Remarkable views, friendly staff, hearty breakfast. Great hiking nearby. Took the ferry from Flam and the bus to Sogndal.

This hotel feels like an inn from the days gone by. The staff is friendly and quite helpful with any need you might have. There are comfortable sitting areas in the lobby as well as a place to play cards. Breakfast is plentiful and very tasty, the rooms are a step back in time. Don't assume that you will be getting a modern room with all the latest gadgets. It's a basic room that reflects the fact that this is an isolated location in the middle of the fijords. You will be comfortable and well cared for. Hotel or Inn what ever you might call it, this is a great place to stay!
Three neat young people have purchased this hotel past year. It is a real diamond in the rough; clean, low key, down the road from the square. Very reasonable rate.:. We will be back. read more
The best part of this hotel was the view from our room! Stunning! Pay the extra money for a sea view. Also the higher floors would be best if the weather is warm and people will be hanging outside at the bar below. It could be loud. It was relatively quiet on our visit since it was cool and rainy. The view is a 5 but the hotel itself is a 3. The rooms are spartan - not even a tea kettle. Very basic. The place was clean and the staff super helpful, fun and friendly. They do have free croissants and coffee but no breakfast otherwise. They have a game room. We did take advantage of their sauna which was reasonably priced. It was alot of fun. Not many lodging choices in town so this basic hotel is pricey... Right, that's true for everything in Norway! read more
Balestrand, Norway...population 2000 approximately...small but delight for a couple nights. Price: 1200kr/$155 night. As good as it gets in Balestrand with only about 4 hotel choices. Location: Awesome! Ok, its a short walk into "town", but its easy.If you came in by boat, the owners will pick up you and your luggage up at the boat dock. Cleanliness: Awesome! I think this is cleanest hotel I've ever stayed at. EVER! Staff: Wonderful! The Mom and daughters team. Not sure if Dad did much helping out. But it was the most personable hotel experience I've ever had. Room: Small for American standards, but normal for Europe. Cleanest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Quiet. Nice bed. No TV, but that was fine by us. I wish I had paid the extra $50 for a fjord view room. Breakfast: Good enough. Hard and soft boiled eggs. Various breads, jams, cheeses, juices, cereals, yogurts. No meats though. Free coffee and tea available all day, which is greatly appreciated in a country where a coffee or tea runs $3-5 a cup! Nice common living areas on the main floor with lovely fjord views. Board games and a small library available. No bar, but you can buy draft beer or glass of wine for 50kr or a wine bottle for 250kr. I would absolutely stay here again! (Note: At time of this review, the US dollar was up 50% against the Norway kroner...$1 = 7.5kr vs $1 = 5kr just a couple years ago) read more

Great value. Cost about $175 a night. Staff was friendly spoke good English. Breakfast was free and good. Cleaned room while we were away. Great views. Within short walk to all the restaurants and next door to Olaf's church. read more
A quiet, quaint, humble inn on the water uncluttered by any of the phones, TVs, room service menus, safes, marketing appeals and other miscellany that tend to litter yield-optimized hotel rooms. With a staff helpful in booking travel, transporting bags to the ferry, washing laundry, cooking breakfast, making reservations and planning expeditions, this is a good hotel (more like a friendly dormitory) for basing your fjord trip. Speaking of which: Be sure to go for a fjord-side view! As of today, I can assure you that the Scrabble set is complete, hence the stapling of the spare letter bag :) read more

Greeted flatly in the rain by male driver who took our bags, offered us umbrellas, and gave all the guests their marching orders. We had no idea this was an owner, nor do we remember an introduction. Clean, comfortable hotel with scenic views and excellent breakfast. Unfortunately, when asking a question, the response was something like: "Oh, another guest who can't read". Found his reply insulting, rude, and offensive. It didn't matter what question was asked. A sincere desire to accommodate was missing. When confronted with our concern, we were offered the most insincere, patronizing apology saying he had no idea. Later, the password was posted on the elevator wall. We vote with our wallets, yes? Stayed one night and relocated to Midtnes Hotel, where we were treated with the hospitality and courtesy travelers should expect. Clean room, new bathroom, balcony, gorgeous scenic view, fantastic breakfast(even salmon and shrimp!), pool table, darts, several indoor and outdoor sitting areas for a bit lower rate. Time for Balestrand Hotel male owner to take a refresher course in hospitality. read more
