This place is WAY too expensive and has arbitrary rules that make it impossible to enjoy. I've never seen a golf course that doesn't allow carts in the parking lot so you can load your clubs. They don't allow outside beverages, you have to buy their drinks that are unbelievably overpriced. They force single and double players to play with other twosomes.. There are silly little rules for everything. I can't stand that. When you pay over $100 for one person to play, the least they can do is leave you alone and allow you to play your game. This is Birmingham, there are great affordable courses everywhere available--courses who'll leave you alone and stay out of your head and allow you to play without stupid arbitrary rules.. but this ain't one of 'em. Ballantrae is all around great course, top two in Birmingham public courses IMO. Also being a member pays for itself if you play regularly. They really do a fine job of taking care of the course. Today a team member named Aspen went out of her way and absolutely made my day. I will definitely be a member here for a long time. read more

Ballantrae is owned and operated by the city of Pelham, but this is not your typical municipal golf experience. This is a modern, semi-private club that is nicer than many private clubs. The clubhouse is new and clean, and literally looks like a castle. The staff and service is outstanding. The course winds through a housing development that has some gorgeous homes. The fairways are wide and forgiving. Holes #2, #15 and #18 are my nemesis. Hole #2 is a par 5 that has a tiered green with lots of slopes. #15 is a par 3 that has a pond that is a ball magnet. And, #18 is a long uphill hole where bogey is a good score. Ballantrae is hard to access. From interstate I-65, you wind through residential neighborhoods with multiple stop signs. But, it is definitely worth the trip. read more

Ballantrae is a well hidden gem! My family and I decided to go and dine for breakfast. Subpar buffet breakfast, but the cook to order items were delicious.The staff were amazing! Very very friendly. Jim, the cook cane to make sure my egg was made perfectly. Which by the way, it was!! The price for the buffet was affordable. This was a pleasant experience. read more

Buffet breakfast is open to the public and none members. It's a really nice place. The breakfast isn't a huge spread but they will cook eggs to order if you don't want the scrambled. They will also make omelettes to order and waffles to order. I'm sure there's more but I didn't see a full list. The staff was very friendly and very accommodating. The other guest was friendly as well. It's a quality amount of food for $7.50. They also had fresh cut fruit. The honeydew and cantaloupe was very sweet and it ran out and they cut more fruit for my daughters and brought it out. I thought that was great customer service. Play there on a Monday and one group of 4 held the golf course up all day and the marshals did nothing. We were backed up 5 deep waiting on them. I have played the course 20 plus times and have never been in a situation like that. The marshals need to setup and do there job!! read more

Great Course Friendly Staff everything was great but I've got to say, they could possibly win the award for stupidest thing of Covid!!!! They have built a divider between golfers in the golf carts it's definitely as to be top 10 stupidest things I've ever seen LOL!!! Oh well I'm sure somebody was proud they were saving the world! Excellent course Jerry the starter was great, I was in town on business he made sure I was paired up with a good group. We had a great time. Course is ftough but fair. Great greens excellent shape. The course itself was in good shape and very playable. The areas of concern are that on weekends they start on both sides in an attempt to get more people started. That's all it did, just too many and resulted in very slow play and a long round. They also don't allow walking. Disappoints me. Isn't golf a walking sport. You would think a city owned facility would promote exercise but has fallen into the money trap. read more
