This is a pretty cool restaurant and venue, with several rooms and regularly scheduled events happening on site. What a vibe, with colored lighting, quirky furniture and decor, including piano lips, random artwork, posters, props, as well as chandeliers and mini disco balls hanging from the ceiling. A less than ideal layout for live music events, a narrow room with the stage on one end, and seats randomly stuck in the aisle making it hard for people to move around in there. The band, Dirty Cello, put on a lively show on a Monday night, with plenty of talent on the violin, cello, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. An awesome song list including Paint It Black, Sweet Child O' Mine, Dream On, I Wanna Be Sedated, as well as several Irish tunes to celebrate St. Paddy's holiday. Sound and lighting were decent. They serve southern cuisine on the menu. We opted to try the loaded cornbread with pimento cheese bacon jam, and this was a fat slice, served warm and super delicious. The cheese part of the dish was a sort of mousse consistency, which was different. The actual cornbread had lots of flavor and spice and wasn't too dense. We had a beer and cocktail to go with that, which were standard quality. Service was sufficient, nothing noteworthy. Be aware, there were several signs on site saying "cash only". Also, parking wasn't too bad, we found a spot on the street a block away. read more

The day the music died. Tony and Suzie had a good run ... they brought back the music venue with great ambience and food. They left the bar intact with its original charm and brought their own eclectic taste decorating it. They participated in community events such as Point Richmond's summer concert series, and other town celebrations. They were pretty much the only business that stayed open until midnight for your listening pleasure. The Baltic was the first tavern in Point Richmond, established in 1904. It has a colorful past - operating as a speakeasy, saloon, bordello, with the firehouse, City Hall, police station and the jail, all just next door. Fast forward to the 70s and 80s where it continued as an Italian restaurant and bar. Over time it morphed into a German pub, an English pub, all the while retaining the music venue. Local talents (Maria Muldaur comes to mind) performed here. The chef from the original Hotel Mac took over with a partner and retained the original name as a restaurant and bar. Its next iteration was Brezo, more a lunch and brunch spot with less emphasis on the bar (I don't recall if they had a full liquor license or not). Next was Baltic Spice, an Indian restaurant with delicious food. After their short run, Tony and Suzie opened Baltic Kiss and brought it back to a music venue and restaurant with Southern food offerings. Enough history. Black Star BBQ was quite a remote spot to grab a weekend bite at the end of a winding, potholed road in Point San Pablo. The owners decided to close it a while back (Sailing Goat took it over) and opened this funky spot in nearby Point Richmond. Smart move as it's a lot easier to get here, and inevitably they added a bar. I paid a first visit not long after they moved. The bartender was friendly, but she wasn't able to make an espresso martini or a tequila sunrise for whatever reason. I was finally able to land on the $14 Makers Mark & Ginger, a generous pour for a third choice (photo: https://yelp.to/EsCmGN6S1f). I came back recently for the BBQ side of their menu for takeout. I didn't order from their truck in the parking lot. I actually used (*horrors*) Grubhub. I decided to order the $30 Two Meats/Two Sides plate going with the smoked brisket and pulled pork (photo: https://yelp.to/Sehw9CsNzr). Loved the brisket with globules of melted fat but was less fond of the pulled pork which was a bit on the dry side. The all-American sides were well executed. The mac n' cheese and zesty corn were the kind of homestyle carby complements that purely satisfied. I drove an hour to go have dinner and listen to the band. Before I could be seated to eat, I had to pay a $10 cover which was OK, but I would've expected it to be included in the dinner bill. I was seated at the "back bar" which was between the band seating area and the outside seating in the very back of the room. There was only one stool at the bar, but I was by myself, so that was fine. The front of the menu was for this restaurant, in the back of the menu was from the old Black Star Pirate restaurant that used to be Located a couple of miles north on the water. I've been to Blackstar several times and though it was expensive, the food was really good. I didn't order barbecue because I was looking forward to the southern food if it was the same quality as the black pirate had been, but a different menu. When I ordered my dinner, I also asked for a cup of coffee because there was a coffee maker behind the bar that was half full of coffee. The white person told me that the coffee maker was broken, so the coffee was cold. She apparently turned the coffee maker on after she served me the cold coffee. I asked if she could microwave the coffee to warm it and she said they don't have a microwave. I asked if they could put the coffee pot on the stove and apparently the cook refused to do that. I asked if she could put the coffee in one of the fry pans I could see sitting on the stove and she said no, and I had been falling asleep on the drive down so I drank the coffee at room temperature. The owner passed by where I was sitting several times, but didn't acknowledge me because I wanted to ask him what the deal was on the coffee warming, but to no avail. The doorman came by and I asked him if I could get help and getting a warm cup of coffee so I didn't have to call Uber eats to get a cup of coffee inside the restaurant , he checked the coffee maker and by then the coffee was hot, so he served me a cup. I was pretty disgusted that neither my server nor the Cook would help, but the doorman did! When I was looking at the menu, I mentioned to the server that I might want to order something else After I ordered the gumbo. She told me that I would be able to order a side and we even talked about the price of the side because it wasn't on the menu. When the gumbo came, it was excellent, as good as I've had anywhere. When I finished the gumbo, I asked about ordering something else and the waitress told me that the kitchen was closed! Why the heck did she not tell me that the kitchen was going to be closing at the time when I ordered my gumbo and asked about ordering something when I finished it? Another huge frustration. Then the server came around and told me that she needed to close out so I needed to pay my bill, I put out my credit card and she came back and told me that it was cash only. Luckily, I had enough cash on me to pay the bill so it wasn't a problem, but it was a surprise that an expensive restaurant Wouldn't take a credit card. I asked a couple of people and they said that the restaurant is in financial trouble, having trouble paying the employees, so they probably are having problems accepting credit cards so they're only taking cash. Later, I realize there were signs on the wall in a couple of places, but not where I was seated. The server should've told me at the time that I was ordering that they didn't accept credit cards because the cost of my meal was substantial and if I had not had enough cash, it would've been a real problem! Summary: the band was great, when I went to the bar after my meal, the service from the bartender was great, and the food was excellent! The attitude and the quality of the service by the food server were supremely disappointing, and the fact that the chef would not simply put the coffee pot on the stove, just made me feel like there was no such thing as customer service in that restaurant. On top of that which I couldn't see well in the dark, the bill had a non-cash adjustment of 4% added to the bill even though I had to pay cash because they won't take a credit card. Greedy, rip off, ($31.96 for one bowl of gumbo without the tip) bad customer service in the restaurant. Great band, acceptable, $10 cover charge, good service in the bar. read more

It is new but has already achieved an old world experience. The bartender was nice enough to let me bring in a coffee from Kaleidoscope next door, then I ordered several whiskeys later. They support local music which is why I came to the venue. They switched to the a sports game and we grabbed spectacular BBQ. I frequented their old location, Black Star BBQ and the quality is still excellent. Glad to go there on an afternoon or evening. No other place like it in the Bay Area. read more

Took the wifey out to a last minute dinner and we decided to try this place having heard about it for a while. I liked the ambiance of the place and there was a band playing on the other side. There was a cover charge of $10 to see the band. We opted to sit on the restaurant/bar side. My wife had a cocktail (Pyrate Mule) and I had a beer. The drink was good and was strong. The beer was good also. Wifey ordered Chicken and Waffles. The chicken was hot and crispy and the waffle tasted good as well. Definitely a good pick. I ordered the two meat/two side barbecue plate with the cornbread. For the meat I picked ribs and brisket and for the sides it was Mac and Cheese and cowboy beans. I was disappointed because most of the items came out cold. There was plenty of food on the tray but the lack of heat kind of killed the dish. The food tasted ok and I did finish the Mac and cheese and beans but took home a couple of ribs and most of the brisket. It was good when heated up. I came here with my friends. The restaurant is trying to act as a Louisiana bohemian restaurant with jazz bands played on Sunday nights. I ordered a southern chicken and waffles with Cajun seasoning. I didn't taste nothing, literally nothing, just substance. My friends also replied the same response. We were really disappointed and it was expensive. My order was $25. What's worse was the payment of the bill, which totaled at $113, but if we pay in credit card, we would get charged an additional $5. Not cool. Came in on a Saturday night. My husband and I have been wanting to try this place for a while. It was a little crowded as there was a band playing. We sat on the bar side as we were not interested in paying a $10 each cover to see the band. The music sounded ok though. We were seated pretty quickly. We ordered drinks. My husband had an ipa and I had a pyrate mule. It was good. I ordered chicken and bacon waffles. It came out in a reasonable time. The chicken was definitely fresh cooked and hot. The coating was seasoned but not the chicken itself it was ok. The waffle was ok didn't see any bacon in it though. My husband ordered barbecue he had ribs, brisket, mac and cheese and cowboy beans. He also ordered a side of cornbread. The cornbread was pretty good and hot. Unfortunately it was the only part of his meal that was hot. The ribs, brisket, mac & cheese and beans all were luke warm which was very disappointing as we had been looking forward to trying this barbecue for a while. He ate half but was not happy as it wasn't hot. I tried it. The ribs were ok. The brisket was dry might have been better if it was hot. Mac and cheese was unseasoned. This is pretty much what my bar would look like if I ever opened a bar. The building is more than a century old, with lots of interesting nooks and crannies. The lighting is great. There are two bars and two live music stages. There's a porch so you can enjoy the beautiful East Bay weather. There's a permanent food truck with tasty Southern fare. I wish it was a bit more seasoned. My fiancée ordered the jerk chicken which was spiced to her liking. She didn't necessarily enjoy the spinach. Our waiter was very attentive and nice. Not much seating indoors for dining and no heat lamps for outdoor dining. Fried oysters (appetizer special) were good. The oysters were fresh, plump and perfectly fried in a light batter. The slaw it came with was too tart and the dish could have used some remoulade. The chicken and waffles was ok. The chicken was more like a schnitzel than traditional fried chicken. A bit overcooked and dry. The waffle was fluffy inside but needed to be more crispy on the outside. They should have put the syrup on the side instead of serving it already on the food, which probably caused the waffle to be too soft by the time it arrived on our table. The gumbo was disappointing. Small portion, bland and meat overcooked. No okra (or I couldn't see/taste it). Even after adding salt and hot sauce, it was still mediocre. The venue and atmosphere is unique and has potential. Never got to try the food. Came in, got seated out back, given menus and water. About ten minutes later a party of 6-7 were seated, and soon after a party of three. After another ten minutes, the waitress took the order of the large party, and a while after that she took the order of the smaller three-person party. It had been close to a half hour total that we waited. We felt like Mr. Cellophane (invisible). We were looking forward to a Friday night out, a drink or two, and a good meal. read more

Love the new iternation of this classic old school building. Very nice menu with a nod to the Chef's New Orleans upbringing. Lots of options and small plates. Tasty fish sandwich, will have to try the Gumbo next time. The VIBE in this place is great. Funky, yet warm and inviting. Live music most nights. This is my second time going. I am only giving a three star review because they're local and I want to like this place but too much went wrong. 1. They served my stepson a cbd drink then waiter tried to defend it by saying "well it doesn't have thc" 2. The menu is hit or miss. Some items were good but some were just terrible. 3. The drinks were also bad. I order 3 margaritas. All were different. One salty. One no booze. One decent. 4. Live music was great but a little too loud. I wanted to love this place so much. I was a huge fan of Black Pirate BBQ and a colleague was in Marin, I am in the E Bay, so we decided to meet here for dinner last night , Monday. I checked the website, they were open! I saw a mention of Happy Hour and tried to click to get more details but there were none so I left Alameda and drove to Pt. Richmond. I love the atmosphere, the bartender was good, friendly but not pverbaring, and my colleague's drink was perfect. We decided not to sit at the bar, and asked about seating on the restaurant side, there was a group of men around a table, the only folks in that area and turns out they were finishing. Met the owner, who couldn't be nicer, and was told we could sit anywhere. And we were ready to eat some southern-styled food, as a preamble to my annual three-week stay in New Orleans, home of my heart. The menu came out, very limited and I asked about the things I wanted to order and was told on Mondays they only offer the Happy Hour menu, which I did not want to eat. I asked why that wasn't on the website because we wouldn't have come had we known that. He shrugged, didn't know. We weren't the only folks who had this experience, the table behind us, the only other people eating there (now I know why...) asked the exact same questions we had 30 minutes earlier. My colleague who is gluten-free had only one choice, red beans and rice with chicken and sausage...the guy who was taking care of us didn't know what was gluten-free (he is usually the bartender for that back room he said) but checked with the kitchen. They said they could take any of the sandwiches and make it a salad. I found Not Yo' Momma's Bologne described as delectable bolognese with pork belly and ground pork (a personal favorite of mine) on penne past, even better to soak up all the sauce. I was in even at the very hefty price of $25 (which was shocking a bit because I could go to Via del Corso in Berkeley for some of the best pasta you can ever eat, at that price.) Our orders came out a few minutes later. My colleague's was a big bowl of red beans and rice, some sausage, and chicken. I got a plate of spaghetti with chunks of pork. I thought I got the wrong order so asked our server about it. Back to the kitchen he went. The explanation was she/ the cook I suppose) thought it would take too long to cook the penne so made spaghetti instead... I sat waiting for the actual explanation thinking this was one of the craziest things I've ever heard in a restaurant...you don't want to take the time to cook what is on the enu, so you cook something that works for you without asking your customer. ..OK So there was no ground pork or real sauce on this dish...there were sma;; chucks of pretty fatty pork- no way pork belly - it looked and tasted more like the leftover parts of a pork shoulder which seems likely since that is on the sandwich menu. It was bad...honestly not good, and if there were viable options for dinner at now 730pm in Pt Richmond we would have gone. The red beans and rice were unedible, once the sausage was gone there was no flavor. The beans were dry and no sauce to sauce the rice. Almost the entire bowl went back to the kitchen with no questions about why. I managed to get the strands of boxed spaghetti out of my bowl but the chunks of tomatoes and pork weren't edible either. The bill came out and I was stunned that there was no reduction to the $25 spaghetti which was DEFINITELY NOT anyone's bolognese. At this point I just wanted to get out of there, the place was now filling up with people there for drinks (makes perfect sense to be there for drinks) and a 9pm comedy show but I'd had enough comedy for one night. We paid the $42 bill for food that was correctly priced at $12 for red beans and rice and my meal should have been comped. The spaghetti I got should have been priced at $12. It wasn't what was ordered, or even what was on the menu, but at that point, it was easier to pay and go home and et something good. It would take so little effort to care about the food here...esp with such an incredibly limited Monday menu. There was no care or love that went into the food we ate, it was DOA. As much as I'd hoped to love this place and did stepping through the door, I won't be back. I will remain fondly missing Black Pirate. It might be worth the stop for drinks if you are in the neighborhood. I don't drink alcohol so don't go out of my way to go to bars. There is music nightly, and comedy on Monday night. Clearly, someone cared about making the place look a certain way, and succeeded in that. Someone needs to care about the food in the same way they care about creating a community place to eat and drink, laugh, and hear some good music. This was probably the worst food experience I've had in over a decade, which is why I am writing a review. For folks who are looking for the deliciousness of Black Star Pirate BBQ keep looking this sadly isn't it. read more
