The Old Stone House is located in the Park Slope neighborhood near the boundary with Gowanus. It sits adjacent to Washington Park. The house itself is a reconstruction of the original structure, which burned & was excavated. It uses some of the original stones and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An important site in the defeat of Washington's troops, it headquartered the British troops in the first major battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Old Stone House was even the earliest headquarters of the Brooklyn Dodgers. I continue to mourn the fact that they were moved from Brooklyn, having followed the team in my childhood with my Daddy. He instilled in me the love of baseball. Today the house is a wonderful museum with displays and exhibits of the Battle of Brooklyn. Most impressive is the large exhibit of miniature soldiers as they were positioned during that 1776 assault. Whether or not you're a Revolutionary War Historian, you'll learn much about the area and its place in history by visiting the Old Stone House.

I have not taken a dance class with this studio per se, but have taken classes here with an instructor who rents the space. The dance studio is small, but well kept with clean bathrooms, a clear entrance way and space to maneuver. The studio has nice wooden floors and large mirrors, always convenient for practicing dance and rehearsing a choreographed piece. I did take off one star because the space is quite small and when the room gets full it's difficult to "let loose" and branch out as a dancer. I found that it can feel cramped with upwards of 12 adults in the room. Nonetheless, this is NYC and space is hard to come by anywhere! All in all, a conveniently located, well maintained studio that is perfect for small dance classes and workshops.

People I could never get to step a toe in a museum now beg me to come with them to see some trendy exhibit they heard about. Marketing has improved immensely. They've expanded their reach beyond geeks and schoolchildren to a wide variety of people, and that's good. It keeps the museum alive. It's just no longer one of my favorite places personally. What I miss the most are the old First Saturdays that no one knew about. I'd look forward to them all month like a child looks forward to Christmas. It felt like Brooklyn's best kept secret. Now you have to preregister to get sardined. I'm not much of a noisy crowd person, so I end up leaving early the rare occasion I attempt to go. I do enjoy the salsa parties. Those are fun. Staff can be rude as all else. I've never personally had an issue, but I've seen some uncalled for behavior towards other patrons, especially if they give touristy vibes. The littlest thing can set someone off. It's completely uncalled for.

It was such a beautiful evening I just have to start from the beginning. I walked up with my friend (who had a piece in the show) and was immediately WOWed when we saw the beautifully lit large windows showcasing tons of happy, supportive, exciting people looking and talking about fiber art. Yes, I've been to galleries before but something felt really good in that space, positive vibes from the get-go. We were greeted by a lovely lady asking for donations. For $5 you got a raffle ticket and free tote bag or scarf. The raffle prizes were all at least $100, well worth a $5-$20 donation, let alone the rest of the evening which I am about unravel to you. Works ranged from gigantic detailed creatures hanging from the ceiling and spilling to the floor, gorgeous intricate embroidered illustrations, very cool sculptural/costume-like joined head piece, large scale portrait quilts, intriguing fabric films.. everything I saw was a FEAST for the eyes, and completely different, yet connected. Cutting edge indeed. I was super impressed and got to meet many of the artists there that night, including Joetta. Although it was crowed (which is SO great for a gallery opening!) the atmosphere was completely positive. The live brass band added a bouncy background to conversation, and later an impromptu dance party/congo. There was lots of delicious savory finger food and darling 'textile arts center' cupcakes. Plenty of complimentary wine and cold craft beers. Bathrooms were spotless, well lit, brightly colored and stocked with essentials. One of the more inspiring NY events I've been to. The current exhibition is up Sept 17 - Oct 11, even without the party it's absolutely worth checking out. The facilities are gorgeous, and class listings are on their website.

It's difficult to find anywhere that has floor looms and instruction as well as studio time without having to get in a car and drive to another state. TAC is perfect for the weaver, like me, who already has a project at the home loom and wants to begin another at the same time. It's not just weaving, either. There is block printing, felted and woven sculpture, tapestry, framed prints, airbrush, fabric collage, printed bags, recycled printing, sewing, embroidery and design. TAC wil keep you crafty busy as well as your little one at the Kids Camp for the artsy child. Teachers are knowledgeable and laid back. Class fee includes separate studio time on two other days, one during the week and one on the weekend- a useful option for those that need to split up their studio work over a period of time.

Puppets certainly fun for toddlers and older, but these puppets and the shows need an update…read more They're so old fashioned in style, which tends to mean they appear on the creepy side. my daughter told us she found them a little scary. Aside from the aesthetic, I found some of the stories wildly outdated in a slightly harmful way. One story that was shown to a group of toddlers had a fight over the ownership of a girl (never explicitly stated but not subtle either). The evil character won the battle and now the girl toy was his against her will. I don't think I have to point out what's wrong with that. The toys were also pretty mean to each other. Hoping all this went over her head but we won't be back to expose her to more stories like this.

Puppetworks make fairy tales come to life through marionette puppetry, offering hour-long performances geared to kids that will charm everyone in the audience. Kids are encouraged to sit on rugs in front of the stage, while adults and other kids can also sit on the sides and back of the event space. Dozens of beautiful, colorful marionettes of all sizes hang from the wall, giving the impression that they are also part of the audience. The performance itself is professionally curated: the story, the voices, the sound effects, the music, the scenery, and the lights. Artistic Director Nicolas Coppola and his crew clearly put a lot of passion in their work, and it shows in the production. I was definitely impressed. Kids loved it, of course, with lots of active participation during the show. Plus, at the end of the show, Mr. Coppola came out of the stage with a marionette for the kids to meet. Since 1980 Puppetworks offer fun entertainment for kids and family in the neighborhood. Tickets are currently $10 for children, and $11 for adult. In the past being unaware, I would try to go to dance but brain issues prevented me from being fully present in it, and finally I gave up when it got worse. As I found out my issues, I began healing and decided to return to dancing as a way to continue that. And now, as my body has started to regained health I can finally enjoy it. I entered and two engineers or project managers? were speaking and I stated " Wow, this is really cool!". They smiled and said "This is Day 3 of the cinema opening". I was in a popcorn and soda mood, picked my snacks up at the Concession Stand and walked to my movie room. I walked down a sleek hall with round leather "pouf" orange ottomans; perfect to sit and wait outside for your movie to start. I love the movie theaters that are small and sleek... oohhh what have we here? Leather seating, leg room, big screen and less crowds!" The popcorn and soda were fresh and delicious. The entire staff were wonderful and courteous. BAM is surrounded by cool restaurants like Olea and Miss Ada, Apple for shopping, and nearby Atlantic Avenue Mall. I haven't been a regular moviegoer as I used to be, COVID unfortunately impacted that habit.
