In July, I finally forced myself to attend a meeting and I am so glad I did! I've been attending Surf City Speak-n-Lead Toastmasters for about 6 weeks now and I've already learned quite a bit. This group's friendly, warm, and safe environment has helped me begin to build confidence in myself and my words without judgment, ridicule or criticism. The critiques are encouraging and is helping me develop into a stronger speaker. As a writer, words come easily, but voicing them out loud always has been an issue. I struggle especially with impromptu speaking and this group helps in not only prepared speeches but also improv speaking skills. The members go out of their way to make you feel genuinely welcome as well as help you with any questions and advice. Meetings are very well organized and the food is surprisingly good (I'm not typically a fan of restaurants like IHOP). I actually look forward to Wednesday nights every week and am excited to continue to learn and grow my skills with the help of this club.

He learned so much from Modernbrain's dedicated and knowledgeable coaches. He also built a lasting friendship with his peers in Modernbrain who share the same passion with him. Our experience with ModernBrain is nothing but great. I would highly recommend it to anyone who might start exploring interst or would like to sharpen skills in specific speech/debate category. BTW, their tuition and tournament fee is very reasonable and transparent, not like some other instituitions in the bay area.

I was watching my 7 year old daughter do her ModernBrain speech and debate class for the 1st time…read moreand the coach asked her to argue the pro of reading versus watching a film. I immediately thought this was going to be hard for her because she definitely loves her movies. Instead what I found was a thoughtful argument for something that I knew would be hard for her. For example, she cited that through reading you can become a better writer, and have better comprehension because you see the same words and gain familiarity. In addition to better reasoning, she was also able to structure her argument better than I expected. She started her argument with a hook which is a question to draw the listener into her speech then she stated a couple of her main points before she began to get into the meat of her argument. I found the whole thing adorable but I'm sure it will also serve her well in all future academic endeavors. I know it'll be useful even for meetings in the business world if 7 year olds are allowed!

As soon as my son first participated in his school's debate program, he finally found his life's…read morepassion. Unfortunately, when he switched to a school without a debate program, he no longer had access to it. New England Academy came to the rescue. My son found it incredibly instructional and supportive. Not only did he improve his speech and debate skills, but he was able to take on leadership opportunities. His critical thinking skills have also improved and have been inherently applied to his school work. Mr. Hughes and Mr. Hobbs are more than teachers. Their individualized instruction and ability to connect with children makes the program resemble a family activity rather than simply an academic program. They have created a safe environment where making mistakes is constructive and team work is emphasized. My high school son is now an OCDL middle school assistant coach, judge, trusted mentor and friend - which are additional life skills he picked up from Mr. Hughes and Mr. Hobbs.

I hate to leave this review because the therapist that evaluated my children was wonderful…read more However, the office communication was very, very poor. My son had evaluation for speech therapy in which when I started services with let's talk they told me that they would have morning available appointments after we did the evaluation we would be able to get started. Nothing was mentioned about months and months long waiting list. After my son had his evaluation no follow up was done at all with me. I had to call back multiple times myself and inquire about what was going on in which I was told his report was being completed and after that they would call me no call ever came. I had to keep calling them back five weeks after his evaluation they finally told me that he is on a waiting list for 3 to 6 months and I don't even think they would've ever told me that if I didn't call myself. Again I have no issues with the office. I really enjoyed the therapist and I wish that my son could start services there but 3 to 6 months is just a really long time when looking for early intervention.
