People come to Fougères to see Europe's largest Medieval castle and the lovely public gardens. But there aren't a lot of hotel options.
We stayed at the Hotel Balzac in March 2016 and were very satisfied. Granted, it's an older style hotel, with small basic rooms and dated furnishings. But it is clean and comfortable, with a friendly staff and a central location in the upper town. (Follow the signs for the Tourist Office. The hotel is on the same street.)
About 2 blocks away, at the Place du Général Lariboisière (look for the horse statue), there is a city-owned garage with free parking. The only catch is that it is locked up between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., so you won't have access to your car in the evening. If you're okay with that, this garage is a good place to park overnight. read more
