There are few enough places on earth that can match Mayo for its stark, barren and untampered-with beauty. There are areas in the county which will simple take your breath away, Ballycroy is one of them. It's hard to explain why this is so and any photo I post with this review will not do it any justice... but it gives you an idea.
The visitor centre is OK - not wildly exciting but it gives you a focus and has the exceptionally important café and toilets - both of which were very welcome when we got to them! It also has an exhibition space where you learn about things like Bog Butter - utterly insane and fascinating. The bottom line is we have lumps of 3,000 year old butter hidden in the bogs, put there by people who used the bog as a sort of fridge and forgot about it. read more
