I was on one of the first courses back in the early 90's as a school boy and the centre has gone from strength to strength. The original building was actually a whaling centre in the 1900's and then a toy factory but is now a state of the art adventure/water sports facility. They have Easter and summer courses for secondary school kids and is very popular with them seeing from all the buses arriving at the start of the courses. They also rent equipment and run courses for adults if learning Irish is not your thing but "Making Irish Fun" is their motto. Very friendly staff and an excellent location. P.S. Excellent website!

If you've visited Ceide Fields nearby, your tour guide might have pointed out Downpatrick Head, a sea stack off the coast. If your tour guide was like mine, they mention it in passing, making you think that it's some place you "can't get to from here" or is on a private estate where people aren't welcome. Wrong. Drive to Ballycastle, turn north-ish on Dominick Street, and dead reckon (or follow Google Maps) to the end of the road, which leaves you in a gravel parking lot. An easy hike up a trail and through the hassock filled fields will bring to the sea cliffs which are absolutely, positively stunning. The towering sea stack is even taller than the point where the land runs out, and the visible rock layers are really something. The cliffs are being undermined by the sea, to the point where chunks of the land are collapsing in to form enormous blowholes, which, unlike the sheer sea cliffs, are completely fenced off for safety. As I think a website I found later points out, if it's windy, stay back. And probably lock the kids in the car, or you'll be going home one fewer. There's nothing to stop you from falling in to the ocean, probably a bad thing since the closer you get to the edge, the better your view of the next finger of land jutting out in to the sea is. Just a little further and you'd have a better view of the layered cliffs or the wave smashing in to the sea caves that underpin the very cliff you're standing on... There were even people fishing off the high cliffs the day we were there - absolutely bonkers, since even a tug on your line might set you off balance, and these guys were insanely close to the edge. You simply cannot miss this spot. It's undersold, at least by my guide, at Ceide Fields, and since it's super easy to get to, and absolutely awe inspiring, I can't imagine having missed this. We just stood at the cliffs edge and marveled at the sight. Good thing I left my DSLR in Chicago...I'm the guy taking vacation photos with a cell phone that I'm usually making fun of.

We spotted the sea stack at Downpatrick Head from Céide Fields and we just had to go see it…read more Following the sign posts, we arrived at a wind swept seafront. The waves were crazy in the bay. Mesmerising when you watched them come in for a few minutes. Further on and a little bit of a trek through some farmland is the head and sea stack. It's so worth the journey. Especially when the sea and weather was as wild as it was on this occasion. The noise was deafening. The wind a tad frighting. The foam was flying. The sea stack was awesome. Rain wind or shine, go there. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The course was designed by the country's most famous course architect, Eddie Hackett. It was his last course and many say it is his greatest challenge. The golf course is characterized by the monumental sand dunes that cover its landscape. They were used to create elevated tees, providing golfers with a glimpse of the impending challenges. The layout offers a variety of interesting holes that each have a unique character. The range is there but it's shag your own ball Caddies are available and the curse offers full services The Hackett course is their main course but they also have a newer nine hole course that should be fun when it fully matures Pro shop and club house is a little sparse and needs a touchup but this course definitely has an "old world" feel despite the fact that it opened in 2005.

We came here hoping to do some good hiking, but didn't quite find it…read more The major hikes were too wet for us to do. There were some hikes along the greenway, but we decided to bike the greenway instead. We ended up just doing the short walk at the visitor's center and the coastal walk. Both were very scenic and we enjoyed the views. Both were easy and about 1-2 km long. I think it's worth stopping here, we just only spent a couple hours exploring.

The guys are fast, not overly expensive,and the bikes are always in good condition. well worth a shot if you are in the mood for a quick cycle!... BUT make sure to book in advance, they are busy and you are unlikely to get a bike on short notice!

Absolutely amazing place - I have been visiting Achill for years and didn't realise it existed -…read morethe road to get there is a bit hairy (think sheer cliffs and very small roads), it is worth the trip at any cost (except actually falling over the a fore mentioned cliffs... it's probably not worth that). There is a small van there, pretty much all the time - it sells sweets, hot-dogs and coffee, to find such a facility in the wild is unexpected and brilliant and almost guarantees you will buy a hot dog, even if you don't want one, just because it is there!
