff finished a personal conversation with a colleague before acknowledging me. When I said I needed to speak with someone, I was told flatly, "you can sign in," then met with a blank stare and "let me deal with these other patients." I was eventually told the provider was out and would call me back that day. No call came. I had to follow up again, sending an email and leaving another message through the AI assistant, before I finally received a callback. When I did, I was met with a dismissive, rude tone and told to "wait, they have other patients." When I pushed back and explained how long I had already waited, the staff member became frustrated and told me that if I couldn't wait, they "can't meet my expectations" and I should find another provider. Racial disparities in pain management for Black women are well documented, with research consistently showing Black patients' pain is taken less seriously and treated with less urgency than White patients'. My experience here, being made to wait, repeatedly dismissed, and met with no urgency despite ongoing pain, reflected that same pattern. This behavior is typical of medical offices that lack diversity and cultural competency. Being told to find another provider rather than being helped made one thing clear: my health and wellbeing as a Black woman were not a priority here. If you're considering this practice, especially for anything urgent, know that your care may come second to their convenience.

After my girlfriend explained the situation Dr. Schwartz responded with "Good for You call back on Monday". She totally disredarded the fact she has had pains and fever for a week. My practitioner, Valerie, is compassionate, thorough, and has really listened to and addressed all my questions/concerns. Valerie spent an ample amount of time with me, and armed me with a great treatment plan which included several prescription and non-pharmacological options to combat my intense symptoms of nausea/vomiting. I'm feeling MUCH BETTER now! She's also been very flexible in meeting my needs in regards to ordering my prenatal screening lab work. The ultrasound techs, Emily and Sheila, are both very knowledgeable and personable, and Katie at the front desk is just the sweetest! I saw Dr. Saunders who was wonderful (everyone at this office was very nice). One of the most stressful things about moving is finding all new doctors (at least for me). So, I'm happy to have found a great one right away!
