My God daughter's participation in the choir has allowed me to see the school from a unique perspective, and I am excited to share my thoughts. Every year I'm excited to see what themed productions they will do because they never let me down. The productions are always so well done, with great attention to detail and a clear passion for the arts. You can definitely see all the hard work that is being put into it, and it's wonderful to see the students' talents being showcased. This junior high is ranked one of the top in the SW part of town and the parent club is very active. While you only attend two years it is a great transition before starting high school. He waits until too much time has passed to let me know if my daughter missed work (I know this is on my daughter but the taking too long is what irritates me) he always seems to cop an attitude when I am explaining things to him, and doesn't want to be bothered. I also don't like that he uses caps lock to make a point to my daughter in emails. They recently installed new solar panels and upgraded the classrooms. The staff in the office was always helpful and cheerful when I called in with any questions or to clear absences. The school participates in many voluntary extracurricular activities and competitions like History Day and Robotics; both of these programs have a possibility of moving on to statewide or nationwide competitions! The teachers involved in the extracurriculars are very encouraging and will go above and beyond to make sure the students have the tools they need to succeed in their chosen programs. The teachers at FJH made my daughters time here enjoyable. Special recognition to Norian, Kolb, Escobar, and Chafin for being especially helpful and encouraging. I think Fruitvale is a great school and really care about the kids! I've had more ups than downs at this school, but my son excelled attending here and that's why I rated this school 5 stars. A few things that I thought was the downside of this school is that there's not too many students who get involved with the academic programs versus the athletic programs. I think sports are important; however, I'm shocked that there wasn't more kids volunteering to get involved in Math Field, Battle of the Books and other academic activities. My son only had a bad experience with one teacher his whole time attending here and part of the problem was that he was unorganized, but when we reached out to Ms. Zaragoza (GATE language arts) she had a bad attitude. Rather than coming up with a plan, she was argumentative and we had to involve the principal. The situation was only resolved because the principal stepped in. If we did not reach out to someone above her she would have continued to act unprofessional. I believe that if you become a teacher then you should do it because you love kids, because if you don't then you'll be acting like Ms. Zaragoza and that's a shame. All in all, I think Tevis Jr High is a great school. They have a really nice staff. My son absolutely loved so many of his teachers. This school praises the kids for doing great by rewarding them and they do a lot of school spirit activities.
