Unacceptable and disgusting conduct from La Jolla Country Club members…read more While walking in the La Jolla area to find a friend's house located near the course, I mistakenly thought there was a path or exit through the property. I became lost, and instead of being offered any assistance, I was confronted by two older men who immediately addressed me with the words, "Hey little lady, what are you doing here?" I explained I was lost and trying to reach my destination. Rather than showing any courtesy, they dismissed me, informed me I was on private property, and then proceeded to report me. A staff member later approached in a golf cart and confirmed those same men had called me in as "a lady wandering around the golf course." This behavior was unnecessarily condescending and deeply disrespectful. At no point was I disruptive or a danger -- I was simply lost and seeking directions. To be treated as a nuisance and spoken to in such a dismissive way reflects very poorly on both the membership and the standards of this club. An establishment that prides itself on prestige and hospitality should be able to uphold basic respect and decency. I would expect acknowledgment of this incident and an apology for the way I was handled.

You missed it! Jazz Artist Rose Mallet Featured This Evening…read more One of the best-kept secrets in any community is its community center. While many people think of exercise classes or meetings, these centers often host incredible cultural events at surprisingly affordable prices. That is exactly what I found at the La Jolla Community Center's summer concert series featuring jazz vocalist Rose Mallet. The evening was elegant without being pretentious. The concert lasted about 75 minutes and attracted a mature audience, though I couldn't help but think younger adults are missing out by not exploring the non-traditional venues. Tickets were very reasonably priced compared to many jazz performances around Southern California, making this an exceptional value.$30.00. The center also showcases artwork from local artists throughout the building, with many pieces available for purchase. A simple snack bar offers reasonably priced refreshments, with most items costing under $5. The venue is comfortable and accommodating, with plentiful restrooms, indoor seating on folding chairs, and spacious outdoor seating that includes large communal tables and smaller café-style tables. Seating is open, so arriving early is worthwhile. I arrived around 7:30 p.m. and had no trouble finding free street parking, though valet parking is also available. Most attendees dressed casually. As for me, I took the opportunity to dress like my fashionista self and the occasion is always worth it If you're looking for an inexpensive evening of live music, art, and community, don't overlook your local community center. Hidden gems like this are exactly why I enjoy exploring them. I'll definitely be back for another performance this summer. TIP: Sane day purchase is $5.00 more per ticket after 12 pm

The fact that I never noticed this place kinda freaked me out really. Fast forward nearly 5 years.... I needed a space to host a Animal House Style Toga Party to celebrate my birthday. I didn't want to have the party at my house because neighbors, loud music and free flowing booze don't mix well together. While walking back home after having coffee with my husband and lamenting the cost of renting a space for my party, we passed the Masonic Lodge Hall and he said, 'why don't you have the party here'. HUH? Where? Here??? What IS this place? The Lodge looks kinda scary from the outside. Actually it looks sort of scary inside too, but it fit with the Toga theme of my party perfectly. It's just very dated inside with light blue paint, white columns on the walls and a hokey painted mural. Sold! The men at the Lodge were so kind to us, they gave us the hall early on the day of the party so we could decorate which really helped liven the place up a bit. All of my friends thought we were so clever to have found the Masonic Lodge and rented it for the party...most of them have lived in LJ for many many years and still never even knew it was there. The whole evening was a smashing success and the Hall rental only cost about $165 including use of the kitchen, tables & chairs. You can't be that with a Fez!

Reservations are required so make sure you pick a time and day that works for you. Starting in June, admission prices will be $10 or $7 for students and military veterans. Parking is free if you can find a spot at the institute. Check in with front and get your access band, and then you are on your merry way to explore and take photos. It is an institute and there are a ton of researchers working - do not disturb the peace as I did. Security be watching folks like a hawk so be mindful and respectful of the rules. I got lost in the architecture and went in the building (curious yet unintentionally) - my bad. And then reescorted back to ground zero. However, at times I felt like I was encapsulated in a scary movie. Quiet, weird building architecture, no people around except a bird here and there. Then It felt so peaceful and you ask yourself "where the heck am I?!" Pictures don't do justice but videos do.

If you are curious at all about Toastmasters, or you know that you want or need help with public speaking, or that you need help overcoming the fear of public speaking, then do yourself a favor and try it out at least once. What do you have to lose by trying it for 1 hour? Absolutely nothing and you will be doing yourself a favor, and at the very least you will meet some wonderful new people. Meetings are held Thursdays at noon in the new Vistage office in the UTC mall area across from the mall on Eastgate. There is plenty of parking in front of Vistage. Just make sure to sign in at the front desk and find out which meeting room is the current room for that meeting because it is not always in the same room. I was drawn in by an invite from Brian to attend the pizza party to learn more about Toastmasters and it was much more than good pizza. I have since attended only 4 or 5 meetings, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It is a very non-threatening environment and you can choose to jump right in and participate 100% or you can sit back and observe and not speak at all. Whatever your personal comfort level is. The first time I just watched. There are a wide range of people in the group from all backgrounds, educations, jobs, and speaking expertise levels. Everyone is invited to join and you will feel welcomed and at ease right away. Brian, Jaimee, Brandon, Dawn and all the others do a fantastic job and will help you every step of the way. The meetings are run very precisely like a fine tuned machine. After the meeting sign in period, there is a brief introduction, the meeting agenda is discussed, and responsibilities are handed out. There are a range of responsibilities like a person who keeps track of the time so people don't go over their allotted time limit, there is an "um" counter, etc. There is a meeting agenda and there are usually people who are scheduled to give a timed planned speech but time permitting there are other little fun speaking exercise games. Sometimes there are guest speakers from other clubs, etc. I want to reiterate that you can just sit and observe the meeting until you are comfortable with immersing yourself fully in the Toastmasters experience. You don't have to talk if you don't want to. It may be enough for you at first to just observe, and there are no judgments or expectations, but if you do choose to participate it will be a great learning experience. If you do work up to being 1 of the planned speech givers, you will quickly get dynamic and meaningful feedback in a helpful way which should help you hone your public speaking skills.

After I give a speech I know I'm going to be told what I did well and how I can grow and I greatly appreciated the high quality of feedback. Hearing that immediate feedback helps me grow and better prepare for my next speech. I particularly appreciate the diversity of styles and experiences people bring. I find myself adopting new techniques that I don't think I would have learned had I not been a member of UTC Toastmasters. It's not simply getting better at speaking, it's learning a particular set of skills: vocal variety, pausing, projecting and really connecting with your audience. That's the type of experience you can have at a great club like UTC Toastmasters.
