There's nothing particularly special about the interior- it's a big open space with a bar along the far end and plenty of room to dance. The DJ is up above next to the entrance and there are some tables and chairs alongside the window. A lot of the bars in the NQ tend to have a quirky theme or funky interior but this is your standard bar with hip hop style music. It just lacks personality and reminds me of being back in uni. I came in here for the first time on a Saturday night on Valentine's Day and it was packed with people so you could barely move...everyone drunk and bumping into each other, pretty difficult to get a drink at the bar but good for dancing. Second time was a Saturday night but earlier in the evening about 9pm so could actually get a seat at a table and chill, much more pleasant. Cocktails are good and the bartender was good at making them. I don't like mine too sweet so I had this one with gin and beer in it- can't remember the name but tasted great like an alcoholic lemonade. Crowd is a bit random, the bar isn't exceptional but at least there's space too move about on a weekend!

It was "lick the bowl" delicious. We didn't, but we wanted to... the starters came next. We each received a sampling of about four items with accompanying sauces. Everything was so tasty. The mains course spectacular was the duck red curry! The sauce was exceptional! So very flavorful and savory. The ginger chicken had a hard time standing up in comparison. The veggie dish was also very good with a nice little kick to it. We could not finish all the food between the two of us. Highly highly recommend!

Simply Thai creates really authentic recipes with quite authentic spice levels, considering the UK demographic doesn't always appreciate super spicy food. Coming from Los Angeles, the home of 1.5 million Thai, this place hit the spot. Noodle dishes are all correctly prepared, light and taste, never greasy or oily, and replete with plenty of vegetables. The one caution I would give to people not familiar with Thai. Food is to ask for suggestions if you can't tolerate fairly strong spice levels. Because these are the real recipes. It's an elegant restaurant with a very luxury feeling atmosphere. Be careful on the steps down to the WC as they are very steep and small. This is Buxton so it's basically central lot parking or be really lucky to find a street spot.

Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

Dance to current indie/ britpop/ madchester and that is where 42nd Street is in it's element. You are usually a student or at least still dress like one. And you will appreciate the cheap student entry and cheap drinks. The comparisons to 5th Avenue are endless: personally I prefer 42s. Ok, its not big enough to run around and lose people and end up drinking on your own, say. But it does capture that New York dingy charm more. Either get sweaty and shout out the lyrics to The Smiths, Oasis and The Killers in the middle or join the handful of posers lounging on the one couch by the entrance. They are launching a request driven night on Mondays now 'PMT' which stands for Play My Tune - weird choice for the name but we'll forgive them. Other than that, you have 'Glamourous Indie Rock n Roll' on Fridays and their 'The Best Indie Night ever ...' on Tuesdays. And, be warned the bouncers do NOT take kindly to bare feet. Every Monday, there's weekly student night Dirty Stop Out with rock, pop and metal deejays, every Wednesday there's 70s night Love Train and every Saturday there's Party in The Town playing bad music from the 70s to Take That. All three nights seem to be a hit with students and singles but I've personally no desire to go somewhere there's (A) a surplus amount of Alcopops and (B) big groups of horny, intoxicated stag and hen parties. I must admit I am partial to a basement club setting, I don't know why but it just does it for me. On the surface it really hasn't got that much else going for it. It's dark, dingy got that dirty feel but that's what makes it cool. It doesn't care to be superficially in tune, just stick Manchester's king of radio Clint Boon as the selling point and rev up a following of his Boon army to lure in the crowds, not that it's in your face like that. Located in the vicinity of the likes of The Venue and 42s, South's allure is that it doesn't try hard. South's dwellers are admittedly older than 18 or even 20. It's not there to look particularly cool but simply to deliver the Indie anthems to get the liberal dances and shape throwers out. Who needs to look cool when you yourself can be cool because you're there for the music and the laugh with your mates, that is the new cool. Having said that what's an indie establishment without the odd trendy. Past guest DJ sets include West Londoner band White Lies (amazing). South's definitely worth a try if only to make the comparison between the others. It's "The C word" on a Friday night, drinks offers, fun times. Your indie Friday and Saturday could do with this new transformation, the coined "Boon Weekender."
